Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you wish we were hearing more of Pip, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

I chose the thread title to echo one I used three years ago, which is here if anyone fancies a trip down Memory Lane: www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4320618--Archers-thread-130-The-Fall-of-the-House-of-Aldridge-Discuss-The-Archers-here. That was the thread where I caused all sorts of confusion at the start by not starting it before the old thread filled up, but others stepped in, fortunately.

At that point I see Ruairi was heading off to London to start his degree, which he has now finished, with none of us any the wiser about what he studied or where. Perhaps this will finally be mentioned now he's graduating.

And now, over to you!

I too didnt realise how popular the tea room was with people queuing outside to taste Fallons wears, where did they all come from? If I were Fallon , because of the way Tom and Natasha had treated her I would have told them that I could not run the tea shop on my own and will be closing early.
Just knew Jazzers sunflower plan would collapse.
Ians boring talking about the school but I expect he is just excited. My DH didnt tell me a thing about school either, it funny they must think 'well you chucked me out to go to school so Im not telling you anything'.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 19/09/2024 15:30

Is it just me who can't imagine why an apple and cheese pie is a thing?

I've never had it but it sounds delicious!

EBearhug · 19/09/2024 16:02

So it shoukd. Tallest sunflower/biggest sunflower head should be one you grew, not one you found on a neighbouring farm.

Can't remember if it was just discussed here of actually happened on the radio, but did fallen negotiate performance linked pay in her contract? ...

and we know she has a contract so surely she atleast would have a notoce period, also could there be a non-compete clause In there she's forgetting about?

DeanElderberry · 19/09/2024 16:30

Apple pie with a wodge of cheese is one of life's pleasures, but I don't see that losing the bland shortness of regular pastry and the chewiness of proper cheese in exchange for - what, something like cheese straws? would be an advantage.

Though if someone wanted to make some with spelt or with gluten-free flour I might be so gracious as to do a taste and review.

HotCrossBunplease · 19/09/2024 16:44

The idea of having cheese inside an apple pie is disgusting.

I thought that Ian’s “well, the obvious tip would be to bake it on the bottom rack” was straight from a script which contained the line [insert something a chef might say here] and they just made some nonsense up.

DeanElderberry · 19/09/2024 16:53

Cheese inside an apple pie would be a bit like a pizza calzone wouldn't it? Except with each ingredient changed into something less harmonious.

DeanElderberry · 19/09/2024 16:54

Or a Cornish pasty.

HotCrossBunplease · 19/09/2024 16:55

Apple pies are, to my mind, large round things in a dish from which you cut slices, what you are describing is more of an apple turnover.

KeepBritainTidy · 19/09/2024 16:57

Calzone is short for Calorie Zone. Also available from The World's First Gay Dad Pizza Van.

To my mind too, but in Ambridge, who knows?

Would cheese be nice with an apple and blackberry pie, or would in be better to stick with tradition and cream?

Bruisername · 19/09/2024 17:01

A slice of cheese with a slice of apple pie is one thing

putting it in the pie makes the cheese cooked and that totally changes it

Agreed. I can vaguely get behind the savoury cheese crust, but that is my limit.

Bruisername · 19/09/2024 17:09

I’m not a fan of blue cheese so tend to have apple with cheddar/gruyere type cheeses and I don’t think that would work in a pie - an apple pie

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/09/2024 17:22

Did Rob ever work in the shop?

The Farm Shop, but not the Village Shop, I think. Helen didn't work in the Village Shop so he didn't have to forbid her to endanger Their Child by going there and then take over so that she couldn't, which I think is what he did with the Farm Shop.

BinaryDot · 19/09/2024 18:06

I might cope with a very mature hard cheese in the very short crust pastry of an apple pie but it's already a compromise. And I say that as a Yorkshirewoman who wolfs down slices of Wensleydale with fruit cake.

TherapistInATabard · 19/09/2024 18:11

Did Helen have a shop/deli in Borchester/Felpersham or is that my imagination? I thought it was that that Rob put the kibosh on.

TherapistInATabard · 19/09/2024 18:12

Also, much as I love my Susan quote name, I think I might have to change it. What was that wonderful thing my beloved Maurice said about being a poet? That would be even more niche 😂

Borchester; it was called "Ambridge Organics" and Pat and Tony gave it to her for a twenty-first birthday present.

First Rob set out to get rid of that, and then, when he had succeeded, he took over her post in the shop opened to replace it at Bridge Farm because as a pregnant woman she made mistakes about ordering (which mistakes weren't hers but deliberate mis-ordering by him).

Rowan Williams became known as a poet after he stopped archbishopping...

Bruisername · 19/09/2024 18:30

I’m still confused about what Helen does. Are we not hearing about the shop because she’s running it?

Gonners · 19/09/2024 18:33

I think the shop fell into a plothole long ago.

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 19/09/2024 19:02

Maurice?

Maurice is taken! Angry

(Where’s he been? Ambridge is rubbish without him.)

Plothole! I love it

Oh, I also loved Maurice! So lugubrious Grin
