Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

Or could Neil's story actually be a sign of mental instability, mingling his memory of reading a Dickens' novel with his personal memories? Does that ever happen?

Edited

That would make more sense tbh

How about Stella gets a dog that hates Rosie and there ends up being an awkward convo as Stella thinks her fur baby is most important and pip thinks her human child is

my puppy does a good range of noises if the sw need to record some!!

Hmmm, i hadn't considered that a canine character expansion could lead to my own dog getting a part but now you mention it he would have the skill set.

I'd love it if Hannah spoke to Susan and Susan said something like 'What are you talking about? Neil's parents were Harry and Edna Carter, they lived over Felphersham way.'

Sadly having to edit just before posting as I've heard Chris confirm Hannah's story. Sad news.

TottersBlankly · 03/01/2025 19:25

Quite enjoyed tonight!

I’m liking Khalil more and more. (And little did he know that Kirsty actually is, at heart and historically, an eco-warrior.)

And, thank God, Hannah showed some sense.

But Chris knows all about it. Apparently.

WitcheryDivine · 03/01/2025 19:50

I haven’t heard tonight’s but I enjoy khalil because he has a personality, I wonder if the editorial team have realised that having practically identical teens burst into being at school leaving age is hardly likely to lead to audience engagement with the characters. Can anyone remember how old the Phoebe, pip type age group were when they first appeared? That’s the most boring cohort for me.

Incidentally, the average life expectancy in a nursing home is 12 months There’s a long tail to the distribution. DF has almost completed 6 years in a nursing home.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/01/2025 20:14

Pip was in her early teens and was a nasty know-it-all little creature whom Ruth praised for being gratuitously rude in public to a woman considerably her elder.

I think Phoebe was about fifteen when Kate decided to take her to RSA for a year. But she may have been younger; I can check.

That was in 2011, so she would have been thirteen.

Indeed. My aunt went into a nursing home at the age of 65 after developing a serious physical health problem and died there two weeks short of her 90th birthday. She was absolutely fine mentally and had become quite a minor celebrity as the Mother of the Home.

DeanElderberry · 03/01/2025 20:52

I don't like the ecologically irresponsible rogue beaver introduction proposal, but could become resigned to it if the people who know about it remain silent leaving everyone else convinced there are NO BEAVERS IN AMBRIDGE except David who keeps seeing them and not being believed and eventually becomes notorious for his irrational beaver obsession and tendency to shoot objects he imagines to be beavers who that are actually non-beaver things like footballs and pumpkins and Amazon parcels.

Have some , , , , , , , , , , , use them as you please.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/01/2025 21:00

Have not yet heard tonight's episode, but will just say that my grandmother was in a care home for several years and died 3 months short of her 100th birthday.

Thanks for the new thread GaspOde.

Adding to the cute puppy photo and talk of beloved teddies on the last thread I add this photo of a crocheted ferret (what else have I to do at 4 o' clock in the morning but scroll through photos of ferret knitting patterns!)

He's adorable.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 03/01/2025 21:12

I've just heard tonight's. Khalil is awful. He can be swept away when a beaver dam breaks. Annoying little twerp.

I thought the strawberry liqueur was meant to be tequila rose but they can’t name it as that’s a brand name.

I thought this but never tried it. Thought it looked vile but Rochelle has piqued my interest somewhat Confused

I'm not sure the patients would appreciate their fingers being nipped!!

Puppy is so cute.

LillianGish · 03/01/2025 22:54

The only possible reason for Khalil to overhear from behind the woodpile is so that he can let the cat - or rather beaver - out of the bag at some future date. There’s no way he’ll be able to keep this to himself. All a bit far fetched that he would have gone looking for hibernating dormice in the very spot Rex and Kirsty were meeting the beaver smugglers.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/01/2025 23:18

Of course he saw them and then went for a nosy. They probably tiptoed ostentatiously, and said "hush" to each other like the pirates of Penzance, stopping to say "it was the cat" at intervals.

The surprising thing is that the hyper-protective mother who wouldn't let him go as far as the village without his elder sister keeping an eye on him, really quite recently, allows him out after dark at all.

Ficklemind · 04/01/2025 06:24

Walking around a cold wood in the pitch dark looking for hibernating dormice?!
I don't mind Khalil, is he the same age as Henry? Stark difference in maturity if so.

Chris wanted a quick bunk up, a few years back Hannah would have jumped in. I'm glad she didn't, her character has become really pleasant.

A quick google shows, Rex and Kirsty could face up to 2 years in prison and an unlimited fine.

TottersBlankly · 04/01/2025 06:28

Kirsty seems mostly bored and frustrated these days. She’d probably adore another trial.

JoelenesParrot · 04/01/2025 07:47

I don’t think I would consider an illegal activity for a grant-funded project- although the rewilding project seems very unaccountable. The governance of the project seems very hands-off. Who is actually Kirsty and Rex’s boss?

TottersBlankly · 04/01/2025 08:01

Oh, Lord …

So, this time around is Khalil also going to be prosecuted, or just a prosecution witness? He won’t mind - but his poor mother will be tearing her hair out. And her husband will call her a neglectful parent. Oh dear.

Nettleteaser101 · 04/01/2025 09:13

Wish they had drowned Khalil in the river, what a full on kid he is. What if beavers, just by some strange coincidence turned up at the re-wilding and took up home . They are sunk now anyway because that kid isn't going to keep quiet, unless they take him on as a volunteer or something.

Bruisername · 04/01/2025 09:30

So just listening. Hannah is definitely developing as a character - unlike similar of her age (pip for eg!). Chris is super dull isn’t he? And what terrible pick up lines. Glad Hannah came to her senses

illegal beaver activities - gosh!! Seems totally idiotic. Do they think no one will notice? Is Kirsty going to pretend she’s building dams? and Kirsty saying it’s controversial when it’s actually illegal? And then the PSA on how beavers can benefit the landscape. And where do these illegal beavers come from? I hope they’re not the equivalent of puppy farmed. And the beaver lady called Neo 🙄

agree that Khalil walking the woods at night given his mum has shown overprotective tendencies before is consistent

BeatriceBatchelor · 04/01/2025 10:04

Oh, I was hoping Chris and Hannah would become a likeable couple but you reckon he just wants a ONS?
