ONE HUNDRED NOT OUT – come here to mark The Archers’ threads, a MN phenomenon

First, a little bit of history. On 24 April 2013, user @PseudoBadger started a thread to discuss The Archers: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/1740045-Why-is-Lillian-allowing-this-to-happen?pg=1

It gained a life of its own and by August that year it was nearly full, so she started a second one. I notice that one of the early posts there, said “Pseudo - was that your most successful thread ever?” Oh, if only she had known what lay ahead. Grin The chain of threads continued, typically taking around a month to fill, although at times of the highest drama threads would move fast, which explains why around 6 years later, we are close to starting thread 100.

Most of those threads were started by Pseudo, although she has since passed the reigns on, and the self-organising collective of regular posters has managed not to drop the baton.

I said above that the rate at which threads filled up fluctuated as posters responded to dramatic events in Ambridge (Kirsty’s scream-wrenching abandonment on her wedding day was an early high point, but I’m sure you all know or can guess what storyline of the past few years sent the rate to stratospheric levels Shock ). This intrigued me enough to record the start date and number of posts for each thread in a spreadsheet, and so observe how the posting rate moved around.

That means I know that we have made between us over 95,000 posts in our discussion of The Archers. (We tend to move on before reaching the 1,000 limit). In a few months, we will reach 100,000 posts!

The 50,000th post came at an exciting time. It actually happened on 3 April 2016, the night a knife was wielded and blood (and custard) were spilt. We filled a thread in one day! And in the midst of the febrile posting, someone made post 50,000 - delightfully, it was Pseudo herself. Star See here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/2606356-50-ways-to-leave-your-lover-Get-on-the-bus-Gus-give-a-knife-to-your-wife-Rob-How-not-to-write-helpful-storylines-masterclass-from-The-Archers?pg=9 (post made at 22:08).

Around that time, the idea was floated of asking MNHQ for a new smiley that would reflect The Archers. Someone suitably statistically minded Wink collected the “votes” for various ideas, and MNHQ joined the discussion: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/2603454-Bunting-the-Bull-An-Eggmobile-Other-Ambridge-crime-scenes-Potential-emoticon

In the end, MNHQ gave us this --> Archers [ archers ] I’ve always taken it to represent the community spirit on this thread, much as The Bull is a focus of the community in Ambridge.

So, what should we do to celebrate thread 100 or 100,000 posts? Ask for another smiley? What would it be and what would it mean?
I know some have floated the idea of representing 'BOOP' which is a word users came up with (named after user BitOutOfPractice) to mean something that we wanted to praise about an Archers episode (as a counter to always being critical).

I wonder if we should just ask for a BADGER smiley, to remember our founder? Even just her unerring ability to think up witty thread titles over the years is surely reason enough to honour her. I’m open to what it could represent…

I still think a badger's head on a piece of bunting would be good Grin
PresidentOliviaMumsnet - hello, nice to see you again, we'll try not to spoil anything for you! What was it you wanted to pick the collective brain about for the Sheffield conference? Are you presenting a paper there (and if so, what's it about, please?) or going along for the badger bunting craic alone? If the latter (or even the former!), did you know there's a group called Academic Archers on FB?
Quoogle shows me you are probably presenting a paper on: "What to do when you’re no longer Borsetshire’s Business Person of the Year, or How to handle a scandal" - in which case, I'm sorry, I have no wisdom to give you, not being Brine. Grin I hope it all goes well!

Minimammoth · 05/03/2019 08:12

Ok got it. I thought the old thread was full and this the new one.
I like the badger emoji. By the way.
It would be a laugh if we did chat with actor and they chose Pip.

DadDadDad · 05/03/2019 09:35

OK, it sounds as if we can get a smiley (I'll use the word 'smiley' because that's what MN calls them at the bottom of the page), we want one to show 'over-infested', for posters to acknowledge when their own (or someone else's) posts have perhaps demonstrated a level of over-thinking a storyline verging on the unhinged unhealthy. Grin

I fear that trying to get a centipede on a triangle of bunting will be too detailed. Look at existing smileys:
Archers - simple outline of a bull's head, but still gets mistaken for radioactivity symbol etc
Brew - it's only obvious that's the MN logo on that mug and not a cannabis leaf Shock because of context.

So I think what's needed on the bunting is something very simple, eg an insect's head.

Overinfested seems to be the agreed theme. In view of the many, many mentions of badgers in The Archers over the years, David's conviction for killing one and the link to TB in cattle, I think a badger could serve as a symbol of infestation and has the additional merits of:

(a) being probably a lot easier to turn into an emoticon than a creepy crawly
(b) less likely to set phobic people off
(c) terrific tribute to @PseudoBadger.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/03/2019 09:50

I wouldn't be surprised if many badgers are themselves overinfested - all that thick fur.

Bittermints · 05/03/2019 09:52

Another excellent point, Errol! Not an issue with scales, I surmise. Grin

thislido · 05/03/2019 09:53

Yes, or a fly would probably fit.

Not ignoring the idea of badgers, as I said above at some point I don’t know when I’d use it - we have BOOP for good things. Unless the logic is that badgers infest things, but I thought the link was to pseudobadger.

‘Overinfested’ seems to be the main phrase we use that warrants a smiley. Not sure how you’d illustrate TASWAMA and personally not keen on calling them arseholes anyway.

thislido · 05/03/2019 09:54

Cross posted

thislido · 05/03/2019 10:07

Also the idea that badgers are an infestation is fairly contentious, if you look at the history and evidence around culling and alternatives.

DadDadDad · 05/03/2019 10:18

So two things to vote on:

A. Badger
or
B. Bug

Bunting:
Yes
or
No

So you can express your vote as one of: AY, AN, BY, BN.

I had a go showing what some of these might look like, but obviously someone with artistic skills and the proper software would produce something much better.

That's badger bunting Hmm

DadDadDad · 05/03/2019 10:20

Bug bunting

thislido · 05/03/2019 10:26

Sorry, you can’t use initials for one part of the code and random letters for the other, it’s too confusing!!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/03/2019 10:38

I'd go for bug bunting if it's doable.

SilentKarateMums · 05/03/2019 10:57

I like the blue bunting Grin

DadDadDad · 05/03/2019 11:03

Thanks, I think I have a good eye for colour, just lacking CAD capability. A baby blue seemed quite attractive to me. Nice contrast to the red Archers

Oh congratulations on the hundredth thread. I’m a lurker who falls by the wayside and then posts occasionally, but I’m an avid listener. I’ve just started maternity leave so I intend to comment more frequently!

FWIW, I like badger on bunting (not a euphemism).

DadDadDad · 05/03/2019 11:40

The hundredth thread hasn't happened yet, but it's coming in the next 24 hours! Keep an eye on the Radio Addicts board.

I'm a lurker on the main threads, badger bunting gets my vote please

DadDadDad · 05/03/2019 12:44

I think I'm erring more towards bug bunting, partly because in future it will be a bit easier to explain / justify to those new to the threads. As for honouring PseudoBadger: si monumentum requiris, circumspice.

BY, bug bunting. I like the fact that it's a bug face.
