FILL THE OLD THREAD UP FIRST! https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4902507-archers-thread-154-cider-with-fat-rosie-meadow-rise-to-candleford-or-the-darling-horrobins-of-september-get-your-rural-saga-fix-discuss-the-archers-here?page=10

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to hear more scenes in the abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Lots of lively discussion about Brad's university aspirations and the Open Day on the last thread. Do you want him to end up at Felpersham or do you want him to spread his wings and go further afield? Where will Mia go?

Will this thread see the end of Rob, or do we have many weeks more before his long overdue demise?

What's going on at Grey Gables? Are they running into financial trouble? Will we hear from Roy, who I had forgotten was working there until he was mentioned the other day? Who are the mysterious 'Owners'? Will the locum GP turn out to be Adil's sister, as we have been surmising since she first spoke? Why's she been conjured up?

Talking of the GP, I'm hoping against hope we're not in for bad news about Jim's mole.

Praying that we're going to get a long and much-needed break from hearing P*p. Not praying that we hear Rob being christened. Who would be his sponsor, as someone commented on the last thread? Harrison? Surely that would be a conflict of interest. Can't see who else would do it locally.

I wonder how Ben is getting on now he's back on his nursing degree? Will we ever hear anything about Lily's course, or how Freddie's getting on at the abattoir?

So many questions! Over to you for some answers and boundless speculation.

I'd rather hear about Ambridge's sewage arrangements, or even repeat one of the most boring experiences of my life and sit through a long lecture on an accountancy topic, than hear more about Pip! I'd make an exception for this:

Oh Dayveed, how will we cope without having Pip and Rosie across the yard?

Come on, Ruth, Outer Mongolia isn't that far away! You can visit as often as you like ...

I never really understood the point of Guinea pigs, but from this thread I can see the appeal if they have little personalities once you get to know them! I love that some of you let them out in the garden - that’s very nice. My half Bengal cat would not allow such a possibility here…

I actually must say, I enjoyed George’s “have some lettuce!” line very much - I actually laughed out loud at the actor’s delivery. Very sweet. Although once again, no idea wtf his character arc is now supposed to be.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/10/2023 10:51

Our guinea pig had babies. They are born with a full coat of fur and teeth like tiny adults. They mature very quickly though and the males will start to try and mount their own mother so you have to re-home them as soon as they are weaned.

WitcheryDivine · 12/10/2023 10:54

Aw I've never seen the point of guinea pigs up to now but I'm really enjoying your stories! @Brefugee Mackenzie sounds like great company. 🐹(nearest I can find)

LillianGish · 12/10/2023 11:03

Many years ago I had a boyfriend whose family had had an entire dynasty of guinea pigs over the years (clearly no neutering going on). They had a huge run and hutch in the garden, but eventually the guineas moved under the shed (by choice) coming out to graze on the lawn in fine weather. By the time I was on the scene there was just one left - he was called Rover.

baby GPs are amazing - they are literally miniature GPs that just get bigger. I would have more at the drop of a hat but i am hideously, dangerously allergic to them.

Bruisername · 12/10/2023 11:31

our Guinea pig loved birthdays and Christmas as we would cram all the wrapping paper under the coffee table and he would spend hours doing Guinea pig stuff in there!

now the school hamster who I looked after one summer was a little shit!

Fink · 12/10/2023 11:41

Bruisername · 12/10/2023 10:03

You see Fink - we could have a whole episode based around the GPs!!!

Absolutely! As long as I don't have to hear them being mistreated.

It does worry me that Eddie was just able to go off to a mate with no planning and come back with a lone boar ready to be bonded. That sounds like pretty irresponsible breeding if nothing else.

Ambridge · 12/10/2023 11:59

The girl who lived next door when I was little, who was my frenemy (she liked to bully me when it pleased her) had two guinea pigs, and she told me I must never, ever stroke them between the eyes because that would make their eyes pop out and they would die and it would all be my fault.

In retrospect she had distinctly George-like traits.

Brefugee · 12/10/2023 11:59

we used to do a lot of shredding of documents and so on when i was in the army. We switched from rolls of paper with carbon paper inbetween them to paper with "inbuilt" carbon. One of the sergeants used to shred 2 big rolls of paper - removing the carbon layer - on a night shift and take it home to use instead of straw for the GPs he had. And he bitched and whined for ages after we switched because the inbuilt carbon made their feet black 😂

And the sows come into heat almost immediately after giving birth, so adult boars have to be kept away.

It would be very dangerous for Lola to get pregnant, so I hope the new boar really is neutered. They have to have their first litter before 7 months old or their pelvis doesn't widen properly and then they almost always die (unless a vet can do a caesarean).

Brefugee · 12/10/2023 12:00

Can someone give us a heads up when the whole GG fiasco is resolved one way or the other? I can't bear to listen

We use shredded paper from work too, because I have a lot of it. Many people's applications for baptism have ended up as my pigs' bedding, and then into the compost bin (see what I did there tying different TA stories together 🤓). They still need hay for eating and to nestle in, but we use paper as a middle layer.

Just in case you're concerned about GDPR, I do make extra sure it's shredded small enough to no longer be legible before the pigs get involved!

Alwaysdieting · 12/10/2023 13:01

I had a Guinea pig and her name was Rhoda the Rodent she was black and white and really small and cute.

RegimentalSturgeon · 12/10/2023 13:10

Guinea pigs are cute, but for real charm you can’t beat a capybara ❤

DeanElderberry · 12/10/2023 13:26

Those capybaras that live in hot springs in Japan have life all worked out.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/10/2023 13:28

""Capybara's citrus bath” will be held in the winter solstice. This is an arrangement of Japanese customs praying for disease-free suffocation."

???? Or possibly "eeeeeeek".

His previous arc would have had him harming animals so it’s all very confusing. But yes it was sweet. I guess he’s not irredeemable.

Isn’t that the beauty of the sl though? George isn’t evil - and Eddie approached his complaints in a practical way and consciously or not has encouraged him to take some responsibility for another living thing

RegimentalSturgeon · 12/10/2023 13:51

SQUEEEE! @Fink
Thank you.

AlanFranksDiary · 12/10/2023 13:51

Maybe it's to repel fleas.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/10/2023 14:07

https://www.iflscience.com/why-do-capybaras-take-yuzu-baths-66884

Relieves stress and helps them with skin problems, according to this.

I must say, this is a lot more fun than talking about The Archers at the moment!

Wasn't it George who took the Guinea Pig to Chelsea to get it's hair cut that time?
