Favourite Cabin Pressure Quotes/Moments/Episodes?

LollipopViolet · 02/05/2014 22:32

I'm still working my way through all of them, but I have to say, I love it. It's the first radio drama I've listened to, and really enjoyed it.

I might even give the Archers a go

Anyway, what are people's favourite quotes, moments or episodes?

I quite like the opening to the first episode. "Unless it's a farm. Or quite possibly the A46. It's not the sea... because that's blue." etc.

Come on, share your favourites :)

Oh I do love CP. I have them all on audiobook and go to sleep listening to it every night (how sad).

Fave eps are Douz and St Petersburg I think. I luuurve Douglas. He is sub-zero cool.

Douz is my favourite episode - the image of them driving Gertie through the desert to the next airport always makes me smile.

Bizzarely it isn't a funny moment, but when they hit the goose and have to land the plane in Moscow. Like a flash Douglas goes into uber professional mode in shutting down the engine and asks Martin very sensitively if he wants him to land the plane and then doesn't argue when Martin says no.

I found that very touching for some reason.

ComposHat yeah, I agree with you on that, it is touching.

I was listening to that episode today, actually.

I love the whole of Xinzhou, how much trouble can one snowman cause haha? Grin

Lolipop yes, the Xinzhou episode is a masterclass in people trying to get to sleep and failing this side of 'a night in' from Porridge.

Hey, do you reckon I should use Yvden as a model for my next job interview (if I ever get one! But that's another thread...) Grin

yes, but only the bit where he delivers the rousing speech! If you can do that without the dithering bit first!

Ah, slight problem there... :(

I've yet to get a CP quote into daily conversation, any advice? Short of calling everything "Brilliant!" I'm a bit stuck.

I have used the secret recipe for fizzy yoghurt line (yoghurt plus time) to describe various rotting foodstuffs.

Hahahaha I can't believe it! After my post about job interviews, I actually have one on Tuesday!!! It's to work in a little supermarket, wonder if I can somehow get "yoghurt plus time" into the conversation?!

I caught myself playing Yellow Car on the bus today - I saw 4 in one journey, I was strangely pleased Blush

Well done on the interview! Fingers crossed you channel your inner Martin and give a barnstorming monologue. The fizzy yoghurt answer is custom made for 'can you give an example of when you've used your own initiative'

Composhat, re- the bird strike near Moscow - I found that bit really touching too between Martin and Douglas. Despite all his talk and quips Douglas is basically an uber professional with a real care for Martin. He knew how important it was for Martin to do it, and that Martin was scared.

There's some really beautiful writing in Cabin Pressure. I like the moments when Martin admits (shamefully) to Douglas that he has no salary and in return Douglas admits his marriage is over.
When Douglas also 'ours' himself as teetotal (from bring a former alcoholic) in order to save their skin.
Also, the begging/rant of Martins to Carolyn about how little money he earns and how his life is when not flying.
And I also find it really touching when Arthur reveals that he wanted to be a pilot and got to the pilots exam, they called his name and he froze and didn't take it.

All written in a fantastic way, always with humour, but it's the pathos within it that's genius.

I also find rather touching, in an odd sort of way, in Xinzhou when Douglas tells Martin he should apply to Swiss Airways, for a few reasons, then finishes with "and you might fly with somebody... who doesn't use the travel iron in your flight bag to fry himself a bacon butty."

Agree, there is some beautiful writing in Cabin Pressure.

Oh, and the job interview? They were meant to ring me yesterday to arrange a time on Tuesday. Still no phone call.

It's going to be like the Fitton episode isn't it? Monday afternoon when I'm volunteering or something...

I love the games. The words-of-one-syllable one is played brilliantly. But my favourite is the one on Xinzhou when the rules get more and more complicated, and they end up singing "Have a banana" as part of it. :o

I've not listened to all of them, I almost don't want to because I know there's a finite number of them.

lollipop
yes that was a wonderfully well timed and delivered line. I will be on tenterhooks waiting for news!

harry Don't they have a revelation about one of the characters in the last episode of each series?

I was also touched by the one where Carolyn admits that she ran MJN to prevent herself from being a little old lady and she'd lost tons of money doing so.

I think like most great British sitcoms, it features deeply flawed people trapped in situations and with people they can't escape from. That's why it being in a small charter plane works so well I think.

Ha, managed to get "God's own fiery yoyo" into conversation today. Grin

News on the job front - no interview as, just my luck, the work programme provider I'm with, sent an old cv with deactivated mobile number. So I lost the interview. They have my current cv and current number so no idea what happened.

The God'd firery yo-yo is cracking quote too!

Ouch. Living in Scotland we very rarely face the full force of God's fiery yoyo.

Well, I've outdone myself today - I've officially listened to too much CP.

The words "I'd love to grow a pineapple. That'd be brilliant!" came out of my mouth (was in the process of cutting one up).

I stopped and thought "Good grief, I've channelled my inner Arthur!"

I'm scared!

I felt desperately proud of 9 year old DS the other day when I was cooking tea and I'd forgotten to put the extractor fan on as he sat there and calmly began 'Hey Chief, I may be wrong but...'

...ponders if this says more about my slack-arse approach to parenting that I'm proud of this or about DS...

Report
LollipopViolet · 20/06/2014 09:03

Nope, you can definitely be proud of that Grin

I need to stop listening to Cabin Pressure on the bus, and at the gym. I either sit there with a grin like this Grin or end up laughing, and when you've got headphones in, that gets you some funny looks.
