Sorry about the title, nothing particularly inspiring in the storylines currently Sad

No spoilers please, there’s a thread for that.

Ruairi would definitely feel a bit cramped at Blossom Hill Cottage ...

In fact, he might decide to skip A’ levels and follow Freddie and Noli on their Grand Tour.

LillianGish · 15/07/2018 16:34

They aren't going to sell the house are they? Surely they won't sacrifice the house to protect some yurts which were only put up to give Kate something to do until she loses interest and flits off to her next project - she can't sustain interest in her own children for more than few months for goodness sake. It's too silly - why is no one saying this?

Gruach · 15/07/2018 16:37

No need to fret yet Lil’G! Ambridge Twitter is saying what we said months ago:

Northumberland.

R4 · 15/07/2018 16:40

Are Brian & Jenny going to get one of Justin's new-builds? (which overlook Bridge Farm, so that should provide some funGrin )

Or The Stables might be going free soon.

Gruach · 15/07/2018 16:42

They could be taken into the Dower House ...

LillianGish · 15/07/2018 16:46

That made me laugh Gruach - it reminds me of a line from the Yeoman of the Guard: "Some word that teems with hidden meaning, like "Basingstoke"". Could easily substitute Northumberland.

Scoopofchaff · 15/07/2018 16:46

Agree with LilianGish that any sane business partnership would vote to pay Kate compensation for her to move her retreat elsewhere. Her business is the only one that is moveable; the rest - being farmland - is not. To give up your home (the centre of the family) for someone as selfish and impulsive as Kate makes no sense at all!

LillianGish · 15/07/2018 16:49

Her business is the only one that is moveable That's it in a nutshell (a cobnut-shell).

5000FingersofDrT · 15/07/2018 16:52

Yes, Lillian, it somehow seems entirely typical of Kate that she chooses to dig her heels in over the one thing that could well result in the Fall of the House of Aldridge, and stick to it stubbornly because it's what she wants, no matter the impact on the lives of several of her nearest, if not dearest, family.

That's not to say I agree with the way Brian's spoken to her recently, but historically she's been an over-indulged brat who's mainly concerned with herself.

Scoopofchaff · 15/07/2018 16:54

Having said all that Jenny has come out of this very well and not the shallow character she was portrayed to be over the new kitchen installation episode.

And I was quite relieved when Jenny managed to track down Brian before the meeting. It crossed my mind that he might have gone and done some harm to himself so that the rest of the family could benefit from his life insurance or some such (although not sure if insurance pays out in the event of suicide).

ADarkandStormyKnight · 15/07/2018 17:14

What's the story with Arkwright Hall?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/07/2018 18:10

It belongs to the Landmark Trust, which implies it's used for holiday lets. Long ago I believe it had a youth club. It hasn't been mentioned for yonks now.

LassWiADelicateAir · 15/07/2018 19:53

They aren't going to sell the house are they?

It would not make sense to leave a farm the size of Home Farm without an appropriate farm house.

LillianGish · 15/07/2018 19:54

Even Kate doesn't believe it will happen.

LassWiADelicateAir · 15/07/2018 19:58

I'm listening on catch up- they are all awful.

There’s a Tom - third generation of a farming family - extolling the virtues of cobnut pesto on R4 right now

Oh goodness that sounds perfect for Bridge Farm.

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2018 20:04

I think Ruairi is a poppet.

LassWiADelicateAir · 15/07/2018 20:04

(although not sure if insurance pays out in the event of suicide)

Depends on the policy. There will be an exclusion within a certain period of taking the policy out (usually- 24 months) or possibly if the policy holder had not disclosed certain mental health problems but otherwise it will pay out.

Scoopofchaff · 15/07/2018 20:26

That's useful to know LassWiADelicateAir although I hope it isn't relevant in this scenario, as despite all his (many!) faults, I rather like Brian as a character.

MissVanjie · 15/07/2018 22:08

“t reminds me of a line from the Yeoman of the Guard: "Some word that teems with hidden meaning, like "Basingstoke""

Ahem. That was Ruddigore

MissVanjie · 15/07/2018 22:10

.... and also WAAAH DRAGONFLY!! You are lovely. Have i met you in hebden bridge while preggo?

EBearhug · 16/07/2018 01:10

There is hidden meaning in Basingstoke? I have obviously missed that. Probably buried under a roundabout. Must take a look I'm the morning.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/07/2018 07:56

Hi MissVanje, not me in Hebden Bridge, I'm afraid! I never went to any of the big meetups.

More Debbie this week. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

fontofnoknowledge · 16/07/2018 08:06

I'm one of this boards many lurkers forced out from under my rock because I need to pick the brains of all you Ambridge gurus. Despite listening since 1964 - I must have missed some episodes over the last few weeks due to family illness and also missed the omnibus because I cannot for the life of me understand the current Home Farm storyline.

Have I got this right ?
Kate - the spoilt and indulged daughter of B&J returns from S. Africa , having abandoned her children after being dumped by her husband for having an affair.

With nothing to do and notoriously flakey , she finally sets up a 'health retreat' on some land her parents give her ? . They also give her the capital to set it up - along with her elder sister who 'invests' in the business.

This business is in its infancy (2 yrs ?) it is doing very poorly at the moment due to the issues of land contamination. 'Bookings' are virtually non existent .

This business is based on a family farm with a large family farmhouse where this daughter lives with the parents who gave her the money and land to set up the business. (The same parents who until recently- still gave her an allowance!. ) All paid for by the business in which her 'retreat' sits.
Her father allowed the land to be contaminated 40 yes ago. This will probably result in a very large fine. Too big to pay from the business. The best solution is to sell some land.
Because the land the father wants to sell abuts the - (one can assume - as yet unprofitable or very low income) retreat - and would damage the said business . the spoilt brat has threatened to sue the hand that has fed and indulged her for 40 yrs. !
To add to the incredulity. The rest of the family AND Ruth Archer as minor child's attorney.. all think that selling the family home that houses the Brats parents, brats child and the minor child - should be sold as a preference to 'upsetting ' the fledgling business of the Brat. With all but Brian and Alice finding this the 'right thing to do'.

What have I missed that makes this storyline believable. ? How many children would want their incredibly generous parents chucked out of their home , that their mother has cherished for 40 years, so that their flaky sister is not upset. ?
Why would you WANT to run a retreat on land that has surely been irretrievably damaged by the links to land contamination. Why wouldn't you take the compensation offered and the opportunity to physically remove that association with your business ?
Where will your daughter live once her home is sold.
Why would your half brother and sister take your side against your ageing parents - knowing as they do, that the chances of you sticking with your 'project' are ridiculously slim.
The entire storyline makes no business sense, economic sense or moral sense.

Have I missed some essential key episode that explains why Kate holds all this power over everything?

Gruach · 16/07/2018 08:16

Nope ...

Grin
ADarkandStormyKnight · 16/07/2018 08:29

Kate is morally in the wrong but has taken legal advice and she has a point, because of the way Brian set the partnership up.

Brian, imo, is at fault for setting up legal arrangements but assuming that the family will do what he says anyway. The way he spoke to Kate was indefensible.

I am hoping that the kids will find a way forward but it all seems to have gone a bit Brexit at Home Farm.
