I’ve done it! I’ve switched to Radio 4 in the morning!

Does this mean I have finally grown up aged 53? I’ve been listening to Radio 2 for years . Couldn’t face Zoe so tried Greatest Hits- can’t bear the ads. Tried Virgin but Chris and crew were too much. Now Scot Mills is in place I just give up!
Still love Liza Tarbuck on radio 2 but for my daily news and calm start to my day it’s radio 4 all the way. What can I look forward to? Any particular shows I should listen out for? I can listen before 8.30 and after 4pm in the week.

My DM always listened to The Archers and probably me as a child. She also listened to Woman’s Hour. Is that still going?

Women’s hour!

Ah yes, thanks.

Have you tried 5 live? Radio 4 seems a big jump from a music based station

What age bracket are you ?

I listen to lots of music and podcasts on Spotify but first thing in the morning, DH’s choice of radio 6 is a bit much. I need a gentle start.😉

I like: Women's Hour, The Shipping Forecast, and whatever one off features they do here and there.
I detest: The Archers.

I switched away from Radio Four in the mornings at about the same age as you , OP, so perhaps I am growing down.Grin

I could no longer bear the dishonesty and evasion from politicians on the Today programme and the performative inquisitorial assertiveness of the interviewers.

Plus I couldn't bear the general awfulness of the news and my own self-righteous anger.

While I was still commuting I switched to Radio Three <deep calm exhalation of breath>. Now I just have radio silence and leave it to MN to make me sad and angryGrin

I get that. My car is currently on Classic fm if I’m not listening to my own music. I like podcasts such as Dish, Just One Thing ( rip MM) and Dr Rangan Chatterjee.

It's Nick Cave on Desert Island Discs right now!

He's coming across very well.

I listen to DIDs on BBC Sounds 👍🏻

I like radio 4 and I'm 47! I quite like gardeners question time. I don't really know what's happened to me, once upon a time I was in shorts raving until 4am. My mum warned me about this, she will be laughing from her grave.

I'm older and I listen to Radio 1. I guess I've not grown up yet! 😂

greengreyblue · 31/01/2025 12:43

J@SoupDragon Don't get me wrong I love music of all genres but it’s more the inane DJs as a pp put it. I want news first thing in the morning and a calm voice. I get that news may not be calm though.

Dammit I must have been innately old forever, I've been a Radio 4 addict since my teens and I'm nearly 70 now. World Service and R4Extra are good back ups.

Too much to say about all this to even start frankly, my brain is jumping about like a grasshopper - history of Woman's Hour ('tis Woman's not Women's, I just checked!), The Archers back in the good old days, which for me were the 80s, etc etc. Oh dear. 😂

greengreyblue · 31/01/2025 19:48

Really grateful for so many replies. 😀

I love In Touch - a weekly program for people who are blind or partially sighted. Despite being neither of those things it's a very interesting programme.

Thinking Aloud is excellent - a sociology half hour.

Be a bit wary of the 8pm slot weekdays, it's generally reporting on grim issues, or the misery hour as my partner calls it.

JumpingPumpkin · 31/01/2025 20:50

I was also a middle aged teen, switched to R4 for myself as soon as I left home at 18.

efeslight · 31/01/2025 20:57

Radio 4 was always the station I would listen to, am 50 now, been listening for 25 years, on and off.
I find some programmes just too dull now! Saturday mornings are OK.
Evening comedy slot lost its sparkle.
Maybe I've lost my sparkle😆

BrightOrangeDahlias · 31/01/2025 21:13

I agree the 6:30pm weekday comedy slots are generally cringeworthy. I usually turn them off, apart from "Best Medicine" which is OK and does actually make me laugh. The Infinite Monkey Cage is brilliant, but I listen to that on catchup on iplayer. I've also stumbled across "When it Hits the Fan", which talks about current topics from a PR p.o.v. One of the presenters is an ex-editor of The Sun, and this week he was talking about the Prince Harry case and gave a very personal account of it with his insights from within the industry.

Depending on the state of the world each day I might listen to The Today Programme on my way into work - but more and more I get annoyed by the presenters and interviewees shouting over eachother / irritated by the latest Trump idiocy / saddened by news from the various conflicts round the world. On these days I adopt a head in the sand approach swap over to Classic FM and get annoyed by the adverts instead!

Ooh I'd forgotten about Think Aloud - is it still on? I haven't caught it for a while.

Fags, mags and bags is a sitcom based in a Glaswegian newsagents. Very funny.

There's an episode where the teenage son decides he identifies and a vampire and expects them all to affirm his identity. Really well done.

RosemaryRabbit · 31/01/2025 21:32

*as a vampire

I’m 45 and have been flicking between R2 and R4 for a while, I’m not too keen on Scott Mills but also can’t cope with arguing with politicians first thing either! I do love Sara Cox on the way home though. There must be a good breakfast show out there somewhere?

ChocolateTruffleAssortment · 31/01/2025 21:45

I’m the opposite to you, I’ve been an R4 listener forever - since uni! - but it’s all so depressing I now listen to R1…

DeffoNeedANameChange · 31/01/2025 21:47

I'm a recentish convert and I love it! I had lunch with some colleagues today, and they were talking about the political situation in Germany, and I understood what they were going on about!! 🤯🤯

Next step: can't sleep without the Today Podcast on in the background...

viques · 31/01/2025 21:47

At all costs avoid Any Answers , lunchtime on Saturday . The only thing going for it is that it reminds you how important literate, articulate, professional journalists are for explaining complicated issues in an informative way.

We recently got a smart speaker (have resisted it for years because I don't like them spying on me, but the kitchen radio finally gave up the ghost and this was offered as a spare by a family member). I still listen to Today in my bedroom, and podcasts on the commute, but in the kitchen I'll try out different stations. It's great to not be limited to UK output. I listen to French and Irish stations because that's my background, but I'm sure there'd be some good English-language output from elsewhere.

Hellohelga · 31/01/2025 21:56

Love radio 4
