Will I need a double buggy?

daydreamer2020 · 11/03/2021 15:57

So my DS is 17months old and will be 22months old when my second is born. We rarely use the pushchair now as he such a good walker. But at the moment if he does get tired on a walk we do carry him sometimes.

I'm just wondering if a double buggy is necessary. I intend to use my baby carrier for baby as much as possible but as they get bigger/heavier they will need to be in the pushchair. The only time we'd use it is probably in shops and stuff but then i just feel like a double buggy would be so big to push round shops and stuff on my own. Or would a buggy board be better? Or is that being optimistic to expect a 22month old to stay on a buggy board?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Could you get something that converts to single?
So short walks out use as single with buggy board, longer days out or if you just need them contained for safety, rain, speed add the second seat

daydreamer2020 · 11/03/2021 16:01

@Caspianberg Tbh I didn't even know you could get one that converted!! I think it's something that I will look in to getting!!

Ime a double buggy =sanity saver..
With a bit of tweaking you can get both napping.. On a cold rainy day you can get out and about.. One poorly? Still get out for a walk.... I have gaps of 13 months and 20 months. Double buggy was an essential!!

Puffykins · 11/03/2021 16:08

I had the same gap as you and never got a double buggy. I used a papoose for the baby/ when the baby went in the buggy then DC 1 walked/ scooted/ went on the buggy board. We also had a second buggy for the rare times that we were out all day with both children, which really only happened at weekends so DH would be there too, and honestly the second buggy was so rarely used that I feel it totally validated my never having got a double buggy.

Twizbe · 11/03/2021 16:13

I got a second hand uppa baby vista when I had my second. My eldest was 2 at the time. He wasn't quite read for a buggy board though.

I found it very useful as I walk everywhere lol.

My friend tried to do sling and pushchair but gave up after one outing. Her toddler was a runner and trying to wrestle him into the pushchair with baby strapped on was just too much for her

smeerf · 11/03/2021 16:13

I did baby in travel system + toddler in buggy board with seat or baby in sling + toddler in pushchair (not advised in the rain!)

SleepingStandingUp · 11/03/2021 16:13

How about something like this? Car seat for baby, plus two buggy seats so when baby is bigger they can both use it as a buggy but also you can just have one seat and a sit down buggy board.

We had it for our twins so different but it's so versatile

And yes you can have baby facing you in any seat

jimjamjoo · 11/03/2021 16:20

It's worth looking on fb market place or gumtree if you do decide to get one. We got a joie evalite ( recommended on here) for £20 which we have used occasionally. Our age gap is 26 months and DC1 is a very keen and active walker. I didn't feel so bad about spending £20 on something we use now and again.

Caspianberg · 11/03/2021 16:22

Something like the Phil and teds range maybe

PrincessesRUs · 11/03/2021 16:33

Buggy board! Ours is amazing!

daydreamer2020 · 11/03/2021 18:32

Thank you for all the reply's. He is pretty good on walks but I think I'm just so nervous about taking two out on my own without having the option to strap him in to something if I need to. I might keep an eye out on but and sell groups and see what comes up.

I'm expecting my 3rd baby due May 1st and will have a 21 month gap between my daughter and new baby (other child will almost be 4yrs). For the first few weeks I'll be continuing with a single pushchair and baby in a sling or carrier. When they start to become heavier I will then swap to a double (I don't drive and have to do 4 trips back and forth a day for sons dropping off and picking up from nursery). I've managed to get a Joie Evalite Duo off FB Marketplace for £60. Even if it's not used much I can justify paying that instead of full price and brand new.

OverByYer · 11/03/2021 18:45

I had 2yrs 8 months between mine. I bought a second hand double for those walks that were a bit longer/ on my own etc

Vanannabananna · 11/03/2021 18:49

I had 2 yr 8 months between mine. I got a double city jogger and used it loads. The older child hopped in and out as needed but it was great for longer days out and walking anywhere. Plus you can put all the crap you need for 2 in the basket!!

Justscrolling · 11/03/2021 18:52

I have the same gap and got a buggy board which was amazing. He could use it if he didnt want to walk anymore but it wasnt the same hassle of a double buggy. Also found that within 6 months he doesnt even use the buggy board so would have got so little use out of a double.

footprintsintheslow · 11/03/2021 18:57

How about a buggy and a Tula carrier. You can get one that fits newborn and toddler. So whoever needs the sling can use it and whoever needs the buggy can do so. It can be changed on any given day according to your needs.

Or of course a buggy board which I personally love. My toddler just jumps on and off according to how tired she is if we need to go fast to get the baby to sleep

footprintsintheslow · 11/03/2021 18:59

The Tula explore is the one with a huge age range. And the patterns are gorgeous

You could do that, but life is easier with a double buggy.
Phil & Teds: flexible seating arrangements, can use from birth up to about 4 yrs old, collapsible and regularly on Facebook marketplace.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 11/03/2021 19:03

There's 19 months between mine and we don't have a double. I used a carrier a lot when baby was small, and didn't get a buggy board until eldest was about 26 months.

We did get a light umbrella fold buggy for the toddler though. It was far easier for me to get in and out of the back of the car while heavily pregnant compared to the heavy travel system, and has served us well on longer walks and days out.

It depends on your lifestyle and the willingness/capabilities of your eldest. I don't go for long trips on foot with both of mine by myself, and my toddler is happy for an hour or so on his balance bike.

Freetodowhatiwant · 11/03/2021 19:09

It depends on your lifestyle. We walk loads and I thought I would try to get by with a small baggy and a sling but it just wasn’t good enough. We were living in the city and doing walks sometimes up to 20km or more. I eventually got a double and loved it. In fact the oldest child was in it until he was older than 4 but this was because we would use it to get around speedily. He’s always been a great walker and could easily walk 10km but we would have the double there for when he needed a break which he inevitably would when we were doing a 20km walk. Also it felt great to be able to have the two of them in one manageable place. The mountain buggy duet was my favourite.

sunflowertulip · 11/03/2021 19:18

I had 20 months between mine and I did use it, but we did a lot of walking. I used a carrier a lot too for one or the other. We paid £50 or so and had a Phil Ted sport so was the width of a single.

Greenmarmalade · 11/03/2021 19:19

Absolutely get a buggy. 2 year olds can be fairly temperamental and you need to get to places fast sometimes.

Plus you may be able to walk and get both to nap at the same time (gold dust), which you can’t do with a buggy board.

footprintsintheslow · 12/03/2021 21:18

Good point about naps. Get a double buggy. Make sure it fits in your front door otherwise you won't get the benefit of the naps.

Mine doesn't nap ever now so buggy board is great for us.

Toomuchleopard · 12/03/2021 21:47

I tried to manage with single buggy and buggy board with 2 year age gap and gave up quickly. Had a scary experience with a massive truck coming and not being able to get up the kerb with toddler on the buggy board. Got a baby jogger double and never looked back. Then got another one when my 3rd baby was born. These were both bought/sold on eBay. Keeping them both safe and contained, naps at the same time - double buggy is invaluable. All 3 of mine used to go in together.
