True Crime - without the annoying bits

Can I have some suggestions for true crime pods that are just kind of straight to the point without irritations.

I'm mostly listening to Crime Junkie which I like in terms of length of story but I find it really annoying how they spend 20 minutes chatting about crap before they get into the stories. There's also a distracting hum in the background.

I tried They Walk Among Us but the guys voice is sooo annoying. Is it the same guy on all episodes?

Ideally I'd be more interested in hearing UK crimes but it's not the be all/end all.

I love the content of They Walk Among Us, but the way the guy puts emphasis on the wrong syllables is really annoying!

BBC sounds has some good crime and paranormal podcasts.

I recently enjoyed a podcast called Lost Hills, about crime in Malibu.

Do you like stuff about con artists? If so, try Who The Hell is Hamish, and My Sweet Bobby.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/02/2022 21:54

Crime analyst.
The unheard tapes Fred and Rose West.
Have you tried serial? And maybe s town. The post office scandal. Although thats about crime not being committed.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 10/02/2022 22:03

Totally agree about the guy on They Walk Among Us - as @EishetChayil said, it's annoying they way his emphasis is so often wrong - it's really jarring and spoils what are often good stories. I listen to a couple of podcasts but they still witter on a bit before getting to the meat. Morbid and Redhanded are two that spring to mind.

DixiePeach · 11/02/2022 22:31

I agree with you about his voice it’s so irritating. Have you tried uk true crime?

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 16/02/2022 13:15

Just discovered Crime Weekly - it's American. Great, really in depth coverage of cases and no annoying nonsense, though there are ads, which I just fast forward through. Two presenters, male and female, and they really dig deeply into the case being covered. Usually they have several episodes devoted to a particular case.

Whattheduck · 20/02/2022 22:47

The Missing is interesting it’s on every Friday.I listen on Spotify and there’s a few series on there to listen too.

hadwebutworldenoughandtime · 25/02/2022 18:21

I fond the ones with the least 'chat' are the more journalistic ones without presenters per se. Some i've really enjoyed have been:

10 Fold More Wicked
Casefile
Unravelled
Without warning
The storyteller
Two Face

And branching out a bit from murder type stuff:

Finding Q (audible)
Escaping NXIVM
Something Was Wrong
Verified
Uncover
Confronting Columbine

@DixiePeach

I agree with you about his voice it’s so irritating. Have you tried uk true crime?
Try speeding it up to X1.25 - I find it makes his voice much less annoying and dreary! Agreed about his weird emphasis on certain words.

It's such a shame as the content is great and well researched.

Murder with my husband
Bailey Sarian
Inhuman
Kendall Rae
Eleanor Neale (English)

DapperDame · 06/03/2022 22:30

The Detective is good. It's presented by an ex detective and looks into convictions that may be unsafe.

DoucheCanoe · 28/03/2022 10:59

Big Mad True Crime.

The intro is followed by "small talk sucks so let's get into it" - episodes are usually around 30 minutes.

I just skip ads/intros on other podcasts.

I’ve recently discovered Real Crime Profile which is presented by an ex FBI behaviouralist and an ex old Scotland Yard behaviouralist too. I also like True Crime Garage.

MissTruecrime · 09/04/2022 18:36

I ‘enjoyed’ Confronting Columbine but found it quite upsetting. I’ve listened to so many horrible crime stories but this one really got me.

Tinysarah1985 · 29/05/2022 14:59

I agree about they walk amoung us. I love the content but the guy speaks really slowly. I do enjoy the UK true crime weekly podcast. There is a bit of chatter at the start (about 5 minutes) and the episodes aren't really long

Leim · 02/06/2022 14:47

I agree with They Walk Among Us and how irritating his voice is lol

Nutellatea · 06/06/2022 22:15

The teachers pet is a really well presented podcast and one of the best I've listened to. It's an Australian crime but now 'current' after all these years.

I also second Casefile. Easy to listen to and to the point.

Would recommend Mens Rea- focuses on Irish crimes. A little closer to home than the others. And Dateline is good for quick stories!

vancoke · 11/06/2022 14:07

Morbid - my current favourite!

Childrenofthestones · 05/11/2022 19:54

+1 for 'UK True Crime' Put out weekly on a Tuesday.

krankykittykat · 11/12/2022 10:40

Black girl gone is a very good one

HeechulOppa · 29/12/2022 12:35

Minds of Madness
Unsolved Murders
Solved Murders

These all feel to me quite polished - kinda like the ones you see on tv with a deep, American accented voiceover. The latter two are quite diverse and cover a lot of cases from the 1800s too

LordEmsworth · 08/01/2023 08:33

Casefile is the absolute best true crime podcast. Absolutely no chat or diversions, everything is part of the story even if it turns out to be a red herring. Wide variety of case types, and supportive of victims.

CaveMum · 13/01/2023 23:47

Real Crime Profile” is excellent. As already mentioned it features an ex-FBI investigator, Jim Clemente, and also ex-Scotland Yard and domestic violence campaigner Laura Richards. They look at a wide range of crimes and take their time - they took 11 episodes to break down the Nicole Brown-Simpson murder and the case against OJ Simpson.

They cover some very high profile cases familiar to a British audience (Reeva Steenkamp, Madeleine McCann, Meredith Kercher) as well as big US cases, but they also delve into profiling and look at the cases against Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Michael Jackson, etc. They even did a behavioural breakdown of Prince Andrew’s car crash interview when they covered Jeffrey Epstein.

Laura Richards also has her own podcast called “Crime Analyst” where she looks at how cases are broken down and goes into what profilers are looking for in terms of motives, likely suspects, etc. She starts off with the Yorkshire Ripper case, though she’s at pains never to call him that or use his name if she can help it.

She’s very sensitive, always victim focussed - she likes to build background on the victim rather than glorify the criminal.

Neither is overtly gruesome or setting out to shock the listener, though inevitably there are some awful things talked about.

midsomermurderess · 20/01/2023 22:28

I like They Walk Among Us. It’s British and the host sticks very much to the point. Seeing Red is another British one I like. A but of guff at the start but generally well done. A two-handler, a man and a woman.

coolmum123 · 21/01/2023 09:39

I've been listening to Red-handed. It's done really well. They have done lots of different cases some that aren't high profile and the episodes are a nice length and we'll researched.
