Wow CUP, what a wonderful thing you are doing Flowers

Gruach · 07/02/2016 10:36

Actually - wouldn't it be wonderful (and from a scripting pov perfectly feasible) if we heard that, instead of lounging expensively in Tuscany, Caroline and Oliver had secretly been working feverishly in Lampedusa - putting their language and fostering skills to some use helping unattended child migrants?

Eventually returning with two or three potential new residents to be welcomed into some of the less than full Ambridge households. Peggy and Christine could give their attention to more than burnt scones. Shula might postpone her wanderlust and teach a traumatised child to ride. Frilly could adopt a new sibling ... The whole place could be revivified.

redshoeblueshoe · 07/02/2016 10:38

Grauch what an excellent idea

CuttedUpPear · 07/02/2016 10:49

Love that Gruach

fluffiphlox · 07/02/2016 11:01

cutted do you have another thread about your work at Calais?

CuttedUpPear · 07/02/2016 11:13

No Fluffi I was concerned that people would start arguing if I started a thread about it.

There is a little school in the Dunkirque camp. That's where I was helping the young Kurdish man with his English. There are 2 lovely long term volunteers there who I would like to support. If I can help raise funds for their accommodation there, they can continue their work. The cheapest accommodation nearby is about €17 per night.

Would any of you like me to post the fundraising link?

CuttedUpPear · 07/02/2016 11:18

We had great news yesterday at the little school - 2 teachers from the primary school in Dunkirque came down to offer their long term commitment. It's so good to get local support. The camp may be moving and the school will move to the new site as well.

fluffiphlox · 07/02/2016 11:21

Good idea. It would be entirely up to the individual then. I drove past the so-called Jungle last week. The CRS were in evidence. I have no answers. It's quite shocking , given that France is a civilised and rich country.

Dumdedumdedum · 07/02/2016 11:27

Yes, CUP, please do.

MeolsCop · 07/02/2016 11:36

Flowers to CUP and yes to the link.

Just LAd to the film, as I couldn't discern what happened first time round. I reckon H says 'Rob, you're - h -' (but doesn't get as far as saying the whole word, whatever it was going to be), and then has a convulsion/fit/collapse of some sort (hence the 'hwflpwnh' sounds).

Thinking back to her relationship with Greg the Grim Gamekeeper, iirc he was on a more or less permanent downer. I seem to have memories of H forever trying brightly to cheer him up/appease him, and him glowering and going around under an almost-visible cloud of gloom (and of course ultimately he killed himself). So actually I think she has been somewhat pre-conditioned to expect relationships to be full of difficulty and angst. Her time with Greg was definitely not a bed of roses either, although the appalling Knob is a million times worse, obviously.

I'd love to hear about Calais, CUP, and other ways people can help.

Paul Trueman's 'The Helen Titchener (nee Archer) Rescue Fund' for refuge has exceeded £36000

BYOSnowman · 07/02/2016 12:01

Maybe do a thread in radio addicts CUP called 'cutteds adventures in France' - it won't attract people with that title but you can link it from here so those interested can follow you

I think they have to be careful about including current affairs-ambridge has to be a bit of a bubble. Writing a carefully balanced sl with opinions from all sides that doesn't show a bias would be tough and make it a political football.

And as it is recorded ahead of time it would always be behind anyway

BYOSnowman · 07/02/2016 12:09

It says it has 30 kids presently - how many kids are in the camp?

Gruach · 07/02/2016 12:09

There is huge potential for charitable (if not political) campaigning through TA.

Warming to the theme - and starting with the youth -

With all the ethics lessons, sermons in chapel and emphasis on debating skills that Freddie and Lily must imbibe at the Cathedral School, it's astonishing that they're not badgering their mother to open up a couple of dozen LL bedrooms for needy people arriving in Borchester.

Phoebe ought to be incandescent with rage. Never mind the pressures of globalisation on a post-apartheid regime I'm amazed that she hasn't already gone - leaving all her relatives begging her to come back and forcing Jenny to hare off after her.

I appreciate that the perhaps more thought-enabled members of the community - Jim, Alistair, Usha, Alice - might feel too bound up with their own lives but Ed with all his international wandering and experience of desperate situations should surely be at least wondering what he could do?

BYOSnowman · 07/02/2016 12:20

I think Kate is actually the obvious one to want to go and volunteer. It fulfils her need to escape and her need to do something 'worthy' but also she has skills from her time in SA

GruntledOne · 07/02/2016 12:24

With luck Henwee will be looked after by Patbot, Kirsty will come round to ask about Helen, Henwee will tell her Daddy said Mummy was naughty not keeping her promise, and some facts will come out in Patbot's presence. Then Henwee will tell Knob he was naughty for lying about the treat, Knob will lose it in Patbot and Kirsty's presence, and things will get exciting.

Well, we can always hope.

Kpo58 · 07/02/2016 13:07

Assuming Helen & Rob break up (in the near future), what rights would Rob have over Henry as he did adopt him?

Gruach · 07/02/2016 13:17

He hasn't adopted him. He was scared off by the prospect of months of investigation into his background. So he went for Parental Responsibility instead.

I've been too lazy to seek out any case law on PR where the child has no known father. Generally it's hard to lose if you had it automatically (though I have once seen a judge refuse to grant it retrospectively.) But it's a knotty question.

Stickerrocks · 07/02/2016 13:26

Cutted A former head teacher with an obsession with school uniform is volunteering with school age children in the Calais camps. Have you come across him?

Back to Knob. Henry isn't allowed to have time alone with Pat & Tony anymore, so it's going to be hard for him to squeal. Did anyone else notice how Rob wouldn't let Tony take Helen into Borchester on Wednesday? Despite working (until tonight) in the family business, Helen & Henry are never allowed to see their family without Rob being there.

Dumdedumdedum · 07/02/2016 13:36

Am I allowed to post a spoiler for one of next week's episodes here?

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 07/02/2016 13:39

No! No spoilers. There is a separate thread.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/02/2016 13:40

Best not Dumdedum

Olivia will give you

We have a separate spoiler thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/2237899-Archers-spoilers

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 07/02/2016 13:47

PR it was possible to gave the rights of the resident parent confirmed in a residency order before but I think those may have been discontinued. This effectively gave the RP the right to do things without consulting the other parent e.g. change schools, go abroad on holiday without written consent (yes this is required by law nowSad)

CuttedUpPear · 07/02/2016 13:50

Stickerocks yes I know about Rory but he is working in the other school across the camp, which is for the older kids. When the camp moves they will merge the 2 schools so all ages are catered for, they are looking forward to it.
