Best stroller for a 2+ yo

I have the Babyzen yo-yo and was pleased with it until my 2yo tipped over and fell on his arm this afternoon (very dinky pushchair). This past few weeks, I've been having some serious thoughts about it as my toddler keeps undoing the buckle and letting himself loose which is extremely easy to undo! All he needs to do is basically try to get up, off it springs wide open! Also, it's a bit rubbish when the ground surface changes from smooth to gravel or little bumpy, it gets harder to push and my toddler weighs 13kg right now and the heavier he gets, the more muscle I need even if it's smooth city pavements. It has a small basket space which is ok but I would have preferred it to be larger.

I'm looking for a stroller which has;

Secure buckle
Sturdy frame
Smooth pushing (large wheels)
Larger basket
Secure interior and protection against our tropical British weather (rain, thunder, winter, summer heat)
And something I can use until he is 4 or over or when he gets tired from walking even if he seems old for an pushchair which would be ideal for long days out.
Also, I don't mind splashing out a few hundred pounds as long as I get min 2 years use. Max budget £600/£700

What would you recommend :)

I had the Silvercross Pop, plenty big enough for mine at 4yo, pretty light, sturdy, decent basket, hood & raincover. Also not very expensive!

Baby jogger city mini gt2 here. Ticks all those boxes for us and been great for our 2 year old. Only niggle is the seat is a bit too reclined and you can't get sit me up straps that fit any more but he's not overly bothered and we can put a blanket behind him.

Copernico · 30/05/2021 08:32

Uppababy minu - large basket and fantastic push for a stroller of its size and weight.

JC12345 · 30/05/2021 09:47

Baby jogger city mini or out and about nipper would be good.

When my ds was little I had the baby jogger city elite. Hands down, the best pushchair I ever owned. It used to fit my 10 year old in! It was still light to push! Huge hood, deep seat, big storage area. Big wheels, easy folding. Great pushchair.

Babyjogger city mini or Britax B-Agile. I've got a 12yo B-Agile and it's brilliant, still going strong, we've dragged it everywhere. My 2.9yo has loads of room and weighs about 16kg. Think it's only 15kg weight limit officially but the newer version is up to 22kg. And it doesn't seem a problem that he's heavier.

Get the official raincover for rain worthiness.

Thank you so much for your recommendations, I really appreciate it and will look into it. Yesterday night I browsed the internet as well as I didn't see any responses as soon as I posted, I saw bugaboo plus 6 and Mamas and Papas Cybex as well, does anyone have any thoughts on those too although they are pricier? I'm also thinking about a second baby as well in the next couple of years that he/she could also inherit.

I went with a silver cross pop for my tall 2.5 year old. She has some additional needs which mean she will likely still be in a stroller for a while yet and the pop goes up to 25kg weight limit whereas lots of others are only 15kg. It's a really good price on Amazon at the moment too.

BertieBotts · 30/05/2021 15:11

The Cybex ones don't go the distance. Have a look at the Stroller Workshop Youtube channel - they don't rate Cybex at all. I think they are nice for baby prams, but no good if you want a workhorse.

Bugaboo do some all-terrain ones which might be a bit more robust.

eatbroccoli · 30/05/2021 15:17

My 2yo is really tall as well and extremely strong, I just want to make sure I have something that has a really tight harness where he can't escape and also something he can't tip himself over.

I've looked on Amazon for silver cross pop and they do have a good deal. The tyres are good aren't they and easy to push? The yo-yo has, what it feels like plastic tyres where it makes every muscle on your body work so I don't want to be in the same position again pushing a 13kg toddler, shopping in the basket and the actual frame uphill where it feels I'm carrying all the weight Grin

Just a silly question-

I've been seriously looking into the baby jogger city elite pram and wondering where I can actually get it from? Some websites shows its upto 22kg whereas it should be max child weight capacity of 34kg where I've read about it.

Also, does anyone have any experience in Joie Versatrax? I've narrowed my list to:

  1. Silvercross pops
  2. Baby jogger city elite
  3. Joie Versatrax

Just a recap, I have a hyperactive 13kg 2yo who likes escaping and is strong enough to tip himself over in his Babyzen YOYO, so I need to a sturdy pushchair, with decent sized basket, excellent suspension and tyres where we will be outdoorsy this summer and also great cover for rain and our tropical British weather :)))

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 31/05/2021 17:01

Versatrax has a reversible seat so it isn't sturdy and the suspension isn't great. It's good if you want a cheap travel system from birth, but not for your purposes I'd say.

Often buggies will have a different weight limit in EU and US. Apparently EU regs require it to be tested to 1.5 x its capacity to be certified whereas in the US they can test it right up to a capacity and certify that as the max weight limit.

That seems to fit the two weight limits posted - could it be that perhaps?

Maclaren techno!

BonnyEm · 31/05/2021 22:20

Unfortunately, I don't know where you'd buy a baby jogger city elite. I bought mine, nearly new, on eBay almost 10 years ago.
My ds was also an accomplished escapologist, he would often climb out of his pushchair while he was going along. As much as I loved him walking. It wasn't practical all the time, especially as when he was young I often walked 7 miles a day for the school runs. No matter how tight the harness was he would still escape. I ended up resorting to using food bag clips, like these one clipped on his chest to secure the two straps going over his shoulders so he couldn't slip his arms out and then climb out. I know that sounds horrific. But it didn't hurt him. And he did get plenty of exercise Grin I didn't strap him in there permanently.

Out and about 360. My 5.5 year old can still fit comfortably (tried just for fun). Amazing to push over all surfaces. Good harness. Excellent rain cover.

eatbroccoli · 01/06/2021 22:08

I've just managed to locate one baby jogger in John Lewis, so tomorrow hopefully I'm going in to see some. I'm also going to see some Bugaboo's as well and also the Silver Cross and Maclaren. Out and about is no longer available in John Lewis. Obviously John Lewis will price it higher, I will see tomorrow once I make a decision and try to price match. I'm going to take my little boy with me and get him to test it out (hopefully they will let me because of covid) but it would be good if we can as I will be able to see if he can defeat the harness and the stroller balance. Thank you for all your responses and taking time in replying :)

You can buy an extra strap that locks so they can’t undo it - something like this:
www.amazon.co.uk/Harness-Threading-Required-Prevent-Children/dp/B076PCXGNK/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Car+Seat+Safety+Clip&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1622582016&sr=8-3

Could use it on your yoyo as a temporary fix

eatbroccoli · 01/06/2021 23:38

@Sideofnoreturn that's a good idea! I'll order a couple of these as I need one for the car seat as well. I currently use his reigns right now but this is much easier. Thank you so so much 🙏

BertieBotts · 02/06/2021 00:04

For the car seat you should stick to a crash tested one - Besafe Belt Collector is a good one to go for. For the buggy it doesn't matter what you use because it's not going to be tested in a crash.

mayblossominapril · 02/06/2021 00:06

I’ve got a silver cross pop and my nearly 4 year old loves it. He’s still got plenty of room as it’s a really generous seat. I also have a city mini double and DS is getting a bit big for the seat size wise and he’s not a big child. Both are really solid pushchairs but I do prefer the Pop (atm have to use the double most of the time).
I have a mamas and papas stroller as well and it’s hopeless with a preschooler in it, fine for my 9 month old though.

mayblossominapril · 02/06/2021 00:09

DS went through a phase of escaping the harnesses on pushchairs.
most pushchairs have D rings and I just used a pair of reins and there’s a bit that clips on the D rings. He couldn’t escape then

eatbroccoli · 02/06/2021 00:49

I'll bare that in mind for the car seat crash tested one! 🙏

With the Baby Joggers and Silvercross Pops, what has your experience been with it when travelling on plane? So basically I'm due to go and see family in a green list country soon and have always used the yo-yo as it's been my main pushchair and it's great because it's cabin size and I can use it until the last minute. So I'm just wandering what I should expect when travelling with a new pushchair as my 2yo is extremely hyperactive and can't be trusted and most of the time can't even be controlled even with reigns, so ideally I would need the pushchair to be left at the gates and not checked in with the luggage where I would then have to spend the next 2 hours running after my crazy little boy ConfusedGrin

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 02/06/2021 01:12

You can normally take the pushchair all the way to the gate :) It's then put in with the baggage. You don't get it back immediately though - you have to wait for baggage claim, which is usually after passport control so it would just be that bit which you'd have to manage him.

If there are suspected SN I'd be playing that card and asking the airline whether they'd release the buggy to you early, but I don't know whether it's always possible to do that depending on how the baggage is unloaded.
