Archers thread #114: Bull banished, Bali beaches beckon, bickering bullshitters burgeon

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2020 21:48

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Gavin to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all thread title suggestions! I've gone with a B theme which with a bit of luck will seem odd and irrelevant by the end of this thread. Here's hoping, anyway.

Haven't caught up with tonight's episode yet, so off to do that shortly.

Who were the last people to marry in St Stephens?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/01/2020 18:53

Also Alice and Christopher.

Getabloominmoveon · 21/01/2020 19:22

Long (30 years) term listener here, despairing at the aimless storylines and poor writing. My latest bugbear is ‘the likes of’, as in “the likes of Lynda Snell” this evening. Also used at least twice in the film. Sloppy.

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2020 19:40

Bracknell has had a recent makeover. I have only been to Waitrose there, so can't report an what the town is like since the makeover.

Basingstoke is near Jane Austen country and Bracknell is near Ascot and Windsor.

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2020 19:46

I think that the last couple married at St Steve's was Mianed.

The an in my pp should have been on.

CanYouSmellMyCharlie · 21/01/2020 19:55

Relationship advice from Helen?

Hmmm Confused

CanYouSmellMyCharlie · 21/01/2020 19:59

Where did Ian and Adam get wed?

echt · 21/01/2020 20:06

The whole Kirsty/Philip thing is annoying because no-one ever mentions financial security, even though Gav was at pains to call Kirsty a gold-digger.

R4 · 21/01/2020 20:17

Relationship advice from Helen?
Poor Kirsty. Relationship advice from Helen and Tom. Nobody deserves that!

Chemenger · 22/01/2020 07:44

I think Helen gave pretty good advice.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/01/2020 09:02

I think Helen gave pretty good advice

Yes me too. I'm now convinced it will be the first male-female Civil Partnership on TA. I can't see something like that being a missed opportunity for the Beeb.

Chemenger · 22/01/2020 09:07

I think they will just pop in to the Borchester Register office and get married with no fuss, with Helen and Joy as witnesses.

Chemenger · 22/01/2020 09:08

Then Gav will take offence because they will steal thunder from his Bali extravaganza.

Madcats · 22/01/2020 09:31

I'm hoping for a new fangled civil partnership thing with Roy and Helen as witnesses....with the possibility that they might not even tell anybody other than the tax office that they have done it........

Can anybody remember when the Bali wedding was planned for?

LillianGish · 22/01/2020 09:49

Yup - good advice from Helen - otherwise I'm really struggling to maintain my enthusiasm these days. I'm only posting here to keep this thread in threads I'm on. It's a sad day when I have to force myself to post Sad

CanYouSmellMyCharlie · 22/01/2020 12:05

Lilian said that Eddie was wanting to make a fast buck from the alternative Burns Night event, didn't she?

But how exactly?

I suppose there could be a charge for admission and food, but he can't sell alcohol, can he? Not even home-made cider.

And if he did, I'm sure Kenton, or even Lilian, would take great pleasure in reporting him.

Or am I wrong?

PawsAndReflection · 22/01/2020 14:39

Hi all! Long time listener but took a year off, any idea where I can get up to date with it all? I've listened to the last 3 omnibus episodes but still no idea who this Vince Casey chap is, among other things!

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/01/2020 15:28

any idea where I can get up to date with it all? I've been listening off and on since Mrs Dales' Diary bit the dust. In my experience it all makes sense in due course even if you've got year long chunks missing.

still no idea who this Vince Casey chap is I've been listening fairly continuously for the last 2-3 years but my first reaction is I don't know either! I think he's a Baddie agri-industry chap who bought up the local abbatoir (when everyone was hoping Justin would buy it to keep it open for the community). Whatever, he's definitely a Baddie. And not an Archer.

Motoko · 22/01/2020 15:54

Vince Casey owned a large abattoir and charged high prices, so the Ambridge farmers tended to avoid him, and used a smaller, more local one until it closed down and was sold to Vince. He's the replacement baddy for Matt/Tiger.

Madcats · 22/01/2020 16:06

Paws its a shame that The Lowfield isn't producing summaries still (though I appreciate it is a massive piece of work/admin).

I found this blog a while back that I tend to go to after I've been away and can't face the omnibuses:
haharchers.blogspot.com/

Vince Casey was introduced for no obvious reason than to make us hate him more than Joy/Hannah/Another newbie.

He lives near Brum and sounds a bit too much like Matt Crawford. He is supposed to be wealthy, having made his money in meat processing and abattoirs: "Casey Meats". He pops in and out of the programme like a pantomime villain.

His redeeming feature is that Justin Elliott hates him! He has flirted shamelessly with Lilian on several occasions. When the local (small) abattoir used by Brookfield and Hassett Hills went into administration he outbid Justin (who had wanted to redevelop the site, but omitted to mention this to David Archer).

To summarise, David hates Justin, and doesn't trust him an inch, but he hates Vince Casey marginally more.

They are, every day; they are posting them at www.paranormal.org.uk/mustardland/viewforum.php?f=1
(I hope that link works: if not, search for Peet's Mustardland and look in the Index for "Discuss the Archers". They get pinned at the top each day. You don't have to sign in.)

Unfortunately they are only up for a maximum of three weeks before they are deleted, because Peet's board has limited capacity and old posts have to go.

There are also BBC synopses at www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qpgr/episodes/player
but unfortunately the site is a cow to navigate, and I am not sure how you get to any of the synopses that are not on the three whole pages they let you have access to.

Madcats · 22/01/2020 18:33

Asking. Thank you! I've never spotted that sticky (will have to explore that forum in more detail!).

TheSparklyPussycat · 22/01/2020 19:38

Somewhat annoyed that Jim didnt go to the funeral after all.

R4 · 22/01/2020 21:49

Somewhat astonished that we have had two days (with more to come) in NotAmbridge.

Usingmyindoorvoice · 22/01/2020 22:20

I pop by here daily to check what I’ve ( not) been missing, saves me the aggro of shouting at the radio.
Imagine my surprise just now to realise I had actually heard tonight’s non event episode!
Back to non-listening, but reading these threads instead. So much more entertaining.
As you were!
