Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you wish we were hearing more of Pip, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

I chose the thread title to echo one I used three years ago, which is here if anyone fancies a trip down Memory Lane: www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4320618--Archers-thread-130-The-Fall-of-the-House-of-Aldridge-Discuss-The-Archers-here. That was the thread where I caused all sorts of confusion at the start by not starting it before the old thread filled up, but others stepped in, fortunately.

At that point I see Ruairi was heading off to London to start his degree, which he has now finished, with none of us any the wiser about what he studied or where. Perhaps this will finally be mentioned now he's graduating.

And now, over to you!

Did we know Bert Horrobin was in a wheelchair, by the way?

He was in a wheelchair when he was the Mystery Model for the Recycled Fashion show. Synopsis for Friday 2nd February, 2024
https://ambridgereporter.org.uk/synopses/2024.html#February
and search on "wheelchair".

Kenton is deeply irritating. So who knocked the table over?

sunflower sl 🙄

Eddie was reasonable in asking usha for advice - and she was reasonable for saying she didn’t want to represent George

Gonners · 22/09/2024 19:25

And George was lucky, really. I mean, I don't know what Usha's "specialist subject" is when it comes to the lawyering (NB: I resisted saying "soliciting" there) but it's not likely to be criminal law.

Her advice to Eddie was good: leave it to someone who knows what they're doing.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/09/2024 17:34

there is so much the lawyer could use for George but I suspect a dysfunctional childhood counts against you when you are working class (and for you when you are a higher class)

Not necessarily - a friend had an awful family background (involving the traumatic death of a parent) and it counted for nothing, despite him coming from an otherwise stable and solidly middle class family.

But George hasn't had a particularly dysfunctional childhood.

He has divorced but devoted parents, his father is as involved as his mother; he has a full set of devoted grandparents and a stepfather who treats him as well as he does his own children.

Bruisername · 22/09/2024 19:29

his parentage has clearly caused him some pain and bullying. His stepmother died traumatically and his dad was suicidal.

I guess the sw think lawyers can advise on all areas of law and azra will be able to perform emergency brain surgery

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/09/2024 19:29

Non criminal solicitor in a different jurisdiction. I think the judge will lay it on thick that perverting the course of justice is a very serious offence because it strikes at the foundations of the rule of law but as he is a first offender and he confessed- 2 years suspended sentence.

Gonners · 22/09/2024 19:41

Yes, @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle - a suspended sentence would make sense. So presumably that won't happen!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2024 19:54

It's funny how George adored Nic until he could score a point by claiming (after her death, when she wasn't around to dispute his version of events) that he never liked her and she mistreated him.

He avoided having anything to do with Will feeling suicidal over Nic's death by claiming he couldn't bear to live at Greenwood Cottage when she was no longer there, and cleaving strongly to Clarrie and to Emma'n'Ed and hardly visiting his father at all.

He really is allowed to have his history all ways, isn't he. I didn't for an instant believe his sob-story (produced as a weapon against his father and mother) that he was bullied at school because his mother's new husband was his uncle. Like kids care about that sort of stuff! Also, if he had been being bullied at school one of his four devoted parents would have noticed, Ed if none of the others: Ed was always watching very carefully for any opportunity to blame Will about anything to do with George that he possibly could, and wouldn't have missed George being unhappy about going to school.

Bruisername · 22/09/2024 19:55

How old was George when nic died?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2024 20:22

George was born on 7th April, 2005, and Nic died on 23rd February, 2018.

Gonners · 22/09/2024 20:28

So, to be fair (much as that goes against the grain where George is concerned), he was only 12 years old.

Bruisername · 22/09/2024 20:40

Yes I feel a bit uncomfortable painting George as Damian. He was a child

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2024 20:46

George deserted his father as comprehensively as Jake, one year his senior, did, and George did it first. He was not once mentioned as having been at Greenwood Cottage during the entire time Will was still living there after Nic's death.

Thus he was not there during the time Will was suicidal; he was consistently elsewhere. And his reason for being elsewhere was said to be that he couldn't bear to be in the place where Nic no longer was. This in spite of the fact that he later said she had always treated him badly and he disliked her. Not very consistent in his inventions, I feel.

Bruisername · 22/09/2024 20:51

Or inconsistent sw

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2024 21:25

Or just different ones. Thaat's the trouble with TA these days: I can never forget that it's written by a dozen or so different people, and that means I can never forget that it is written rather than happening .

Bruisername · 22/09/2024 21:32

Yes - very true

WagnersFourthSymphony · 22/09/2024 21:41

Yes, there's always the question of did the sw mean that or is it just bad continuity?

BeatriceBatchelor · 23/09/2024 01:15

God that episode was dire.

Devilsadvocat · 23/09/2024 06:46

Who would steal a childs giant Sunflower, who would knock a table full of lovely pies over, its just a ridiculous story line and now we have Lynda turning into new Robert. Will she be Dr Watson to his Holmes? Will they get to the bottom of pie gate? Will they find Jazzers dabs all over the sunflower stalk? Oh its sooooo exciting. David is like a big spoilt baby Im not surprised he isnt well liked on here.
Eddie made me laugh saying they would put some money together to get a new solicitor for George, where would he get the money? He hasnt got two pennies to rub together or so he aways implies.

iratepirate · 23/09/2024 06:48

Kenton and David’s exchange was absolutely pathetic around the pies, wasn’t it.

BeatriceBatchelor · 23/09/2024 06:58

I think I'm the only one on here who likes Dave. He's well acted - I can actually believe he is a farmer. He has integrity.

Bruisername · 23/09/2024 07:15

I thought it was Kenton being a big baby calling up his Mummy and demanding she withdraw her yummy pie

I thought so too. It was David who turned up with Jill's pie.

LillianGish · 23/09/2024 08:16

I too like David. The Flower and Produce show has been overdone to the point of tedium - I liked the idea of a last minute entry from Jill (who has now become a silent character), but the cheese and apple build-up was over-baked by the SWs. The tallest sunflower shenanigans is just not credible - the idea that you can dig up such a specimen and transport it does not hold water for me. This photo is from a random google of local paper reports.
