Is it worth getting a double pram?

So I’m due my second baby in august and by then I will have a 20 month old too he walks pretty steady now however I’m not sure how he will be walking outside , is it worth getting a double pram just incase he gets tired sometimes or will it be a waste of nearly a grand ?!

It depends how much you walk (vs drive) and how often you need to be somewhere quickly/efficiently.

At 20 months it's unlikely that he will be able to walk long distances, efficiently and consistently. He'll likely still be napping too so factor that in if you're likely to be out over naptime.

Generally, it is worth a double buggy with that age gap, maybe a second hand one though?

Whiskeypowers · 03/02/2023 14:45

My first child was 23 months when my second child was born. I had a secondhand double all terrain buggy and carried on using it when third child arrived twenty months later with a buggy board attached.
I think you will get your money’s worth from a double buggy!

MaverickGooseGoose · 03/02/2023 14:46

Yes!

user2391 · 03/02/2023 14:50

We had a gap of 2yr 4m and I wasn't sure, but hands down best thing we bought. Lovely to put them both in and get some proper exercise. Great for when toddler doesn't want to walk and you just need to get home.

Wouldn't spend a grand though - we got the mountain buggy off EBay for around £40 and will probably sell for the same when done.

Danikm151 · 03/02/2023 14:58

Get one. Doesn’t have to be an expensive one though. There are loads on fb marketplace for a fraction of the cost.

the last thing you want is a stroppy toddler that doesn’t want to walk so you’re holding them and trying to push with the other hand

4thonthe4th · 03/02/2023 15:00

Absolutely yes! Similar age gap and my double was a god send!

stormelf · 03/02/2023 15:01

I have 26months between my first and middle child and 23months between middle and third child. A double buggle was essential for us. I don't drive so walk everywhere or get public transport. It gets used all the time and is handy even if the toddler isn't in it for shopping, school bags etc

NannyR · 03/02/2023 15:02

I would get one with that age gap, go for second hand though, you can get some great bargains. The Baby jogger city mini double is a good one to look out for.

DerangedViper · 03/02/2023 15:04

Do you actually mean a double pram? A proper coachbuilt pram (not a stroller, pushchair, buggy)?

If so, and you've found one, hell go for it!

They look amazing - but probably rather impractical unless you live somewhere where everything is in walking distance. They're too wide for public transport and I doubt you could get one in a car. But it would be just so fantastic to use one

Ruffpuff · 03/02/2023 15:06

A grand? There’s no need to spend that much unless you want to.

I’d definitely get one. 2 year olds get tired, sometimes still need naps, and generally aren’t very compliant when it comes to safety. Sometimes you’ll want to have somewhere to strap the toddler down while you deal with the baby out and about. At 20 months he’ll still be a young toddler, and his ability to walk everywhere and listen to instructions will be unpredictable.

milkmonitor20 · 03/02/2023 15:06

I had a 26m gap and ended up with two doubles. One travel system with the clip on car seat / bassinet that took up my whole boot but was more comfortable for them, and one second hand Maclaren that folded up smaller and we took on holiday / to muddy place etc.

Ohthepressureofaname · 03/02/2023 15:06

I had a similar age gap and got a second hand double which is still going strong now on baby 3. It was definitely worth it for me, my middle child is so lazy and I wouldn’t get anywhere without it. We’re getting rid of it soon as DC is off to school but I will miss it

SouperNoodle · 03/02/2023 15:07

Yes!! I got the luxury mountain buggy duet (the tyres are better) and it's amazing! I got it when mine were 17 months and newborn.
They're 3.5 and 5 now and I still use it if we have big days out (like the zoo) and they both get a bit tired.

FlounderingFruitcake · 03/02/2023 15:08

Absolutely! I’d only say not worth if DC is 3 or thereabouts. You don’t need to spend £1000 though.

My younger two are 22 months apart. Having my double pram was a life saver. We had one of the ones that the 'stacked' them rather than side by side which meant the elder of the two when they got tired could easterly hop in the bottom seat and have a sleep. Then when he was to big for that the pram worked as a single pram easily. Had an Oyster Max double and loved it.

kissthegirlshesnotbehindthedoor · 03/02/2023 15:12

Yes, I'd get a cheapy second hand one. Mountain buggy are good.

But also consider a buggy board?

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/02/2023 15:13

I had a double buggy and found it invaluable. Your main option is single buggy for the toddler and baby in sling .

Squamata · 03/02/2023 15:27

I thought I cd do without one but hadn't figured on toddler tantrum plus newborn. You can't carry a toddler and push a pram, you can't get a tantrummy toddler in a pram while holding a newborn (even in a sling!)

I kept having to hand newborn DS to randoms to hold so I got one! It was a Phil and teds second hand one for about £100, good because you can use as a single pram and adapt for different size kids.

Toddler would also no longer cot nap once baby arrived (fomo!) but would nod off in the pram.

If they both feel asleep in it, I was delighted!

Squamata · 03/02/2023 15:28

You might also have more stuff to carry around with two, which makes a sturdy one sensible.

Squamata · 03/02/2023 15:30

Think through your boot/doorway/storage sizes when choosing, they can be maaaasive

Yes. She's going to transport her 2yo around in a coachbuilt pram.

gemloving · 03/02/2023 15:34

100% worth it.

StopGrowingPlease · 03/02/2023 16:13

Assuming he already has a pram can you not just have him in the pram and the new baby in a carrier/sling? I still carry my 17 month old most of the time as I find it easier than the pram and he naps better on me 🤷‍♀️

jannier · 03/02/2023 17:09

Don't spend that much, get a good second hand like an out and about nipper

SingingWaffleDoggy · 03/02/2023 17:15

Absolutely yes, I’ve got a silver cross Wave and although my age gap was bigger than intended I would have been very glad of it had it been with a 20 month old.
I’d go second hand for your second child though. I used it as a single for both so it was still worth it but it was over £1000 and I’m now selling it for 400.
