Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to have a moribund camper van parked indefinitely outside your home, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Could it be a ‘no room at the inn’ kind of storyline (trying to be generous here) in the run-up to Christmas?

I also had to check that I was on live radio 4, the first few mins was bizarre!

Surely you have a bit of an explore and put your bags away before making coffee! Also, that sounded like a pod machine, don’t think Kate would approve of that. The weirdest thing for me was the clip clopping noise Kate and Jakob were making on their walk. Were they riding coconut shell shoed horses?

I thought that too! For a moment I wondered if they were running a three-legged race!

Love the Terrence Jolly story. You couldn't make it up.

OverArmour · 25/11/2024 17:22

The Americans sounded like they’d walked out of a 1950s play. But also they had the characters of Brian and Jenny, the 1950s American version of them. God knows what that was all about.

Sidebeforeself · 25/11/2024 17:23

I thought the American lady was the actress who plays Jolene , recast as a cost of living measure!

WombatCowgirl · 25/11/2024 17:24

Since the scene with the coconut horses was a discussion of holidays, I wonder if the Americans are going to suggest a house swap to Kate as "payment"? It would be bizarre, but no more so than the actual plot!

Bruisername · 25/11/2024 17:26

I we going to have a recreation of The Holiday

Godesstobe · 25/11/2024 17:27

About 6 weeks ago the little village where I live in the South East woke up to find itself without the internet. It remained out for 7 days. This was a total pain for me (couldn't watch TV or listen to TA on iPlayer and I ran out of data on my phone for the first time) but it was much worse for people who WFH and for the village shop (who could only accept cash and who couldn't open the Post Office) and for the pub. Apparently the copper wires had been stolen and it took a long time to replace them.
The day after I arrived at my mother's in Wiltshire last week the internet went down in the whole village and only came back at lunchtime today. The explanation is the same as in my own village - the copper wiring had been stolen.
I have been Googling and apparently this is a thing and is happening in villages all over the country.
There's a potential SL for TA.

(And, yes, I thought copper wires had been replaced by fibre optic cables too.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/11/2024 17:54

Godesstobe
There's a potential SL for TA.

This has already happened in TA, in January 2012, and there were "hilarious" scenes during which Oliver helped Caroline by finding an ancient card-reader somewhere so guests at Grey Gables could pay when they signed out or in, I forget which. And Elizabeth irritated everyone by still having a connection at Lower Loxley and offering the use of it to anyone who bought food or drink at The Orangery, and Jim organised a rota to check up on anyone who might be in trouble because their phone wasn't working, or some such.

Please don’t let Kate give birth in a yurt.

Fink · 25/11/2024 18:35

Also, that sounded like a pod machine

That's exactly what I thought too @TherapistInATabard It puzzled me that they would think a pod machine was 'really good'. I mean, it's probably not as bad as a drip machine, but it's not exactly a proper coffee. They're fine if you haven't got the space for anything more, but you wouldn't be impressed enough to see one in an Airbnb that you'd comment on it!

Plus, Jakob would know that they're a false economy, and Kate would know that they're bad for the environment. For goodness' sake, just get a better sound effect!

Bruisername · 25/11/2024 19:16

Well as I’m being ignored by my teens and have nothing better to do I will listen…

sleeping in a yurt is my idea of hell. Poor Jakob. Did they even change the sheets for their illegal guests? And why give them the wifi password? Are we going to have Jakob arrested in 6 months because his IP address was used for illegal means?

the American accent seems like a caricature - like English accents in American dramas (like Friends)

as for Faith having grown up here - I need @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime to tell me more!!! Are they the scammers then? Or is Chuck just an arse?

wouldn’t Kate have asked her surname? It seems unusual in such a small village and Faith doesn’t seem that old

and oh my god - another person turning up with a false booking. At least Ruth has some balls.

didnt she say she had 6 year old twins missing school but Ruth said teens on phone - why would you drag teens out of school to stay on a farm for 4 nights?

and gosh the village acting to beat the scam - curing the ills of society one issue at a time

Abra1t · 25/11/2024 19:17

It’s the Russians hacking in to the site to Bring Down Ambridge.

DadDadDad · 25/11/2024 19:18

Brookfield: In what circumstances would someone book a break in an English village in late November and drag two teenagers out of school to come along?

Bankholidayhelp · 25/11/2024 19:18

Is this utter rubbish going to continue all week? I am normally very much an addict. Listing at 7pm and 2pm and the omnibus. Today was the first time on godknows how many years I switched over at 2pm and switched back at 2.15

If I was Yacob I would be telling Kate that was it, end of relationship; she's taken making decisions that aren't hers to make to the nth degree.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/11/2024 19:18

Bruisername · 25/11/2024 10:31

I’m under 50 with older teens who are horrified by how shit the archers is. Ds rolls his eyes at the heavy signposting. Particularly when it’s a PSA or PC storyline

so neither of mine are going to listen when older as I did because I listened with my mum.

if they want younger listeners they need to focus on quality writing- not coming up with SL that older people seem to think younger people will find riveting

Ahem! Not “older people”. SWs and editors.

Bankholidayhelp · 25/11/2024 19:19

Oh god now Brookfield is affected

Farce

Particularly 16 year olds (which is what I heard rather than 6 @Bruisername ). Shouldn't they be preparing for GCSEs or A Levels?!

DadDadDad · 25/11/2024 19:20

@Bruisername - she said she had sixteen year old teens in the car

Fink · 25/11/2024 19:20

Faith doesn’t seem that old

Kate said yesterday that they were in their 70s, and she wasn't corrected.

DadDadDad · 25/11/2024 19:23

And yes, @Bruisername , wouldn't Kate be asking a former Ambridge resident what her parents' names were, where they worked, which families she remembers from the village etc?

Bankholidayhelp · 25/11/2024 19:23

Is Faith going to stay in Ambridge as her husband seems a grumpy bugger.

Bruisername · 25/11/2024 19:25

Fink · 25/11/2024 19:19

Oh I misheard - that’s totally stupid!!!

Fink · 25/11/2024 19:27

Gah, the pod coffee machine strikes again!

The only thing that gives me hope is the CA saying the Grundys spot an opportunity tomorrow. I really hope that they try to resurrect the Grange Farm bnb idea: 'It's me grandson's room really, but he's in prison at the moment so it's going spare. My wife does a lovely fry up in the morning. You'll have to be up early, mind, she leaves for work at 7. Don't mind the mess, it's only turkey shit, it'll wash off. Tell you what, I'll give you a night's free guest membership of the Cider Club.'
