Do you know that I was 3 months pregnant when the first thread started - DD was 2 yesterday Cake

That must also mean that Poppy Grundy's 2nd birthday has passed by unremarked upon...

Right. That's it.

If Phoebe goes to Felpersham University I will STOP listening. What on earth is the damn nonsense with the suddenly awful boyfriend?

Angry Angry Angry
capercaillie · 11/10/2015 19:16

Poor Phoebe...so want her to tell the boyfriend where to go, get that application in and get in to Oxford!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2015 19:17

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dump him, Phoebe! He's just shown you he's not worthy of you. Angry

selsigfach · 11/10/2015 19:17

He's even worse than Knob! Kick him into the long grass, Phoebe.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2015 19:19

The only good thing about that scene is it's so obviously a precursor to somebody sensible (ie not Kate) sitting down with Phoebe and correcting all that rubbish just in time for her to go ahead with the application. Very hard to see who it could be, though - Brian? What does he know about Oxford? Jennifer - ditto. Jim?

Gruach · 11/10/2015 19:21

Who's going to be the wise owl who sets her on the right path?

Kate? Alice? Roy?

Really it's a job for Auntie Brenda ...

GruntledOne · 11/10/2015 19:58

Surely it's got to be Hayley? Or maybe Moike?

BYOSnowman · 11/10/2015 20:02

what really concerns me is that perhaps this is how soc thinks relationships are. he didn't intend for knob to be abusive but ha one for it now the listeners identified it.

maybe he thinks it is perfectly reasonable for a school boyfriend to do that to his girlfriend?

Brian sounds to me like someone who went to Oxbridge!!

But honestly, she can't end up at felpersham.

GypsyFl0ss · 11/10/2015 20:08

Bloody hell. To have one misogynistic abusive male is bad luck , to have two...makes me think SOC could do with a bit of family therapy work.

AnnieNoMouse · 11/10/2015 20:16

I seem to have at least one moment per 15 min episode when I silently shout "fuck off!" at the radio - usually to Pip or Rob, and sometimes David/Ruth - and now to Alex. Please don't let him be another Rob. I can handle an insecure, immature teenage boy (providing Phoebe kicks him into touch in due course) but not a story with Phoebe giving up everything for lurve.
Does SOC generally dislike women?

And the story line on a soap can make a difference to its audience members. Back in the mid 80's I had left school, was in a dead end relationship and a poor relationship and watching on Brookside Amanda Redman, the young professional accountant, and Karen Grant going to uni, helped me to make my decision to give up my job (and shortly after my partner) and get myself an education.

I will be deeply upset if Phoebe doesn't escape her deeply dysfunctional family and BF.

AnnieNoMouse · 11/10/2015 20:19

dead end job, not relationship, - although that was dead end too.

Gruach · 11/10/2015 20:38

They're just doing it to tease us.

They can't destroy the tradition of Archer females being allowed out for learnin'.

Agree it will be a non Archer who breaks all Alex's bones sets her straight.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2015 20:38

I think SOC and the team always did intend Rob to be abusive. He just made one throwaway remark in an interview that it was amazing how quickly the audience picked up on all the early signs.

I also am quite sure (because the alternative is too awful to contemplate) that Phoebe will apply to Oxford and get an interview. Surely they have learned their lesson about being underambitious for their female characters? Hmm

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2015 20:44

Here we are. From SOC's review of 2014.

However, the story that seems to have intrigued listeners most has been the slow burn tale of the relationship between Helen and Rob. Is he the tall, dark, brooding man of romantic fiction? Or are Rob's traditional values and un-reconstructed attitudes indicative of something more sinister? I've been amazed by the extraordinary response from the audience to Rob's casual comments to Helen about her hair - or her cooking. Surely only The Archers audience could be so sensitive to nuance, the slightest change in timbre of Rob's perfectly modulated received pronunciation?

Gruach · 11/10/2015 20:52

See - to me that's the moment when a person running a radio show might suddenly "discover" that, actually, they could tell a different story ... (Clever Middle England eh?)

Travelledtheworld · 11/10/2015 20:58

I had a manipulative and controlling boyfriend when I was that age.
He wanted me to go to Uni in the nearest city and planned we would get a flat together.
Fortunately I dumped him at the end of that school year and went to Uni 350 miles away.

BYOSnowman · 11/10/2015 21:10

yay to you travelled!! let's hope phoebe follows suit!

soc totally thinks we are all a bunch of thickos and he is sooooo clever

BYOSnowman · 11/10/2015 22:15

Ruth isn't being very pleasant again

AskingForAPal · 11/10/2015 23:35

Holy McFuck, I knew I had a bad feeling about Alex for a reason. I just hope Phoebe's sad tone was "just one more roast dinner before I really must dump this little tit."

R4 · 11/10/2015 23:46

I think Phoebe will be OK, considering her rant about Kate not seeing things through. JD won't let her duck out anyway.

Although I'm not convinced that Phoebe is actually Oxbridge material, she didn't do a very good job of countering Alex in their 'debate'.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 12/10/2015 00:58

Just joining newthread. See i have some catching up to do

AskingForAPal · 12/10/2015 01:09

Well R4 at least Oxford tutors don't usually employ emotional blackmail!

R4 · 12/10/2015 09:13

True about Ruth.
"Oi, Daveed. Why are the dairy figures so bad? Can I not rely on you to run the place on your own whilst I go faffing up and down the A1(M) the whole summer for a woman who has a supportive group of local friends who she rates higher than family. It's not good enough, I am disappointed in you."

LibidinousSwine · 12/10/2015 09:32

That tractor lives up the road from me ebear :)

ppeatfruit · 12/10/2015 10:17

Hopefully Feebs will compare her non manipulative Dad to Alex , who to be fair, is very young and just wants to keep things as they are.

Everyone who leaves to go to uni has a similar problem don't they? Or was it just me Grin
