Archers thread #179: Beavers, livestock, ferrets, but nododo! Discuss The Archers here.

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

They’re busy bodies who want to know everyone else’s business but get upset if asked about their own

Sidebeforeself · 13/01/2025 16:47

Beavers, bridge , bunny boilers and busy bodies..its all a load of bollocks!

Sidebeforeself · 13/01/2025 16:47

And no that wasn’t a suggestion for the next thread title!

iratepirate · 13/01/2025 16:54

Perhaps it should be.

Fink · 13/01/2025 16:58

I think Brian was just cornered in front of Justin and doesn't have a clue about bridge. No doubt he can play whist sufficently well to get the general concept, but I doubt he has the first idea of the finer details. Wednesday will be a disaster.

Jill was opposed to private education (although Phil prevailed there and David and Elizabeth were sent to boarding schools) and I think campaigned (for or against, can't remember) when Borchester Grammar School was forced to merge with the local secondary modern and become Borchester Green comprehensive school. Kathy Perks was definitely against, I do remember that, as she taught at the grammar school. Odd really, as she was a Home Economics teacher and might have had more to do in a school where more pupils were looking for vocational subjects.

Bit late to this, but I wasted to add that Jill was anti hunting when that was going on locally, which was non-conforming of her. She was also unhappy about Shula becoming active in the Young Conservatives and tried to persuade her to give Felpersham Young Liberals a go instead. As a character she’s definitely been shown as an independent thinker with her own opinions on political issues. Baking a mean lemon drizzle cake doesn’t rule that out.

Madcats · 13/01/2025 16:59

I'm bored with Rochelle already. Shouldn't she be back at work somewhere? It doesn't sound as if she has to look after the kids (so presumably has no maintenance to live off). Apologies if I missed her excuse.

I have a couple of acquaintances who play bridge quite seriously, one of whom is a Bridge Director. I understand that the basic rules are easy enough, but you need a good memory, teamwork and evolving strategy.

Bruisername · 13/01/2025 17:06

Rochelle doesn’t seem bothered about her kids

DeanElderberry · 13/01/2025 17:37

Jill was also anti blood sports. She put up with Shula hunting but didn't approve. Brookfield never ran shoots.

I think Fallon didn't tell Harrison that she didn't want children a few years after they got married so it was a bit late, but they should of had this conversation before they got hitched.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 13/01/2025 19:04

Rochelle is a teejus grifter.

Maybe Rex is gay, just hasn't acknowledged it yet on account of his appalling father.

Not that Rochelle would be remotely appealing even if he weren't.

Calling · 13/01/2025 19:13

I find Joy irritating. Is she actually meant to be irritating?

DadDadDad · 13/01/2025 19:15

New thread on AIBU: "We're due to move into a new house and the friendly neighbours asked if there was anything they could do to help. We have two DDs (twins, age 2) so I asked if they could not make any noise (music etc) after 7pm, because our girls really struggle if they don't get to sleep at their regular time. I think they looked a little bit taken aback although they didn't say anything. But surely it's not AIBU to want two toddlers to not be disturbed by noise in the evenings?"

PS - applause to Joy for being totally assertive about borrowing the key!

Bruisername · 13/01/2025 19:15

So her kids are teens. We really don’t need more teens. Particularly those with the genetics of Joy and Rochelle

and why does Kirsty think she should be making all the decisions about the rewilding when she is just an employee?

this house sale is moving very fast isn’t it? How on earth are they both going to fit in that house? Is she going to end up moving in with Kirsty?

Don’t enjoy Mick and Joy scenes

echt · 13/01/2025 19:20

"Our" Rochelle? Mick's a bit forward, isn't he? Something not quite right about him, but Joy seems to have backbone.

Even by Tom standards, Tom was cheeky about the starry ones' need for quiet.

And yes, the crowded house will be very bad, very soon.

TottersBlankly · 13/01/2025 20:02

Had Tom and Natasha actually discussed the new living arrangements with Helen in detail?

Because it sounds to me as if she’s about to lose her bedroom but doesn’t know it …

DeanElderberry · 13/01/2025 20:02

I did like Joy's attitude to Tom (and Kirsty's to Ruth, yesterday). The Ambridge Revolutionary Party is starting to gain momentum.

Fink · 13/01/2025 20:03

Do we know who Tom and Natasha's current neighbours are? I bet they're glad to get rid of them.

Bruisername · 13/01/2025 20:06

Are the beechwood houses detached?

must say - retired couple at home all day vs unruly toddlers at home all day is the worst combo (maybe replace the couple with a wfh couple)

but I get the impression the twins are at the childminders during the week so limited time at home? Weekends might be hairy

TottersBlankly · 13/01/2025 20:07

Indeed!

But Helen. I’m guessing she assumes all her Tinder ‘meeting someone’s’ will occur in the gracious, spacious ‘master’ bedroom she’s always occupied at Beechwood. Whereas T&N have probably already mentally moved her into the box room. With a single bed.

Bruisername · 13/01/2025 20:08

Is it a 4 or 5 bed?

so that’s one bed for the twins
one for Tom and tash (the master suite…)
one for the boys
one for helen (the box room)

Bruisername · 13/01/2025 17:06

Rochelle doesn’t seem bothered about her kids

I reckon something happened and she wasn't able to/ was prevented from being the primary carer. Perhaps she has been in prison( for stalking or harassment), or was she an addict or had mental health difficulties.
Joy at one point asked if she was seeing the children and Rochelle said something along the lines of "yes when I can", so she obviously isn't a mother desperate to see them.
There will have been something shameful going on which is why Joy was telling all the lies about what an amazing daughter Rochelle was, when clearly she isn't.

I like Joy. I'd far rather listen to her than many of the characters - Justin and Fagash Lil for starters.

The trouble with those newfangled thanks emoticons is they only let you choose one.

That needs ❤ 🧀🛌 👭😡📺🐖😫❤
