Do I need a double pram for 2Y 4M age gap?

I’m having a baby November 2026 and my son will be 2 years and 4 months. Anyone that has a similar age gap did you get a double pram and if so any recommendations? Also, any experiences not getting one and doing buggy board xx

I would say it depends on how often you use a pram for your child now. I ditched the pram as soon as my eldest could walk but we live rurally so there was never much need for us to walk quickly to places or for him to walk far so we were able to build his stamina at his own pace and he also wasn't "a runner" so I felt he was quite safe. Age gap for mine is 2 years 6 months and I only ever used a carrier for my youngest as I hated the pram so much.

Just realised that this is posted in pushchairs. So sorry if my reply is curve ball!

I would say it depends on your 2 year old, if they don’t use their pram much and are a happy little walker I wouldn’t, obviously you’ll get the ohh my baby siblings in one so I need one you can use the “your the big bro/sister your not a baby you don’t need one” but if there okay walking places I wouldn’t worry

I have 4 children with similar age gaps between them and we very much still needed and used a pram. I went with the Mountain Buggy Duet - can get different attachments so is suitable from birth, very easy to push and it can fit through doorways. One of the best prams I've used.

I had a 2 year 2 month age gap. DC1 never wanted to get in the double pushchair so I got rid. I just kept a sling under the pushchair so if DC1 got tired I could put baby in the sling and toddler could have a rest.

dhagan · 31/03/2026 22:33

@sarah0106He is only 20 months old now so it’s hard to say. At the moment he is very reliant on the pram and is a runner haha. Thank you for the advice x

I managed from this age with a good buggy board (I had an uppababy vista and their board was great) Plus I always carried a sling if I needed to swap the children over.

A lot will depend on your lifestyle though and how much you use a buggy Vs other transport.

dhagan · 31/03/2026 22:35

@TakeTheCuntingQuichePatriciaGood idea! Thank you

I decided to start with a buggy board with a seat and then decide on a double pram and I’m happy I did. DS1 loves the buggy board and we didn’t end up getting the double pram, which would have taken up quite a lot of space in the hallway.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 31/03/2026 22:37

I had 22m gap in used the double buggy approx 15 times.

dhagan · 31/03/2026 22:37

@HateThese4LeggedbeastsWe’re in the car a lot but we do use it for shopping centres and walks to the park I’d say

22 month gap. Never needed a double buggy- such a faff on public transport too! Sling and buggy board all the way.

Bluefish109 · 31/03/2026 22:39

My age gap is 2y8m and older child loved the buggy so I got a baby jogger city mini double on Facebook marketplace for £100. Elder child is now generally pretty good on his scooter or walking so I don’t use it that often but I’m very happy I’ve got it. If you’re not sure you’ll use it much can always leave it until second baby arrives or scour marketplace for one (I was very fussy and did a lot of research as my first child is huge so needed something he would fit in!)

PedanticPrincess · 31/03/2026 22:39

2yr 9m gap here. Yes I got a twin pushchair and used it for around a year before buying a separate stroller for the youngest.

twentyeightfishinthepond · 31/03/2026 22:41

I found not. A pram with a buggy board sometimes and an occasional baby carrier for the baby worked for me. I wasted money on a double, as we didn’t use it. I do think it depends if you have a ruly or unruly toddler though. We had one who ran, so it wouldn’t have worked for that one.

HellenicOfTroy · 31/03/2026 22:42

I had this age gap and bought a second-hand inline Phil & Ted's (so two seats, one above the other). It was very useful for the first few months and I sold it on for the same amount afterwards.

I kept my main BabyJogger Versa so I used that with buggy board from.about 6mths + 3yrs onwards.

In your shoes, I certainly wouldn't buy a double buggy brand new, but a secondhand one will likely be very useful for a few months if poss.

rockstuckhardplace · 31/03/2026 22:43

It's been a while as they are teens now, but with a 2y 5m age gap I found the Phil and Ted's Sport to be great. The design may have changed, but the newborn lay flat in a bag and toddler went on top, then when the baby was older they would sit at the front and the toddler was underneath, and could climb in and out as needed. Great as it's only single width.

ParisianLady · 31/03/2026 22:45

We had this gap. Friend lent us a double buggy and I didn’t use it once. Buggy board, sling, and no issues. Never used the car, always public transport

carnivalcat · 31/03/2026 22:49

I have a two year gap with my two. Everyone told me I’d need a double buggy as my older child still used it at practically every outing however we opted for a buggy board first to trial it as we wanted to save on money/space. My older child took to the buggy board brilliantly and quite literally has never been in a pram since the day her brother was born! She walks everywhere now and is almost 3.

HellenicOfTroy · 31/03/2026 22:50

I think that's what's I had, @rockstuckhardplace! Or possibly the Explorer.

It was very similar to this: https://ebay.us/m/sjYF2O

I liked that it wasn't side-by-side, could be used as a single, and it had various configurations. There was a sort of soft carrycot that slotted into the bottom I think. The baby sort of slotted into that and someone in a shop once thought he was a doll 😁

Aprilmaymum · 31/03/2026 22:58

I didn’t get one (22mths) and used a buggy board and sling. However i picked a second hand one up at car boot and to be honest it was a life saver on holidays and trips to park. So maybe that’s an option

Zenbra · 31/03/2026 22:59

I have a 2 Yr 2 month age gap and rather than a double buggy, I got one that could be single or double as well as a buggy board. I ended up using it as a double for around 8 months particularly for long walks

TurnipsAndParsnips · 31/03/2026 23:19

We have a 2 year 4 month age gap and we just told DD1 that she had to walk and the buggy was for babies. She could walk for miles at that age, so it was no big deal.

NuffSaidSam · 31/03/2026 23:32

I'd wait until much nearer the time and then decide. Buggies aren't something you need to order eight months in advance. See how your first one develops his walking stamina/ability to listen to instructions over the next six months, see how you feel post birth and whether the new baby likes the sling etc. You can always pick up second hand double buggies for a good price (or get a brand new one delivered within a week).

OrdinaryGirl · 31/03/2026 23:35

We had twins, born when DS1 was 2.5, and a buggy board wouldn’t fit on their travel system. So he just had to walk everywhere! He was a real trooper and just got on with it, no dramas. 10 years later he will walk for miles and miles without complaining. 🤷🏼‍♀️
