Archers thread #179: Beavers, livestock, ferrets, but nododo! Discuss The Archers here.

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

He can't be that offended, he's choosing to live with them.

Perhaps your parents are as highly strung as you are.

Oh! That was quite unnecessarily personal.

BeatriceBatchelor · 11/01/2025 19:12

So shall we get back to The Archers ...

That is uncalled for and offensive.

I’m glad the Fallon and Harrison thing is potentially coming to a head, although with the scriptwriters they could string along this next bit god knows how long. But anyway, it’s good that there’s some movement versus just ongoing awkwardness over and over and over.

Spambridge · 11/01/2025 19:14

@BeatriceBatchelor , not RTFT, but by all means return to discussing The Archers.

BeatriceBatchelor · 11/01/2025 19:22

I'm looking forward to Natasha, Tom and Helen being housemates in the house that Helen looks down on but also considers to be her home.

Gonners · 11/01/2025 19:25

Don't forget Henry, Jack, Seren and Dippity - 7 people (including Helen) in the same house is a recipe for Stabnight #2.

Sidebeforeself · 11/01/2025 19:30

Im looking forward to Tom realising they cant afford to buy the house ( or cant afford the mortgage) cos he’s been wilfully ignoring Natasha’s spending habits

Then they can all move in with Pat and Tony 😀

Some of you sound like hard work. This isn’t AIBU!

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 11/01/2025 19:42

Sorry you are having a hard time @ExitPursuedByABare and @stilldumdedumming. FlowersFlowers

The SWs have delivered on my new year wish of more Fallon and less Harrison! Ha! Just the dog to go now.

Re bedrooms at The Bull didn't Peggy and Jack have Lilian, Jennifer and Tony all living there? I assume it's fairly roomy upstairs.

Gonners · 11/01/2025 15:19

It's just a form of what's known as phatic communication: a "social lubricant" rather than something intended to convey information or start a conversation. A bit like saying "Morning!" to someone in the street, or the hated (by me) "Have a nice day!" Around here, a lot of people greet each other in the street with "All right?" where the "all" = "aw" and the "right" has a glottal stop in place of the "t". The correct response is "All right?" 😁

See also “see you!” as a goodbye, especially for complete strangers who you will probably never see again in your life

I expect he'll be moving closer to his parents, and brother and sister in law and their children, though.

Still not his wife.

To which the only possible response is often "Not if I see you first!"

Hercisback1 · 11/01/2025 20:15

Asking almost constantly posts rude comments to others, calls people out on all sorts, and generally disagreeable. It's time someone said something rude back. Sorry for my comment but it's the fourth or fifth time in the last few threads they've disagreed with me and not stopped.

This thread is usually kind and convivial. It would be nice for it to return that way.

Gonners
I didn't even notice the "Yes mum" reply ... the only "Yes mums" I've spotted have been from Harrison to his boss, and I assume those are his attempt at "Yes ma'am".

Mum is how "ma'am" is pronounced by members of the armed forces when they address a female officer, so perhaps the police are the same?

nope. You learn that on your first day (well we did when the Women's Royal Army Corps was a thing, way back when Pontius was a pilot) - it is "ma'am - it rhymes with ham"

That's what I remember from way, way back ... my Welsh dad said it sounded to him as though they were being addressed a "mum".

Interesting, and thank you. I was taken aback when the soldier who stayed here overnight (she was driving my daughter and they needed to break a journey) addressed my daughter as "mum", because I thought for a moment she was talking to me. So I quietly asked my daughter, later, and was told that was how "my soldiers" said it, except about/to the Queen who was Marm. Maybe the usage has changed; this was six or seven years ago.

OverArmour · 11/01/2025 21:14

I suppose it wouldn’t be the Archers thread if we didn’t have a mild ding dong every few months or so.

I wonder whether they pay new or younger characters less money. They do seem to introduce them quite often recently, and they don’t seem to hang around for long but take up an inordinate amount of airtime for the bit that they are around. Particularly when we haven’t heard from some of the longer term cast members too. It’s weird because they seem to talk a lot about 13 minutes not being very long but then we have all these random new characters introduced.

People are allowed to disagree. They're allowed to disagree more than once. Disagreeing is not rudeness.

Hercisback1 · 11/01/2025 21:25

There's been rudeness from Asking too.

However it's totally derailing the thread. I'll get my comments deleted and not post here again.

Shame, I like listening and discussing but it's feeling very personal now.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/01/2025 21:26

They pay more to actors who've been working for the programme for longer, certainly; that's in the pay scales people find occasionally and post.

This one is from 2017, but shows it: downloads.bbc.co.uk/radio/commissioning/equity-audio-agreement.pdf

  1. Engagement Fees for The Archers (a table that doesn't reproduce well here, plus "The following additional payments apply for extended service to The Archers: "30 years or more £12.00 per episode "40 years or more £15.00 per episode"

It's all risen since then, but I haven't noticed anyone saying that the long-service payment has stopped existing.

No need to get anything deleted @Hercisback1 Stay and chat about The Archers.
