Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that your current highlight is the kitten naming, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

As I am posting this on Sunday morning at a point where some omnibus listeners won't have caught up with this week's events, I've kept the title less spoilerish than I might have done. Below this point, everything broadcast to date is of course fair game, so be warned!

Of course the main interest for most us at the moment is indeed the kitten naming competition. Isn't it? No?

Oh well, since you insist ...

How do we think George is going to cope now? Whither the Grundy and Horrobin clan? Will Lilian choke on her G&T (please)? Will Kenton get septicaemia from a kitten scratch? Will Alice die of sanctimoniousness? Will Fallon spend the rest of her life with the appalling Harrison and his unfulfulled longing for a behbeh? Will Adam and Will come to blows in the Bridge Farm packing shed?

Over to you!

It doesn't help that I don't like pastry. Vegan sausages are not great either. Glaze is like baked snot.
Which has made me think of what goes into pork pies.

Lalgarh · 30/10/2024 19:17

It can never recreate the succulence.

Hilda the cat 😺 is evil 🙈 😠, is she??

Yes this is massive for the farming community so should definitely get a mention at some point

How massive? There’s a £1m tax free allowance, and they were suggesting it wouldn’t affect the majority of small farms.

re Justin - what is the point of “rewilding” an area for 5 years? Comes from the same mindset that thinks an acre of ancient forest can be substituted for by a couple of acres of whips.

stilldumdedumming · 30/10/2024 18:48

@AlanFranksDiary take that back! My dp used to make excellent ones. You need decent sausages and pastry. But then it's all in the glaze. They were delicious.

But weren’t we talking specifically about Greggs vegan rolls?

AlanFranksDiary · 30/10/2024 20:03

I think I've had a Greggs mac'n'cheese pie. Never again!

stilldumdedumming · 30/10/2024 21:05

@MereDintofPandiculation ahh I had missed that. I've not had one. Flaccid is the word that comes to mind.

@AlanFranksDiary the glaze is often marmalade based. But yes, pastry is involved so maybe sit this one out!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 30/10/2024 21:06

I'd take a Greggs sausage roll over tonight's drivel.

Oh and Azra and her horrible son can bog off with that talk about getting a "trial cat"

The loss of 100% APR (agricultural property relief) is potentially disastrous. You don't need a great deal of land to be worth £1 million. Farmers tend to be asset rich, cash poor. This could mean farms being sold to pay IHT.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/10/2024 21:16

I wonder if Khalil’s desire for chickens will bring him into Josh’s orbit? After all, he’s already got an “in” at Brookfield after he ended up with cake at Jill’s birthday.

Justin is such an odious little twerp. I hope Rex feeds him to the pigs.

Fink · 30/10/2024 21:19

Not offended in the slightest @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g Fast Show's Competitive Dad is a documentary about my ex-h as far as I'm concerned (just like Keeping Up Appearances is a documentary about his parents).

@Godesstobe https://thearchersarchives.org.uk/today-is-the-day/ backs me up in thinking that it was Justin who called it off. I would be interested to see the actual transcript/hear the recording. My memory is that he said he loved her too much to marry her but it's possible he also somehow convinced her that it was a joint decision. I could be wrong on that.

It was definitely Justin who called it off at the last minute when all the guests were there. I think Fagash then (pretended) to go along with it to save face.

Yes, and doesn't Justin now own the Dower House so if they split up Lillian would have to leave?

Yep. But it's ok because she's obviously protected by being a common law wife, as everyone knows. 😤 That whole thing was another piece of weirdness as well - he bought the house from her because he couldn't stand the thought of Matt Crawford being a trustee of the house he was living in, IIRC. They might as well have just had a competition to see who had the bigger penis.

echt · 30/10/2024 21:57

Which has made me think of what goes into pork pies

My first holiday job in 1970 was in a pork products factory, a very small place, but prosperous enough to have its own shop in the town. It still exists.

Most of my work was making pork pies and I saw what went into them: proper cuts of pork, not weird bits and scraps, salt, pepper, some water and cereal. I was not a fan of pork pies but looking back can see how very good they were; simple ingredients.

In case you wondered, the weird bits went into jellied brawn, e.g. the big muscle behind the eye.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/10/2024 21:58

They might as well have just had a competition to see who had the bigger penis.

For inadequate men like the Justin Elliotts of this world, everything is a dick swinging contest.

I hope not. Azra and her family are awful. I wouldn't inflict them on any animal.

That ridiculous ' my darling ' nonsense on last night's episode literally had me muting the radio. So lame , makes me shudder.

Midlands bred people don't use that term in any case. It's much more of a West Country thing, especially the way Jolene says it (ad nauseum) my darrrr-lin! 😫

Why do you say Khalil is horrible? He's not asking for a trial cat, after all. he wants animals long term.

I've lived in the southwest for over three decades and never heard anyone, including the Somerset branch of the family, say it. Must be those Bristolians.

I like him too. Of course he’s brattish, he’s a teenager! And clearly one that’s been uprooted recently, too, without being old enough to do much for himself.
