Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

Harrison plainly needs a change, but his senior sending him away from all family support?

Do we know exactly where his parents live? If it's east Lancashire then he would be quite a bit closer to family support than he is presently (depending on which part of Yorkshire he's being sent to, it's a big place).

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/01/2025 19:13

Well, I think we all know what he's being sent to do. He'd be rubbish at it.

I don’t! Explain, please.

Sidebeforeself · 10/01/2025 20:01

Haven’t listened yet but I’m in Yorkshire!! I’ll start putting the barricades up now…

FizzingAda · 10/01/2025 20:06

Yep, Fallon definitely agreed too quickly and with enthusiasm.

I assumed it was to do with paedophile gangs but I suppose I could be wrong. It's something to do with children that can't be mentioned on the Archers.

Harrison would be the worst person to work on something like that! He'd be the equivalent of Tommy Robinson completely jeopardising any chance of a criminal conviction by confronting the perpetrators, threatening them, etc. Ma'am has rightly analysed that he takes children's work too personally, so placing him on full-time abused/trafficked/raped children's cases would be inadvisable.

Also, I don't think TA would be that topical. Isn't it recorded quite a while before broadcast? I know they have news inserts, but this feels like a SL that has been planned in advance.

I thought it would be some sort of organised crime network, but not paedophiles.

Obviously we don't know for sure, because it's so sensitive he can't even tell his wife.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 10/01/2025 20:26

I loathe Khalil. Who was he speaking to? Henry?

WitcheryDivine · 10/01/2025 20:26

Not caught up on tonight’s yet but suddenly remembered the horrible jarring way Harrison said he feels like he’s drowning last night. Expects more sympathy for that than he gave his poor wife after she actually nearly drowned. Tosser.

By family support I mean his wife.

Yes, that summed up the self-centred git in a single phrase, didn't it. Self-attributed feelings of drowning as against actual near-drowning is absolutely Carpet Burns in a nutshell. He has been very much "I lost MY BABY.... Oh, and my wife had a miscarriage but she was fine," all along.

I expect he'll be moving closer to his parents, and brother and sister in law and their children, though.

Gonners · 10/01/2025 20:45

I have no interest in what Harrison is being sent to do - his reluctance to tell Fallon suggests that the scriptwriters don't much care either - and am just hopelessly optimistic that it is something so secret that he's never heard of again.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 10/01/2025 21:03
  • his reluctance to tell Fallon suggests that the scriptwriters don't much care either

Or they haven't thought of anything.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/01/2025 21:10

SPYCOPS!
He'll drop back in to Ambridge from time to time wearing long hair, neck and facial tattoos and multiple piercings. And those horrible earlobe plug things.

Or shaven head and Swastika tattoos

Gonners · 10/01/2025 21:25

The "my love" business just made me think "So, this relationship is definitely over, then", which warmed my cold, dead heart as I quite like Fallon and frankly even Will Grundy or Justin Elliott would be an improvement over Harrison.

Ladybugger · 10/01/2025 22:11

Just here to say again - Fallon and Ed will have an affair, I know it!
I can't wait for Harrison to go and I think actually for both of them they do think they want to possibly end the relationship but neither admitted it. You can love someone deeply but end up knowing it's not right. They both sounded really relieved at the end.

stilldumdedumming · 10/01/2025 22:50

Thank you for your kind thoughts everyone. It's surprising how life changes. Big changes and then creeping changes.

Has anyone heard the R4 series on county lines. It's rife round here and a genuine concern for our children and now grandchildren. Harrison would be appalling at that kind of job.

I'm finding it hard to think what might be suitable.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 10/01/2025 22:50

I haven’t listened to tonight yet but I’m surprised that people feel that Harrison has
had some success in his job to be come a Sargent. Whilst he is obviously useless and undeserving of any sort of promotion, Sargent is only one level above entry level Constable and in an institution like this I’d expect this level of promotion to happen based on employment longevity experience (maybe with some sort of application pretence for the job). This ethic seems to be supported by comments re the Yorkshire job suggesting promotion (or sidestepping but more likely a job with a lot of responsibility for a Sargent…).

In my experience ‘Wrap up warm’ is standard send off in southern home counties.

ExitPursuedByABare · 10/01/2025 23:08

My cousin was in the police for years but never passed his sergeant exam.

Ok, well I’m relieved to hear that the police have higher standards than the government run corporations I have experience of!

Bruisername · 11/01/2025 07:26

I understand in the police that a large proportion of constables remain one their whole career. Promotions can often be moving to a different area etc but not necessarily increasing rank eg moving to firearms unit

Bruisername · 11/01/2025 07:46

Talking about rogue rewilding of lynx on Today

DeanElderberry · 11/01/2025 07:53

I've never knowingly heard 'wrap up warm' but I'll keep my ears open for it.
