2yo twins and a newborn - which pram?

What are my options? My twins will be 2 in May and new baby is due in August. I have a Mountain Buggy twin atm which I love.

I was going to use a sling at first and then a buggy board but I love to go out for long walks so I think I need a pram they can all fit in. Second hand if possible because I want to keep the cost down.

I am veering towards a Jane powertwin with a buggypod - I think that will be my cheapest option. There is also the T3 Jogger and other twin prams with toddler seats, but they seem very expensive and hard to get hold of second hand.

Is there anything else I can consider?

you could get a triple mountain buggy

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2010 09:33

also there is the abc with toddler seat

Katz · 23/02/2010 09:33

would something like this do

triple buggy

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2010 09:34

i think you;d still manage long walks with just the mountain buggy/sling/bugy board though.
your twins will walk a certain amount, and when they don't want to they can either sit in, or use the buggy board. or you can have baby in the sling. should be fine

justallovertheplace · 23/02/2010 09:35

Keep the Moutain Buggy. And invest in a really good sling. I'd get a stretchy wrap like a Moby to begn with and then an Ergo. We have a single mountain buggy which I have for the same reason as you, I go on some very long walks, but we also have an Ergo and my ds who is 21 months and about 25lbs is still comfy enough in it that I can carry him all day

neenz · 23/02/2010 09:37

I'm really not keen on a triple because I struggle enough as it is getting the double in and out of shops, through doors, through bollards on paths etc. I had thought of it cos I think Maclaren do one for about £150, but there are loads of routes I do on foot with gaps not wide enough for a triple!

could you do a phil and teds with the twin attachment and have one of those toddler seats on the front - making it a triple?

Katz · 23/02/2010 09:46

or this with a buggy board think they make them for these prams specifically.

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2010 10:18

this would be fab

neenz · 23/02/2010 10:18

Katz, do you have a link to the Phil and Ted's please? I have tried to google but not found anything.

There is a buggy board that fits my Mountain Buggy and I was going to just buy that (and use sling sometimes) but I'd really like a pram they can all go in, and I think if I get it second hand I should get most of my money back when I sell it on.

so many diff configs!

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2010 10:20

one on ebay

single with 2 extra seats

neenz · 23/02/2010 10:20

Thisisyesterday - yes they are great!

I have seen them before but will I be able to get hold of one second hand? I really don't want to fork out loads on a new one.

oops, x-posted, just looking at them now. Thanks

i think if you can afford to buy one you'll make most of your money back on ebay tbh

neenz · 23/02/2010 10:26

I absolutely love that single buggy with two seats.

Imagine... a buggy that is only single-width. Heaven

I get such buggy envy when I see people with just one baby in a little buggy! My MB is so big and chunky in comparison and I am in the way wherever I go.

i have a double mountain buggy for my twins and either kiddyboards or kid-sit boards for my older two. the kid-sit boards are great and my older two love it (5 and just turned 4) we have been using them since twins were born dec last year. also when i had dd1, ds1 was 17months and he used to use the bugaboo board with a seat on (very much like the kid-sit) and loved it, we also had a double mountain buggy and he never wanted to use the buggy.

you could put a sling in the basket of the mountain buggy and have a kid-sit on the back and if both twins needed to go in the buggy you could use the sling for the baby.

i did look at the single abc and double toddler seat but they said it was as wide as the double mountain buggy in the end. i have had a single abc with a toddler seat before and they are great buggies.

neenz · 23/02/2010 17:29

Thanks mel, I will look into the kid-sit. I didn't realise they fit the mountain buggy. Is it a particular model or are they all the same?

Do you find going up and down pavements tricky or walking on rough ground? Do you have to be on the flat all the time?

OP posts:
neenz · 23/02/2010 17:35

Mel, my worry would be getting them to stay on the board - they will only be 2yrs 3mths, so I wonder whether it would be best to have a pram where I can strap them all in. Do you think they will be able to do the boards at 2.3? There's no way they would do it now but 6mths is a long time I suppose when you are nearly 2!

Definitely get a decent sling if you are planning to use it a lot - it will be a lifesaver. Can always get second hand if cost is an issue.

neenz · 23/02/2010 21:48

How comfortable is it to carry a baby in a sling for a walk of say an hour? The twins were quite heavy, I had a baby bjorn (just carried one at a time, my dh carried the other!) but not sure I would have been happy to use it for long periods, especially when pushing the double buggy, which is quite heavy.

It's so difficult to know what to do. I don't want to wait till the baby's born and just see how it goes and then realise I should have got a new pram anyway. But then I don't want to buy a new pram and then find I didn't need it after all!

Have you thought of a strolli on the mb, neenz?
I tried to put ds2 on a kiddyboard attached to our double mb when he was 2 and he was just too small for it, couldn't hang on. He's not a small kid by any means. Absolutely fine now (he's 3) but couldn't even see over the buggy.
I know two people with a double and a strolli and the kids both look happy and comfortable (course you could swap the twins round on it). An aria and first twin I think. But they do attachments for just about any buggy so I heard.
If you do want an ABC btw, they come up on TAMBA now and again - are you on there or could have a look for you?

re: slinging baby whilst pushing 2 2 year olds in a double buggy for an hour - you will kill your back doing this!!!! Knackering

justallovertheplace · 23/02/2010 22:03

No, you need to burn the baby bjorn. I had one of the fancy ones with supposed lumbar support with ds. I threw it out after 5 days because it made me feel that an 8 pound baby would break my back. Get a wrap I tell you. You will not even feel the weight of the baby, I guarantee.

BertieBotts · 23/02/2010 22:06

Not tried a baby bjorn, but I used to carry DS in a stretchy wrap for well over an hour with no problems - had a couple of days where I carried him all day and was out for about 6 hours. I stopped for lunch for about an hour each time which gave me a break, but other than that it was 5 hours in one day, didn't even have aches the next day.

I have a theory that baby bjorns etc are designed for men, because men seem to find them comfortable and women don't as much compared to "proper" slings.

accessorizequeen · 23/02/2010 22:12

Agree about the baby bjorn, but it's still a lot of hard work slinging a baby whilst pushing a double buggy with 2 heavy children in it. Recipe for knackered back imo.
I had an eden velveteen mei tei btw, it was so comfortable I almost wish I had another baby so I could have kept it. But not quite Good on you neenz!
