Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title (again - she has real gift for this!). Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other odd unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

(Change counting references arose specifically out of a nostalgic discussion on the previous thread, if anyone is intrigued.)

Tom Wrigglesworth's dad, yes, he is. Paul Copley.

Good GOD! do they write the whole story on the basis if jobs for their friends and relations?

In the last few days we've had Alastair's new boss, the Judge(?) in Brian's case, now Leonard.

They can't all need to be voiced.

MargueritaPink · 07/02/2019 20:09

Like when the characters go on about their 'tablets' (said no one EVER)

Except all the people who don't have Apple products . I have a Samsung tablet.

DadDadDad · 07/02/2019 20:14

Tom Wrigglesworth's dad - instantly recognisable. He's comedy gold ("Tom who? Oh, I'll just put your mother on") - it's going to be hard to imagine him as Leonard. It's either that or "Morrison's makes it" from the ads.

echt · 07/02/2019 20:15

Is David jealous of his mother's interest in Leonard?

"Dapper", that's how they described him. Revolting word, a hint of being slightly too well dressed. Like "spry/sprightly", words reserved for the elderly, with a tone of faint surprise that any energy can be discerned in the chronologically-challenged.

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/02/2019 20:26

whether anyone in the world who is cutting something up in the kitchen hears the doorbell ring and doesn't put down the knife and give her hands a wipe before going and answering the door. I do if it's a choice between getting a parcel and getting a little card suggesting I can drive 20 miles the day after tomorrow to pick up the parcel from the depot.

DadDadDad · 07/02/2019 20:41

I didn't detect jealousy from David, just (as he himself expressed it) a complete lack of having anything in common with Leonard.

Did they slightly overdo the self-conscious teenager behaviour by a giddy Jill?

HatingTheBigShow · 07/02/2019 20:54

Ugh, David was so rude. And I realised it's possible to be annoyed by Pip when she's not even in an episode. I hope Jill gives them all the heave-ho and sets up with Leonard.

I would love to hear Alan broaching that topic with Jill. He wouldn't in a million years, of course, because that's not his churchmanship, but I can just imagine the elderly parish stalwart with a stricter vicar,

'Now, Jill, if I could have a word ... we hear you're living in sin with your fancy man ... set an example of the sanctity of marriage for our younger parishioners ... risk of scandal for the more impressionable ... the Church of England is an inclusive community, of course ...'

QuaterMiss · 07/02/2019 21:16

BOOP for the youthful hormones conversation. Bit heavy handed but it made me laugh.

TheSilveryPussycat · 07/02/2019 22:49

Re buses. From the depths of my memory I seem to recall the loss of a proper bus service, and its replacement with a post bus. I imagine that too will have stopped some time ago. Peggy will have got a lift, I think - we often hear of her daughters doing so, and she'll have friends to call on.

I thought Leonard's voice bore a resemblance to that of Phil.

ChakiraChakra · 08/02/2019 01:43

So has Kirsty or anybody told Hannah she is Tom's jilted ex?

Excellent observation. So true. Am Envy I didn't think of it myself.

QuaterMiss · 08/02/2019 06:12

I have an editing complaint.

Yesterday the SW had Toby say of Pip that he was "back in her bed". Why? The phrase has a very specific meaning - and is the opposite of the situation they had set up for us: that Toby was staying at Rickyard for parenting purposes, but is not having a relationship with Pip.

Have I misunderstood?

MargueritaPink · 08/02/2019 07:20

So true !

SaturdayNext · 08/02/2019 07:25

If Pip is really ready to leap into bed with someone just because they clean her house, she has very low standards.

ChakiraChakra · 08/02/2019 08:02

Rickyard only has the one bed. Last time Tobey was regularly staying there he was in the bed on the premis that it was strictly for sleeping. He had been on the sofa but complained it was too uncomfortable.

ChakiraChakra · 08/02/2019 08:07

My money's on Pip shouting at Tobey tonight who has "misunderstood" what back in her bed means to her Hmm

R4 · 08/02/2019 08:09

Have I misunderstood?
I don't think so. Presumably Toby enjoyed having his jollys and would like some more. Added to which the delightful Bert wasn't being very delightful so Toby wants to quit The Bungalow. He thinks it's a win/win.

Yes, I recall all that Chakira - which is why I can't understand why the editor allowed a phrase which, while factually correct, carries a different meaning.

ChakiraChakra · 08/02/2019 08:45

@QuaterMiss this IS Tobey Fairbrother we are talking about... of course he's going to either presume or imply that it's for more than just rest ;) especially to poor old Rex, whose candle seems to be burning brighter than ever for Pip. Tobey won't have noticed that, or maybe he's subconsciously realised and is trying to put Rex back in his box. I think the editorial choice is totally in keeping with the character.

LillianGish · 08/02/2019 09:19

Just caught up, I thought last night's episode was very Last Tango in Halifax.
