Archers thread #114: Bull banished, Bali beaches beckon, bickering bullshitters burgeon

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Gavin to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all thread title suggestions! I've gone with a B theme which with a bit of luck will seem odd and irrelevant by the end of this thread. Here's hoping, anyway.

Haven't caught up with tonight's episode yet, so off to do that shortly.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/01/2020 12:17

(went and checked the episode: 10th June 2018)

Kirsty said Gavin was "early thirties" after meeting him with Philip for the meal the day before. So mid thirties at the oldest now.

Helen said, "So, what does he do, this Gavin?" and Kirsty replied, "Electrician. And future businessman."

CanYouSmellMyCharlie · 15/01/2020 14:47

When did TA become a farce?

This silly business of renaming The Bull just doesn't ring true.

And the wedding fair nonsense last night was certainly laughable, but for all the wrong reasons.

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 15/01/2020 15:29

I've just realised why it is that I keep getting mysterious alerts that people have summoned me with an @ over the last week or so, but then I can't find any of the corresponding posts.

Aeons ago I used 'Ambridge' as my NN for a while and then changed it - but now every time someone mentions the B @Ambridge I get a notification GrinGrin

In fact I've just sent one to myself Hmm

SurpriseSparDay · 15/01/2020 15:35

I wonder who eventually bought Ed and Emmur's house?

Don’t ...

Sad Sad Sad

I can hardly bear to think of it.

MikeUniformMike · 15/01/2020 16:01

The B @Ambridge is a silly name.
Hello 5000FlapjacksofJillArcher. Grin

DadDadDad · 15/01/2020 16:04

That's hilarious @5000FlapjacksofJillArcher . You can turn @ notifications off, but I'm guessing it's all or nothing for all your usernames, so that may not suit you.

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 15/01/2020 16:22

Did someone summon me? Grin

Yes, Dad, if I turn notifications off I won't get any at all for my (rather extensive) menu of usernames.

Let's hope they go back to The Bull sharpish.

PS congrats to mini-Dad

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/01/2020 16:30

I will try hard to remember only to call it the B at Ambridge, just for you, 5000FlapjacksofJillArcher. But I bet I forget. Sorry in advance.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/01/2020 16:30

Is @ Ambridge with a gap safe?

LillianGish · 15/01/2020 16:51

DDD, hope yr DS gets AAA (I really want him to be doing PPE so we can use some more letters IYSWIM)

DadDadDad · 15/01/2020 16:59

Not PPE, I'm afraid Lillian, which is a very hard course to get into it (from what I've heard of Phoebe I'm not convinced in real life she would have got in) - his world is one of ancient languages and theological arguments. If he were the TA intern, he would probably be dissecting Alan's (and Shula's) beliefs, and suggesting Jim recites Latin and Greek!

I think we will have to stick to calling it B@A, assuming there is no user called A?

KitchenFloor · 15/01/2020 17:55

I'm seeing a horrible story line where Kirsty gets accidentally pregnant, and Alastair finally tells Philip about the Gavin incident, which gives Philip a heart attack and he dies before changing his will. Gavin inherits the house and boots Kirsty out. (is it Philip's or is Kirsty on the deeds?!)

KitchenFloor · 15/01/2020 17:56

Also finding the bath in the en suite a bit odd, unless the house is only meant to be for a couple with occasional visitors. Kids need baths...

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/01/2020 17:56

but can you get wedding standard ones?....You certainly can!

Now that's a google search I never imagined I'd be doing. I even found one prominently labelled "Beaux" - would take much of a graffiti artist to change that to something suitable for the Archers.

StVincent · 15/01/2020 18:44

Hahaha is anyone else getting this advert in the middle of the thread?

Archers thread #114: Bull banished, Bali beaches beckon, bickering bullshitters burgeon
StVincent · 15/01/2020 18:47

I had the pleasure of visiting some “Mayfair” portaloos once at an event. They had wallpaper, classical music playing, even little pictures in frames, and some kind of perfumed air. Nicer than many places I’ve lived.

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 15/01/2020 19:19

Please don't worry on my account, I'm just deleting any ghost notifications - I'm only relieved to have worked out what's happening! (But a gap before the @ seems to do the trick Smile)

echt · 15/01/2020 20:31

I can see the capacity for the farm weddings to go wrong, with "animals on demand" being part of some couples' requirements.

Getting Shula's storyline ( much as I find her annoying) back in focus was done pretty well. Having Jim be the one speaking with her convinced, as he is large-minded, not one to bring his personal convictions about religion into the business of day-to-day, as well as an opportunity for him to rather elliptically speak his mind about his personal concerns to someone not Jazzer or Alistair.

Or will Shula speak to Alistair about this?

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/01/2020 20:43

I have solved 5000FlapjacksofJillArcher's dilemma

The hostelry formerly known as Archers shall henceforth be known as the 🦇Ambridge.

In other news, the 🔮 now thinks Phirsty will elope to Gretna Green.

theThreeofWeevils · 15/01/2020 20:55

I'm seeing a horrible story line where Kirsty gets accidentally pregnant, and Alastair finally tells Philip about the Gavin incident, which gives Philip a heart attack and he dies before changing his will. Gavin inherits the house and boots Kirsty out

The only thing I would take issue with there is your use of the word 'horrible', @KitchenFloor. That would be both fun and < socially responsible persona ON > educative about the importance of wills.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/01/2020 21:00

I like Philip Sad

They can't do that to Kirsty again (not spousal death, but cancelled wedding)

theThreeofWeevils · 15/01/2020 21:08

I don't see why not... It's just an extension of her only useful function, that of serial dumpee Grin

MikeUniformMike · 15/01/2020 21:31

I thought Kirsty was from the posh side of Wirral, but her Mum's a scouser.

MikeUniformMike · 15/01/2020 21:33

Aaargh. Soul Music. Soul destroying. Switching the radio off.
I love the song but I've already heard it and I don't want a whole half hour of wittering.

SurpriseSparDay · 15/01/2020 23:24

Kirsty enduring another cancelled wedding would be highly entertaining. Grin (As long as Gavin isn’t the cause. Angry)

But it does seem likely that she and Philip will run away and do it quietly somewhere, without Aunts One and Two.

(Not pleased with this portrayal of aunts as tedious encumbrances, btw.)
