Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to have a moribund camper van parked indefinitely outside your home, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

I will be a bit cross if they dead Leonard and not bloody Ruth.

Lol @Brefugee that must have been a local German version of St Nicholas - the standard Dutch Sinterklaas doesn't visit homes unsolicited (shoes are left at the fire/radiator - you can pay a local Helper St Nick to visit) and there are no grass skirts! Thankfully the blacking up (face only) has mostly stopped in the last few years, it's just sooty smears now.

I don't miss much about living in the Netherlands but really miss Sinterklaas. So I'd welcome a bit of seasonal mischief in Ambridge.

that's village life here though, they do All The Things. It is very sweet.

Brefugee · 03/12/2024 12:39

oh god, are they going to shoe-horn the assisted dying stuff in if they not-quite-ded-leonard?

Bruisername · 03/12/2024 12:41

would that be too political? Could be seen as bias if they go down the ‘lovely peaceful death’ route or the ‘pressured to end it early’ route

I think the cinnamon stew was for Olwen and she didn't like it.

Natasha isn’t eating Pat’s stew and when questioned, she notes she doesn’t really eat regular meals. She works too hard for that and, besides, the stew seems to have cinnamon in it and she doesn’t care for that.

I'd like Ruth to have one of those head injuries where they come round speaking in a completely different accent.

Not that I dislike the Geordie accent, just what Ruth does to it.

I love Leonard"s voice. Wish he'd move into Brookfield.

Gonners · 03/12/2024 13:36

I love Leonard"s voice. Wish he'd move into Brookfield.

That would be fine, provided that all the rest of them moved out.

FlyingFlapjack · 03/12/2024 13:43

Thanks @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime . I thought you would confirm.
I remember the episode.

@BeatriceBatchelor , Ruth's accent is not geordie. The character is northumbrian not geordie.

harriethoyle · 03/12/2024 14:36

Ruth's accent is a travesty is what it is @FlyingFlapjack 😂

FlyingFlapjack · 03/12/2024 14:43

I think it's fine. Her natural accent is nicer. Neither accent is geordie.
Ruth's accent is much more bearable than many of the other characters' accents.

Brefugee · 03/12/2024 14:45

btw i put a pinch of cinammon in my moussaka (vaguely follow the Linda McCartney version) and it really gives it a lift.

OK but there was also something wrong with the stew she made for Olwen.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/12/2024 15:10

I just heard the Lynda bit again on the car radio. Why on earth does she think David and Ruth should police Leonard's behaviour. Why does nobody just tell her to piss off?

Fink · 03/12/2024 15:17

I liked Olwen. She made a change from all the people in TA who flounce out of jobs without giving notice, or sack people without any regard for employment law. Didn't she have a genuinely believable story of losing her job?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/12/2024 16:01

I have a feeling it was Pat''s vegetarian stew, and the chances are it was therefore inedible, but it was not mentioned in Lowfield.

Hadn't Olwen been kicked out by her husband, and that was why she was sleeping in her car?

It wasn't the cinnamon.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 03/12/2024 16:10

What happened to Olwen in the end? I'd forgotten all about her. ISTR it got edgy for a little while, then I stopped listening for a bit.

BeatriceBatchelor · 03/12/2024 16:16

Ruth's accent is not geordie. The character is northumbrian not geordie.

I stand corrected!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/12/2024 16:16

Olwen had a serious row with Pat, left the charity-computer Pat had given her on the doorstep one morning, and went away very thoroughly, after Helen had been fair-to-average vile to and about her and made no secret of despising her.

Fink · 03/12/2024 17:00

Hadn't Olwen been kicked out by her husband, and that was why she was sleeping in her car?

Yes, but IIRC she had also lost her job around the same time. She believed it because she was bolshy around workers' rights, but had no proof and hadn't been there long enough to get any kind of protection.

I think it is traditional to add a little cinnamon to moussaka. I always do. I love it and on the strength of this mention I have just added aubergines to my next supermarket delivery.

@MereDintofPandiculation , Out of interest, why did you start?

@JoelenesParrot , it was Natasha not Olwen.

Learning Welsh? Nice language. I was brought up within view of Wales, lots of Welsh or Welsh derived place-names around. I gave up and started learning Russian instead. Much easier. Might try again now there’s the internet and all sorts of things to help, back in the 70s it wasn’t so easy.

In case you get the wrong idea, I’m absolutely hopeless at languages, I just enjoy seeing how they’re put together.

Edited

Hers is the accent I hate most. I wonder if it depends on where you live/where you were brought up.

FlyingFlapjack · 03/12/2024 18:31

Lynda mispronounced Mari Lwyd, but she has form for over-exaggerated attempts. She got both words wrong. Mari is like marry, Lwyd is like Lu-id but one syllable.

Yes, that’s what I thought. Bad enough when people come and suggest you should get your elderly father to do this, that or the other, but Leonard isn’t even related!

I don’t want him dedded. He’s resourceful.
