At what age did you DC stop using a pram?

The reason I ask is that I am expecting DC2 and can't decide whether to get a double side-by-side buggy (my preference) or a phil & ted style buggy (one underneath the other!). DC1 will be 21 months and whilst I know he will initially want somewhere to sit, when do the start wanting to be independent/scooter etc? Don't want to be pushing DC2 in a double buggy on their own!

Many thanks

I'd like to know the answer to this too - I was thinking of going for a Phil and Teds as at least when the bigger one doesn't want to ride in the buggy anymore you can use it as a single whereas it would be a bit silly to push a massive double buggy for only one child..

LaCerbiatta · 07/12/2009 12:55

My dd turned 4 in November ad we still use the buggy sometimes.

4CALLINGBIRDSandnotout · 07/12/2009 12:58

DD3 is 2.2 and just started to walk most of the time, i still take the p&t in doubles mode though just incase she gets tired or the area gets too busy or if it rains so it is quicker to get on!

DD4 is 14 months and only started toddling about indoors in the last few days so i think she will probably be in the buggy longer.

Ewe · 07/12/2009 13:01

My DD is 20months and whilst she loves walking and never wants to be in her pushchair she can't reliably walk very far, any trip where we don't take the pushchair inevitably ends up with one of us carrying her home.

My friend has two boys and her youngest is 21months and her eldest is just 4 and she still uses her P&T for both, great for shoving shopping in the bottom bit too!

muddleduck · 07/12/2009 13:01

Both mine were out of the pushchair by 2 (except for very long days out).

We had a 22 month gap and never used a double buggy. For the first couple of months I used buggy+sling and then shifted ds2 into the buggy with ds1 walking holding the buggy. Both of them got bored of walking after about 6 months and we then shifted onto a balance bike.

(I live in a village without a car so walk lots.)

Peabody · 07/12/2009 13:02

DS is 2.7 and we manage quite well either walking or with a buggy board for short trips.

However, if I want to be out for longer than an hour I need to take the double buggy because he gets tired/rearranges all the tins in the supermarket/runs off.

FlyMeToDunoon · 07/12/2009 13:03

I got a P&T and the older DD was 2. We used it in doubles mode for around 9 months and then because I didn't actually like it and because DD2 was that bit older we got a Maclaren XT and a buggy board.

nicolamumof3wisemen · 08/12/2009 19:15

so very much depends on the child and your lifestyle, if you walk alot or are out alot in all weathers. Depends on how much the child likes walking. I've found with my boys they enjoy the novelty of walking for maybe 6m or so then regress to wanting a buggy again!! DS2 is 4 in a couple of weeks but would ride in pushchair daily if he could he's not lazy and walks at least a mile most days just who wouldn't sit on their backside if they could get away with it lol!!

You need to think what you will do when its freezing cold/pouring with rain/you have poorly dc. i would definitely recommend a double. I have 18m between my two youngest and used double pushchair daily for 18m til ds2 was 3.2yr then i used a buggy board for another 3m then he just walked.

MrsJohnDeere · 08/12/2009 19:32

Ds1 at about 2.5/3 years, iirc. He'd still go in it if he could, but rarely gets the opportunity.

Ds2 has already stopped (or as good as) at 22 months.

20 month gap between my two. We used the double pushchair a lot for the first few months, but could have managed without it if we'd wanted to.

choufleur · 08/12/2009 19:35

Last used the pushchair last year when DS was about 2.4 or 2.5. do you walk a lot? what about a buggy board?

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 08/12/2009 19:49

We had a big age gap so no pressure on DD stoping but she decided of her own accord that she wouldn't go in it once she was 4.

tassisssss · 08/12/2009 19:55

We have 21 months between our 2 and I really fancied a Phil and Teds but didn't think I could justify the expense as didn't expect to use it much. So managed to get a bargain nipper on ebay (that I've loved) but I did actually use the double a fair amount for the first year of dd2's life and I still do from time to time if it's pouring or we're doing a long walk (my older girl is now 3.3).

So much depends on lifestyle, I have a school run to do and have to wake 2 sleeping girls at 3 to get down the hill for pick up. For months the only time i regularly used the double was for school pick up as poor dd1 wasn't really awake yet.

(then at 2.9 we got her into her scooter and there's been no looking back!)

addictedtofrazzles · 09/12/2009 08:29

Thanks for all your responses - we live opposite the park so are out daily (or twice daily!!) and I do walk a fair bit...my DS is enormous so can't face a melt down and me having to carry him back home! So perhaps I will get a second hand double and see how we get on.

For those of you with a P&T - if the toddler is in the back, can you have the baby flat in the front? It looks like you can't, in which case I will start looking for a side by side!

Thanks again

ps name changed - apologies for confusion!

MrsJohnDeere · 09/12/2009 10:13

addicted - no, the baby goes underneath (flattish) for the first 6 months, then goes on top but very upright.

nicolamumof3wisemen · 09/12/2009 13:28

addicted, baby goes in main seat fully reclined, and doubles fits on top of main seat.

Meglet · 09/12/2009 13:36

Mine are 3yo and 15mo and I always use the p+t. My toddler tends to bolt/ dawdle when we are in a rush so I'd go mad without the buggy. We walk everywhere and in all weathers, just seems easier to sit him in the buggy than all get soaked / be late. I'll keep using it for another year or so.

norksinmywaistband · 09/12/2009 13:43

I loved my P&T used it until Eldest was 3.5 as a double from birth of DS( so 2 years) then used a single until 4 months ago when I sold it. I found that at this stage DD was walking most distances and usd to just want the occasional ride, so used to sit her on the handle bar with her hands on my shoulders - not tippy as designed to have the weight at the back.

Now have got a micralite for DS who is nearly 4- but he will probably still be in a buggy when he starts school due to his asthma making walking in cold or hot weather a problem

MuppetsMuggle · 09/12/2009 13:45

DD was 3 when she stopped using it as loved to walk or we used the car in cold weather due to asthma & chest probs.

MrsMattie · 09/12/2009 13:45

Used our buggy until DS was 3 and a half. Was useful for shopping, longer journeys and when time was an issue and I couldn't be doing with a slow-walking toddler.

laughalot · 09/12/2009 13:47

Not a buggy expert but my friend said the other day that there is a buggy that is a doble but you can split eventually to be a single.

laughalot · 09/12/2009 13:47

double even

countrybump · 09/12/2009 13:48

My DS is 3.3 and we still use the buggy sometimes for long walks (ie walking the dog, and long christmas shopping trips!)

I have a single mountain buggy, and he sometimes goes in the while DD (2 months) is in the baby sling, or I use the double (an instep three wheeler thing, where they sit side by side.)

TBH I've never liked the phil and teds pushchair, I don't like having the baby underneath. The side by side I have is great, and as I knew DS wouldn't want to be in a pushchair all the time I bought it second hand.

But - it really is great when you want to go shopping and need to contain both children and have your hands free!

3ReindeerandNoRedNose · 09/12/2009 13:49

My ds (5) would quite happily be pushed everywhere now if he had the option (which obviously he doesn't!) but my dd (23mo) has been walking everywhere since she was about 18mo and never whinges to be picked up - what I'm trying to say is that it depends on your child!

racmac · 09/12/2009 14:18

I had 19 months between mine and bought a double buggy but wished i hadnt bothered - in the end i got a buggy board and that suited much better.

Depends on the child i suppose and how much walking you actually do.

oldwoman · 09/12/2009 14:24

I have a 24 month gap and I wish I'd had a P&T or simlar. I did have a side by side and I couldn't fit the damn thing anywhere, it was a nightmare to try and go shopping with. I have a friend with a P&T and she often has her 4.2yo and her 2.6yo in it still. It can be extremely difficult to control 2 toddlers near roads and the buggy is a good option IMO.
