Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to have a moribund camper van parked indefinitely outside your home, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! Over to you!

Prisoners do not have access to the internet, so if George is involved in the holiday cottage scam there would have to be some horribly convoluted and unrealistic SL to explain it. And crass though the scam SL is, it still seems a tad too sophisticated for the likes of Baseball. I imagine his criminality takes a more direct form.

(In some prisons it is possible to send emails to prisoners but the staff then print them out and hand them to the prisoner and the prisoner is not able to reply by email.)

And in the real world mobile phones are rife in prisons, sorry

WhitbyBee · 27/11/2024 20:16

I am hoping for fire at the barn
Illegally being let- everyone off to join George

PassTheLemonDrizzle · 27/11/2024 20:35

I'm not sure if this has already been suggested but I'm wondering if Clive could be the scammer. I know he's not the biggest fan of Kate and I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to upset the residents of Ambridge after he wasn't welcomed with open arms after sheltering George.

Absolutely! I wouldn't expect low-status criminal George to have one, but his masters will.

Bruisername · 27/11/2024 20:42

I actually think it would be quite wholesome if they were using their contraband phones to set up a scam holiday let website

WagnersFourthSymphony · 27/11/2024 20:42

There are even types of mobile marketed as prison phones because they are very small and hard to detect, eg the Jelly.

PassTheLemonDrizzle · 27/11/2024 21:14

My theory is that Clive visited George in prison and either gave him a pep talk or pulled in a few favours. It would fit in with George suddenly shifting from being terrified to a proto tough guy. I doubt Clive has the know how to orchestrate the Borchester Homes scam on his own but George definitely does...

Gosh, I wasn't aware of the Jelly! What a shame I didn't hear of it sooner ... i.e. last week. A tiny phone is my dream, as I only use it for calls and texts. As it is, I'm now coming to terms with an iPhone SE, which is very pretty but frankly a tinier Android would have done the job.

Godesstobe · 27/11/2024 21:21

I should have made it clear that I was saying prisoners don't have formal access to the internet. As we know, prisons are awash with illicit mobile phones and prisoners obviously have illicit access to the internet.

However, as far as we know, George does not have his own mobile phone in prison. Prisoners higher up in the food chain will have one, but the point I was trying to make was that, if one of these prisoners is behind the holiday cottage scam, I can't see why they would need George's involvement (without some convoluted and unrealistic SL to account for it). Anyone who has the nous to set up an online fraud is hardly going to need to depend on George to suggest possible addresses. (And,in any case, surely George would target Ambridge residents he has a grudge against and not Jakob, Ruth and Jim who haven't done him any harm as far as I recall.) In addition, as far as we know George's "friends" in prison are the likes of Baseball and Clarkey whose MO appears to be nailing people's heads to the floor and not fraud.

For those who are interested, Amazon are doing a Black Friday deal on the world's smallest mobile phone. Very convenient for dog walking as you don't need to have a bag or pocket to store it and can simply plug it up your rectum instead.

I had not thought that Uncle Clive might be involved. That does actually seem quite plausible. I do hope not as it would probably mean that George has not only gone to the Dark Side, but is likely to stay there. I have a real soft spot for George (which I know puts me in a minority) and I really wanted his prison sentence to be the spur that helped him turn his life around. If his pantomime villain uncle is now his mentor, poor George seems doomed.

Littlemissgobby · 27/11/2024 21:51

I have been listening to all these people randomly turning up in archers thinking they have booked holidays. It actually happened to a carer of mine. Her and a boyfriend went to a cottage for the weekend and there was no key there and the owner said. What are you doing here? They even showed the booking, but it wasn't. LegitThey had to fight quite a bit to get the money back off the booking company. So I wonder how many times this actually happens to win away. It's a good thing, but you would think.Wouldn't you that the booking company would have to ask for proof of ownership, if you're going to put your picture on there website.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 27/11/2024 22:18

I'm so bored with this storyline.

JoelenesParrot · 27/11/2024 22:28

I hope Jim doesn’t allow Joel to stay. He immediately made me think of the horrible young man who groomed, defrauded and then murdered old people living in an idyllic village in the countryside. Timothy Spall starred in the drama and it was extremely painful to watch. Please don’t let that happen to Jim- hopefully Ali-stare and Jazzer’s presence make it unlikely…

Dragonsandcats · 27/11/2024 22:35

I thought the joel actor was awful. This storyline just seems a bit ridiculous.

Bruisername · 27/11/2024 22:38

I was a bit worried about Jim’s mental state when he started going on about handing himself in to the police. But I reassured myself it was just shit writing

That's all very well in the warmer weather, if you're wearing baggy shorts, but possibly less than ideal in the winter?

And him an Olivier winner an' everyfink....

LillianGish · 27/11/2024 23:21

Please make it stop.

JanFebAndOnwards · 28/11/2024 00:00

I couldn’t believe my already sore ears when a third would be holiday-maker turned up tonight.
And fancy the (adopted) Yankee gal turning out to have been six year old Eddie’s squeeze. (Yeah Eddie Grundy would not have remembered that).

What larks.

JanFebAndOnwards · 28/11/2024 00:01

😖

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/11/2024 02:20

So instead of checking into a place with a proper bed, Chuck & Faith are going to sleep on a couple of camp beds with a random woman and her teenagers? In a barn?

Oh. OK.

Nettleteaser101 · 28/11/2024 05:00

Joel sounds like all the other young men in TA.
Jazzer offering him the barn without asking David or Ruth, shades of Kate there.
How much privacy is there in the barn or will it be like when everyone had to sleep in the underground during the war?
Would you recognise someone when they were six? What a crap story all round. Well done SW you have out done yourselves this time, this is surely Grammy material.

Nettleteaser101 · 28/11/2024 05:04

Sorry not the Grammys but I think you know what I mean.

That's what ones cleavage is for, surely?

Ambridge · 28/11/2024 07:50

The chances of the (allegedly) American Faith being able to follow Jazzer's accent and indeed hold a conversation with him without subtitles seemed a bit remote to me.

Are they going for a rip-off of another well-known story? Yea, for there was no room at the inn, but they found a stable barn with central heating, washing facilities and camp beds, and there they rested (I paraphrase)
