I don't believe they ever had a long term plan for the aftermath of Nigel's death. SATTC was just supposed to bring in new listeners - with no regard whatsoever paid to loyal followers. The follow up story was a complete shambles. All that nonsense with Elizabeth swearing never to have anything more to do with David. Completely fizzled out when they realised it would make TA impossible.

The current story is at least trying to address real things that might happen after a death.

The strikethrough does work like that but the -- need clear space either side of them. If you crash into other punctuation (eg the ] of the grin) then it wrecks the effect.
