Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to hear more from Wesley the ashtray collector, or other unusual views.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @DeanElderberry for the pithy phrase in the thread title and @CaptainMyCaptain for suggesting it should go in there. At least we've got the spooky disco out of the way for now. Plenty of wooden dialogue in the last few episodes that could go on the village bonfire next week. It's all been too dispiriting to discuss in greater depth. I'll just say that I don't hold out any great hopes that the production team will make a good job of reflecting concern in the farming community about the changes announced in the Budget to inheritance tax for farms. So often they get an expert to talk them through stuff like this but instead of ending up with a realistic storyline they pick out the bits they like the sound of and cobble them together in a totally unrealistic way. Maybe I'll be proved wrong this time. I hope so.

Over to you!

Another thing on the AI - Justin asked what was happening and it said Kirsty was clearing brambles - had one of them gone in to say that was what they were doing or is this AI actually Hal?

In fact it didn't say quite that. It said that brambles were being cleared at this time of year, which doesn't actually mean it knew Kirsty was doing it at that moment.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/11/2024 17:21

RegimentalSturgeon
How many units are there at this poxy plug-in park anyway? I thought it was only three

And three is the number that Justin told Brad there were.

Lalgarh · 12/11/2024 19:18

Beavers in Ambridge? Since when?

Gonners · 12/11/2024 19:40

Well, there aren't any beavers there now ... there haven't been any since the Great Grundy Beaver Hunt of 1693. It was led by Zechariah Grundy and his wife Abigail was in charge of feeding the huntsmen. They were the Brian and JennyDarling of their day.

DeanElderberry · 12/11/2024 19:46

How much money for beavers?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/11/2024 19:52

Have not yet listened. Is this something Kirsty and Rex want to do? They'll need a fair amount of space and strong fencing round it. I think I regaled the thread with an account of walking through a park in Ealing where beavers have been reintroduced. We didn't see any, but I was pleased to know that they were about.

What are the beavers expected to do in 5 years time when the lease runs out?

As I’ve said before, rewilding doesn’t make any sense on-a five year lease.

Gonners · 12/11/2024 20:37

@MereDintofPandiculation - Would you like to be the person who told the beavers they had to move out?

Bruisername · 12/11/2024 20:44

Well I applaud the sw for their forward planning and I am willing to put up with Justin for another five years if the plan is death by homeless beaver

JanglyBeads · 12/11/2024 23:40

I was thinking 'The SWs are trolling us with all the "beaver" lines tonight!' and then Rex actually said re the sponsor a beaver idea, "Can you imagine the ads ...? "

BeatriceBatchelor · 13/11/2024 06:00

BOOP for the beaver banter.

£200,000 for the fencing? Wonder if New Justin will have a plan.

outofideas2 · 13/11/2024 09:13

Susan is making lovely comments to and about Neil.... I'm worried that this is setting us up for something bad 😟

Couldn't Brad put the fencing up for about 25 quid? He has plenty of time and seems to get employed regularly to do things he has no idea about!

Nettleteaser101 · 13/11/2024 12:37

I cant help thinking that if it was someone else's son/grandson instead of George , Susan would be slagging him and his family right off. Yes I did think the way she was talking about Neil that he might be heading for some illness as he was short of breath and dizzy even though Azra said it was down to stress, did she do a blood test?. Its always the way when someone says how nice someone is or how happy someone is in soap land the axe is going to fall.

That's actually a handy spin off @Gonners .

Ambridge 1650. Lord of the manor Obadiah Archer slings out tenant farmer Zachariah Grundy igniting a centuries long feud.

Christ even the continuity announcer just now noted in all the time the Archers has been on air there's never been so much chat about Beavers

Madcats · 13/11/2024 15:18

I'm so confused (not least because I originally misheard whilst boiling the kettle and thought Rex had been talking about "Bees")

Does the hitherto unnavigable Am now flow through the rewilding site? I don't think I've heard them mention a river or stream before.

Happy birthday, Peggy. I hope the Laurels had a little party for you. I bet our Queen remembered!

At least some of the rewilding site is half-way up Lakey Hill, so probably not. I am reasonably sure the first mention of any water there at all was during the IT rubbish last week which talked in passing about "wetlands", which until now they have never had.

tourdefrance · 13/11/2024 16:11

Maybe the local MP will pop into the Laurels to visit Peggy happy birthday?

What's the level of time lag between Ambridge and the real world? Is it likely to be her last voice appearance

MP or Peggy? (Grin)

Unless June Spencer had already recorded a last speech, that's not going to happen now. Peggy's last on-air utterance was on 31st July, 2022, and I think she might die almost at once having reached her century, off-stage.

Gonners · 13/11/2024 17:37

I vaguely remember when June Spencer retired she said something a bit ambiguous about having recorded her last appearance in the Archers. It wasn't clear (at least, not to me) whether it had been broadcast or not, so I'm hopeful that there will be a posthumous swansong.

Bruisername · 13/11/2024 19:15

bday mentioned!!

kirsty screwed over as always. Helen is so self centered. And she has made a lot of mistakes if the boys don’t like the 3 billy goats gruff. Best children’s story after the 3 little pigs.

brenda mentioned!!

amazed there is so much demand for willow cottage

Lalgarh · 13/11/2024 19:17

They just said tonight's episode was recorded before June Spencer died last Friday.

TottersBlanklyTopplesOver · 13/11/2024 19:18

BRENDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG - just the mention of her name has made my day - almost my entire week!

Oh, fabulous. Even if we never hear a word from her, I suddenly feel a SW cares about my feelings.

Million BOOPS.

And Happy Birthday Peggy! Flowers
