Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think Phoebe is a genius, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

I put the BOOM! emoticon in the title as I thought it could transition into a vague likeness of a virus if we're still going by early May, when we expect some wild contortions from the production team to get Ambridge back in synch with the rest of the world. I think I would have preferred them to ignore it altogether but I suppose they couldn't.

Listened on the computer, the nail-varnish was very apt, Lynda would hate to have ugly feet on display.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 02/04/2020 19:44

Oh, pasdebeaucoupdegendarme, I'm so chuffed Grin

She's back!

I knew that outburst with Freddie would be a turning point.

leftshark · 02/04/2020 19:47

Thanks choccy - it only struck me today that their relationship seems so obvious but I hadn't heard them together since I've been listening (maybe 7 years properly but my grandma listened when I was little). I'll do some research.
I'm such a Lynda fan (I loved how she was with Lexi, for example) and also such a Kate fan, despite all their flaws, so I loved hearing them together.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/04/2020 20:20

Yes, when Kate was a teenager, she and Lynda collaborated on an environmental protest - perhaps to stop the Borchester Ring Road, or similar. Everyone else wanted the road and thought them foolish. Lynda's ref to Kate's teenage poetry will hail from around that time.

At that time, I found them both extremely annoying and very bad ambassadors for their cause.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/04/2020 20:36

MUM, I'm sorry, but "evidence" has been a verb since 1610, according to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (1933). The meaning "to attest; to bear witness to" dates from 1619; "To make evident, demonstrate or prove" from 1807.

CeciledeVolanges, thank you; that was what I was thinking but didn't know detail about.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/04/2020 20:38

Ed knew perfectly well that what he was doing was both illegal and dangerous; he only did it because Emma told him to.

Josh had no idea he had done anything illegal; that he went off on holiday without apparently having the least idea it was not a good time to do it surely demonstrates that?

lottiegarbanzo · 02/04/2020 20:41

Josh knew he'd been careless though. He believed the rules didn't apply to him. He was culpably negligent (in everyday, rather than legal, terms).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/04/2020 20:47

He lent a vehicle to a mate who said he was in a jam. Evil wicked man! Lock him up and throw away the key! Nobody ever speak to him again!

lottiegarbanzo · 02/04/2020 20:54

He hadn't kept up with essential paperwork, so couldn't prove ownership of a number of vehicles. That resulted in him being drawn into a police investgation. That shouldn't have happened.

I'm with Rex on the question of Josh's competence. He sounds like he's learnt from it. Let's see if that lasts.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/04/2020 20:59

He was accused of having knowingly bought one stolen trailer. He has not been charged, so we have to assume he was able to show that there was insufficient evidence that he had done so for it to be worth the while of the police to put this to the CPS to take to court.

And the police had complete access to all his files: they had confiscated his computer and phone,. So presumably what was on them was adequate to show that his transactions hadnot been criminal.

Hang him! (as in give a dog a bad name and)

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/04/2020 21:04

MUM Concise Oxford Dictionary 6th edn 1976: "evidence n&v.t. ...5 v.t. serve to indicate, attest".

So it's been a verb for quite some time, and doesn't mean quite the same as "to prove".

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/04/2020 21:10

Well, that'll teach me to read the whole thread before replying. Trouble is, it's such a faff to go back to the page you want to comment on to pick up anything you want to quote.

TemoraryUsername · 02/04/2020 21:15

Whilst I'm glad CV hasn't reached Borsetshire, anybody else feeling all clunky listening to it as a result?

And what are they about to do to Adam?!

leftshark · 02/04/2020 21:20

@lottiegarbanzo Oh absolutely - they are both so ridiculous and deserve all the eye rolling they get - but I still enjoy them as much as I enjoy the very boring characters and as I said was just so touched by their interaction. The fact there is some history there just made it lovely as opposed to a nice moment with no basis IYSWIM.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/04/2020 21:58

Oh yes, they were both on their best form today.

Over the years, I've grown to like, or at least respect and enjoy listening to, Lynda. I'm not completely sure whether she's mellowed or I have. Kate is still as exasperatingly self-absorbed as she ever was, to an almost unbelievable extent. It was good to hear her warm, appealing side for once.

TheSparklyPussycat · 02/04/2020 22:08

Choccy you were accidentally listening to Frankie Howerd, he was a good comedian in his own way, but rather an aquired taste.

JudyCoolibar · 02/04/2020 23:50

Evidence isn't a verb

It is, you know. First known example from 1622, from the Bishop of Salisbury:

The testimonie of neither of them..doth so euidence the matter, as the things themselues doe.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/04/2020 01:28

Interesting. As I said a page or so ago, the1933 SOD gives 1610 and 1619, not 1622. Where did you get the quote? (and before anyone worries, "quote" as a noun has been around since 1611 or so.)

LizziesTwin · 03/04/2020 06:04

Catching up with everyone. Poor Intern. Thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

UntamedWisteria · 03/04/2020 07:51

Have we heard from Philip/Gavin lately?

Oddly, although i am now never out when TA is on in the evening (my yoga/running club/social life on hold like the rest of the world, I seem to find it harder to listen than ever.

I think this is because I am now insisting my young adult DC participate fully in cooking the evening meal, which is when I usually have it on.

Chemenger · 03/04/2020 08:07

Intern - good morning everyone. I hope you all got my em......

SW1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (simultaneously- incomprehensible cacophony )

Intern- you will know that I have taken control of your microphones and I have muted them all. So while I am sure you are all still talking nobody can hear you. As I said in my email, if you want to speak just type an asterisk in the chat box , follow the instructions in the email to do that, then I will unmute you. Once you all get the hang of this we will try giving you control of your own mics.

Intern - thanks for the email, yes by “we” I do mean I. Unless any of you want to run the tech for these meetings?

Intern- thanks for the email, as I said I sent you an email yesterday with instructions, including a video and screenshots of how to work this “nonsense” as you call it. I can’t think of a way to get round the fact that you all only read important emails, sorry. Maybe one of you who is important could reforward the email to everyone else?

Intern - oh dear my WiFi seems.....(makes hissing noise)

Intern (offline) maybe tomorrow....

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/04/2020 08:48

The Intern is going to be Director General of the BBC by the time this is over! Grin

MikeUniformMike · 03/04/2020 09:24

So, I'll take your word for it. I'm in a better mood today and, going forward, plan to reach out etc.

It's just "Myself, myself, myself" with myself.

No TA till Sunday. [sniff]

Langsdestiny · 03/04/2020 09:36

I have just noticed they seemed to have stopped all the smutty jokes thank goodness.

nettie434 · 03/04/2020 10:03

I often listen to the repeat at 2pm Untamedwisteria. It’s quite a good way of having a break during the day. They were discussing on The Media Show the other day that there has been a huge upsurge in radio listening during this crisis. They quoted Fi Glover saying that she thinks it’s because people often listen on their own. A lot of people are cooking or clearing up on their own in the kitchen at 7 and it is the ideal background but would work less well listening with others.

In answer to your actual question, Gavin went round to Justin to ask if they could continue their work at Berrow Farm. Justin agreed. We are no further forward otherwise.

I do love the posts from the poor intern Chemenger. It is sheer exploitation to keep the poor thing working away. Not at the Phillip level obviously. I was tempted to put ‘obv’ but worried it might upset MUM
