I have it on good authority that this is the thread that people enjoy more than the programme it's about Grin

nauticant "In Our Time" has exactly the same effect on me. I always have to go and read the stuff afterwards.

GypsyFloss · 09/01/2015 21:31

AllMimsy I think there's a functional skills assessment for those who don't get the C grade after a retake or possibly even two.

Dominic West played Fred West. I reckon he could do sinister!

I can't be arsed to look and I know you'll know the answer...remind me is NewTom the son of Tony IRL? I could really hear Tony's intonation in Tom's voice tonight.

PseudoBadger · 09/01/2015 21:41

Have we cast lovely Ed yet?

Also can I just check that it isn't only me who knows that there's nothing wrong with Johnny's numbers?

Yes Gypsy he's his son.

I love the thought of Prince Harry as Dan.

cheminotte · 09/01/2015 21:45

You may well be right Zero - we have dyslexia in the family and maths has never been a problem but I recently learned it takes several forms.

Julie Walters for Vicki sounds good - did anyone see her in the musical set in Manchester over Xmas?
What about Usha? I can only think of Meera Syal.

ZeroFunDame · 09/01/2015 21:49

I was thinking about this on the motorway on the way home. Johnny read out the quantities to Tina over the phone? Or...

(Was a bit distracted while listening.)

So are you saying Pseudo that Rob altered the figures at some point?

BiscuitMillionaire · 09/01/2015 21:55

Movie version: Peter Davison to play Kenton.

GypsyFloss · 09/01/2015 21:55

No Pseudo we haven't cast Ed yet. He needs to be fit and handsome. How about Eddy Redmayne ? The other night when he was interviewed with Felicity Finch he said he'd love a part in TA!

No, I don't believe Johnny's numbers are fucked. I think it's Rob doing a number , pardon the pun, on him to get rid of the golden boy.

And thanks I thought it was, so much so that I initially thought they were doing the birthday cake at the hospital!

Prince Harry would definitely have a crack at being Dan I think!

ZeroFunDame · 09/01/2015 22:00

BOOP-Point: SOC channeling Agatha Christie.

stilllearnin · 09/01/2015 22:12

all my brothers are dyslexic and it has a different effect on them all. they all get mixed up with numbers - not sure about 3 and 8 - more likely mixing up 12 and 21, but it depends on lots of things, lots of people find it hard to process what they hear. There are only 5 years between them and they all had different tests and different types of help!! i think the sabotage storyline is maybe to much with the CSA too, but you know, why not? Grin

BringYourOwnSnowman · 09/01/2015 22:50

Well obviously a 3 is easy to turn into an 8 but I didn't think rob was on the farm much now Tom had returned and the orde was only last week

Bluestocking · 09/01/2015 22:53

How about Ian McShane as Fallon's dope-dealing dad?
We need Sean Bean in there somewhere too.

nooldernowiser · 09/01/2015 23:06

Look - we all know that Jonny went to an underperforming academy in Leeds and failed his GCSEs dismally. With limited family support and probably eligible for free school meals his life choices were limited by poverty.

The chances of passing on retakes are quite low nationally. He will have 1 more go and then it will be functional skills. All colleges are now assessed on their post 16 retake success rates. Of course he could do an IGCSE which still includes speaking and listening- as he is good at that for an apparently poor educated 16 year old from OOOP North,

Am i overthinking this?

nooldernowiser · 09/01/2015 23:08

Plus ed and emma would be eligible for housing benefit and so there was no need for them to leave their cottage.

nooldernowiser · 09/01/2015 23:14

It's entirely in character, but Kate's veganism is never going to extend to refusing to take meat tainted money from her parents, is it?

vegan wine? gosh she was lucky they had vegan wine and cake at lunch.

nooldernowiser · 09/01/2015 23:17

I do think that rather than an agricultural adviser the Archers need a real life adviser. Maybe you could all offer to be an expert panel.

ZeroFunDame · 09/01/2015 23:21

I hadn't gained the impression that Johnny came from an unusually poor family. Don't know what his stepfather does (I mean "what difference his income would make to Sharon in addition to any income of her own") but hadn't noticed any suggestion of "going without". Have I missed something?

But yes, their portrayal of Ed &Emma's former poverty has been woeful.

GypsyFloss · 09/01/2015 23:25

I was under the impression that Sharon and her husband were not on the breadline.

It was how the lovely archer family were so patronising about his mother and his stepfather. Being sarcastic I think. Northern people are poor and uneducated as we know.

nauticant · 09/01/2015 23:38

Am i overthinking this?

Absolutely not nooldernowiser, I don't think that's possible on these threads! Some of the best posts have been the cow-based analysis by dairyfarmerswife.

Mind you, I expect to see lots of cow-based analysis in the future with Kate back.

I am definitely not dyslexic. I got an A in, what was in my day called "O Grades" in Scotland (100% in the prelim) in Arithmetic and an A in O Grade Maths. In those days Arithmetic being pure counting was a separate O Grade from the Maths one which focused more on calculus, trigonometry and the like. I know however that I have to be very careful not to transpose numbers e.g 1995 will become 1959.

However I don't think it's Johnny who has the problem.

PhaedraIsMyName · 10/01/2015 00:35

Eh? We didn't get terribly much info about them but I didn't get any impression that Sharon and her husband were anything like that. His stepfather came across as very caring and wasn't he supposed to be the person who turned Sharon's life around?

JessieMcJessie · 10/01/2015 00:46

Grin mimsy. I am looking forward to when they pull back the curtain and find Justin Elliott is much less than he is cracked up to be.

cheminotte are you thinking of *That day we sang?" ,the Victoria Wood one? It was great, but Julie Walters wasn't in it, it was Imelda Satunton.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/01/2015 00:52

Love the Oklahoma OK rewrite Grin

One of my dyslexic friends is an architect and he has to triple check all his measurement labelling on plans as he's liable to swap numbers or repeat/leave out a repeat number. (e.g turn 3544 into 354 or 35544)
