Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that your current highlight is the kitten naming, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

As I am posting this on Sunday morning at a point where some omnibus listeners won't have caught up with this week's events, I've kept the title less spoilerish than I might have done. Below this point, everything broadcast to date is of course fair game, so be warned!

Of course the main interest for most us at the moment is indeed the kitten naming competition. Isn't it? No?

Oh well, since you insist ...

How do we think George is going to cope now? Whither the Grundy and Horrobin clan? Will Lilian choke on her G&T (please)? Will Kenton get septicaemia from a kitten scratch? Will Alice die of sanctimoniousness? Will Fallon spend the rest of her life with the appalling Harrison and his unfulfulled longing for a behbeh? Will Adam and Will come to blows in the Bridge Farm packing shed?

Over to you!

I like him too. Of course he’s brattish, he’s a teenager! And clearly one that’s been uprooted recently, too, without being old enough to do much for himself.

I find him and his sister boring and unpleasant. I think they both have potential to be very boring and unpleasant.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 31/10/2024 07:33

Re Hilda: yes, probably we are in for a rehabilitation of Hilda (and Khalil too). And there was I thinking they were preparing us for a PSA on cat scratch fever. In fairness he seems a fairly credible character. His ability to chum up with Henry (was that Henry?) with such facility is rather sweet, if slightly unlikely. Henry being a brat would be entirely believable.

Burns Out looks as though it will be a bit slower than I hoped. And his boss being all considerate about his domestic pressures... How does she even know about the charging station? Perhaps cops are obliged to report any outside commercial interests in the family?

SW had better have Justin doing something (ambiguously) nice and unexpected to stop him being entirely 2-dimensional. When he volunteered in the village shop that was a bit too transparent - got to be a bit more subtle than that. People will still ask themselves what he's up to.

(My fantasy that he is going to try to spring a young relative from prison is obviously far too far-fetched, even for TA!)

I've lived in the southwest for over three decades and never heard anyone, including the Somerset branch of the family, say it. Must be those Bristolians.

More likely to be "my luvverrr" in Bristol, IME

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 31/10/2024 00:24

He and his sister have been rude and brattish every time they've spoken.

Not true, at least in relation to Khalil.

It's my luvvverrr here too, further west!

When was he not brattish?

By the way, we’ve moved

And another go at it, since the link bit is playing up

Could be a fostered cat. I like Khalil.

@echt , Fagash will probably die before JustanIdiot. A friend was boasting about the BNIL being likely to inherit park gates, and how the DSis was going to be minted. I hope the BNIL leaves it all to his DC. (the DSis a 'trophy' common-law wife)

Must be those Bristolians. Right you are my lover.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/10/2024 13:57

Is there such a thing as a common law wife in England/Wales, or does BNIL live under Scots law?

Lilian is not Justin's common law wife no matter how long she co-habits with him in the house he compelled her to sell to him (lord lord what a complete twerp the woman is).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/10/2024 14:06

Oh. I was told by a Scot that there now is after some recent bit of legislation (possibly in 2006 or 2007?), but she may have been talking up her position as a bidie-in.

AlanFranksDiary · 31/10/2024 14:07

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime , there definitely is such a thing as common-law wife. It's a wife in all but legal terms.

The 'it's just a piece of paper' mentality that means the woman might have lived as a man's wife, brought up his or their children etc but finds that it means jack-shit if he dies or dumps her.

It's not a legal term, but neither is fiance(e).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/10/2024 14:13

So "common law wife" means jack-shit in the way of benefits apart from the use of the bloke's body, with sfa security? Seems fairly futile to me; might as well stick with "bidie-in".

AlanFranksDiary · 31/10/2024 14:23

It's journalese for 'somebody living with a partner but not legally married to them'.
There are plans to give such partners some rights, and the law might be different in Scotland.

I'm being very mean about my friend's sister, but they are 'I am considerably richer than you' types pinning their hopes on inheritances, and think that dripping with designer labels means that they are better than us. (it's not really a friend just someone in my circle)

AlanFranksDiary · 01/11/2024 14:09

I don't want to hear a broken-hearted Lilian whining endlessly to Jerlene about how cruel JustanIdiot has been to her.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/11/2024 14:20

The plans will face strong opposition if anything ever comes of this. A great many people who have been married once and have children from that marriage want to be certain that all their assets will go to the children, not to a second partner they have chosen not to marry for precisely this reason. Marriage should always be something people choose to do, not something they find has been done to them. It would help if people had a better understanding of what marriage is - a legal contract, not an excuse for an expensive party and a posh frock.
