Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you want to hear more from Markey, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Oliver said the beer tent had a licence, so they were going to sell the wine in there.

@echt have you tried Spotify? not sure how it is with the free version, but with a subscription it's fine.

Bruisername · 12/08/2025 22:24

Why would the bull agree to that?

Chat GPT suggests that a shop with a license to sell alcohol would need an additional licence to sell alcohol at another location- with a Temporary Event Notice being suitable for a fete - only lasts for a specified number of hours, cheap (£21) and can be obtained at short notice (10 working days). Unclear if 'selling alcohol' is broken down by "alcohol to consume at home' vs 'to drink on site'.

My favourite (gastro) pub doesn't have an off sales licence.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 12/08/2025 22:33

Sorry, what the hell is this Lynda/Akram nonsense about?

It's even more tedious than the village shop stuff.

TottersBlankly · 12/08/2025 22:48

It did seem vey tedious and longwinded filler material.

TottersBlankly · 12/08/2025 22:52

Although … Robert was thoroughly pissed off with his beloved. Not sure if her behaviour is more likely to make him stay away, or come home sooner than planned - with daughter and grandson.

Edited

I thought so too. Unlike Lynda to forget such a thing and then tie herself into such a ridiculous knot about it.

JudyCoolibar · 12/08/2025 23:52

Do Lynda and Robert have any help running the B&B? If Robert has buggered off leaving it all to Lynda, she must be run ragged.

MinnieBaldock · 13/08/2025 05:32

I'm sorry but I can't see the point of new Robert he is so boring. It's not like him to sulk.
I went to a jumble sale last year and it was in a church not a church hall, but a shop in a church seems a bit odd, I'm sure it won't make people go to church just cos you popped in for a loaf and paper. Also on drink licences will they be able to sell wine in there, if not what will Lillian do. Is a Church licenced because of Holy wine or is that a different kettle of five fishes and 2 loafs.
Yes it did fill like a filler episode. Perhaps they are saving up for when Rochelle reappears, so exciting NOT!

They're not selling wine in a church. The church won't have a licence.

MinnieBaldock · 13/08/2025 07:21

Yeah I didn't think they would have a drinks licence in the Church. It was written tongue in cheek.

LillianGish · 13/08/2025 08:42

The filler is just so dull at the moment - and paying contactless means we don't even get any change counting. How long is the work on Chris's flat scheduled to take? I can't believe moving the shop and all its contents from from pillar to post between various locations would ever happen. And all the while missing the opportunity to make a stationery shop joke.

TottersBlankly · 13/08/2025 09:41

😂

Cantsleepdontsleep · 13/08/2025 16:41

Church wouldn’t need a license for holy wine as it isn’t sold. Possibly still contentious though, as any other event could get into trouble if providing alcohol for ‘donations’.

A lot seems to have been made of Lynda’s newly less empathetic attitude - her disgust as James being away, not thanking Akram, being rude and dismissive to Robert…. All out of character. She’d normally be the first to reproach others in all this. The only be I thought held true was when she said she hasn’t given Robert her full attention (think anyone else would say they weren’t really listening).
.

Gonners · 13/08/2025 17:06

I'm not convinced that Lynda ever gives anyone her full attention. She normally seems to be bursting to butt in and add her two penn'orth regardless of who's talking and about what.

BeatriceBatchelor · 13/08/2025 17:40

Zainab sounded quite menacing when talking to Linda on the doorstep and I think less of Pa Malik for not teaching his daughter not to speak to her elders like that.

WombatCowgirl · 13/08/2025 18:58

I agree. I can't imagine a well- brought up 19 year old addressing their elders with that unpleasant arrogance. She is like Amber in that!

Gonners · 13/08/2025 19:01

Oh, I'm firmly on the side of anyone who's rude to Lynda! I could possibly even come round to liking Amber in those circumstances.

How interesting that Stella's principles meant she couldn't allow the BL wheat to rot in the ground, but she's perfectly happy to let the Home Farm wheat go hang.

Gonners · 13/08/2025 20:22

Stella knows it'll get done ... perhaps Alice or (better still) Adam will fall under the combine? Unless they're planning to write Brian out, which would be a shame ... but now that Judy Bennett has retired perhaps Charles Collingwood has decided to go too? I'd rather see Brian sail off into some exotic retirement with Miranda, to the enormous annoyance of Justin.

So long as he sells Home Farm, explaining to his rapacious off-spring (various) that since the land and building belong to him he is entirely within his rights to do so and that the Home Farm Partnership relies on having ownership of land to function so they'll need to be winding that up now, I would (reluctantly, because I find him the most entertaining character in the programme these days) say he can go. Only if he wants to.

I am getting increasingly fed up with the way the editorial team are making him grovel and kow-tow while the likes of Adam suggest he's past it and gaga.

Gonners · 13/08/2025 21:16

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime ... Yes! Yes! Yes! to the above.

Yes and "I've got leave to take" isn't the gotcha Stella thinks it is. Leave still has to be approved by the employer. I'm going off Stella.

It's not often done but employers can sue employees for breach of contract.

EBearhug · 14/08/2025 01:00

Most arable farms would surely restrict leave during harvest? We never went away in summer.

BeatriceBatchelor · 14/08/2025 04:06

Apart from the presence of Pip, I enjoyed tonight's episode. Brian's apology was gracious and I wonder if Stella is long for Ambridge.
