Vintage Silver Cross Wayfarer - I have a question...

Bazwelsh · 19/10/2019 00:00

I need honest answers please...I have a grandson who stays with me regularly. I have a Bugaboo Cameleon 2 for him, which I love. However, I have a big urge, really big urge, to get a vintage Silver Cross Wayfarer (google it) cos I loved my one so much. For those that don’t know, the original Wayfarer was very popular, much like it’s current namesake. Here’s my question: If you were to see an older lady (early 50’s) with a 1 year old in a vintage silver cross wayfarer pushchair walking down the street, would you think 1. Weirdo; 2. Ooooh I used to have one of those for my children; 3. Ah that’s sad, that lady can’t afford a new pushchair, she’s dragged her old one out (which is my daughter’s answer); or 4. Any other answers. Please be kind 😔😊
Many thanks for your time.

I'd think 2. and remember what a brilliant pushchair it was. Bought it from my sister, used for my 3 and then sold the whole travel system at an NCT sale.

Here's mine 24 years ago....... lovely memoriesSmile

Vintage Silver Cross Wayfarer - I have a question...
Knittingnanny · 19/10/2019 00:12

Well I can understand you totally! I would love to be pushing my grandchildren out in my old silver cross big wheeled pram. l’ve seen a couple of mums out locally with them and thought “ ahhh their mum kept it for them how lovely”
However practically speaking ( because I bought a big bouncy mamas and papas vintage pushchair from a charity shop ) you will have got used to the lightweight, portability, ease of folding etc of the modern day equipment!
The vintage one wouldn’t fit in my car boot!
You could always just get one on eBay and try it out for nostalgic reasons though .

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/10/2019 00:15

@Knittingnanny ....... it's the one in the picture not a big old coach built pranks Grin

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/10/2019 00:15

*pram

Knittingnanny · 19/10/2019 00:27

Ah yes I realise that now, I still think you would find it more impractical than the modern ones though

Expressedways · 19/10/2019 00:29

If it’s the one pictured it doesn’t look that safe by modern standards- no shoulder straps for instance?! It is occupied by a super cute baby though! How old is he now MaidenMotherCrone? But yeah if I noticed it, I’d probably think you’d bought some tat from a jumble sale. It looks like old junk not a vintage gem so I’m with your daughter on this one (sorry)!
Could you not compromise and get a lighter but modern stroller for your house instead of the Bugaboo beast?

Preggosaurus9 · 19/10/2019 00:42

This is 2019, this is your grandchild. Not appropriate to use him as an excuse to get mugged down memory lane.

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/10/2019 00:45

It did have shoulder straps. It was also expensive. I loved that pushchair.

NerrSnerr · 19/10/2019 01:16

I wouldn't think anything, it's a pushchair.

If you want one then buy it, why does it matter what others think?

Bazwelsh · 19/10/2019 09:49

Thanks for your honest answers. I really appreciate it. Quite a mixed bag of opinions but glad that none say ‘weird’ 😁 (yet)
Thanks again.

Definitely not weird at all!
I want one now.
I couldn’t afford nice new stuff when I had my first 2 in the early 80’s so had whatever I inherited including my fab big pram!
When I had my 3 rd in ten early 90’s I had a mothercare version of the wayfarer called the overlander butwas so disappointed as it didn’t have the newly invented swivel wheels!
I’ve mainly used an umbrella folding lie back buggy which goes in the boot easily for my local grandchildren but miss the big tray to put all the stuff on.
It’s amazing looking at how baby transport has evolved just in the last 30 years, I would have found a buggy board nd a lift off car seat so useful for instance..
Having said that, I’m now recalling that in the early 1980’s if I went anywhere in someone’s car, my baby was on the back seat in a flimsy Moses basket with a couple of straps looped over! How on earth did we ever think that was safe, babies weren’t even secured inside the basket .

RandomMess · 19/10/2019 10:20

Compared to the Cam you will find it more hard work to push! Plus it will be heavier than you remember for lifting in and out the car!

If you can get one of the last ones produced they were black and had hoods so not so out of date looking.

You will marvel at how compact it is folded though!

I had the double as well, was a master of engineering!

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 19/10/2019 10:20

I have a friend who did this with her daughter in the last few years, used an 80s wayfarer as she was really into retro things. It was an absolute bastard to use. Very heavy and handle at a very uncomfortable height. Also I’d worry about how it had been stored for the last 30 years and wether it had any mould spores on it. It’s a nice idea op, and I’d probably assume you were using your old one, but in practice I don’t think I’d do it. Just knowing how big the separate sunshades and raincover were would be enough to put me off.

thenightsky · 19/10/2019 10:32

I had one for DD in 1986 and got it refurbed with a new seat and wheels for DS in 1991. It was the only one I could find that was good for tall mums (5ft 9in) It was considered expensive at the time (£90). Lovely and chunky and a nice big basket underneath for shopping.

There's one on EBay Smile

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/10/2019 10:44

@Knittingnanny the Wayfarer travel system had a lift off car seat. It was great.

Knittingnanny · 19/10/2019 10:47

Ah my youngest is 28 so not sure they were around in 1991? Or maybe out of my price range at the time. I did have a little yellow baby car seat with fabric carry straps which was probably an early version of today’s proper car seats though

ThreeLittleDinos · 19/10/2019 11:49

I would probably think it was quite lovely. I love seeing older pushchairs, they look sturdier and more robust than a lot of the newer ones. Tend to have a lie flat seat rather than bucket too, much comfier. I'd possibly even stop to compliment it if you looked friendly and not in a rush Grin

Bazwelsh · 19/10/2019 21:43

Ah thanks everyone! Yes surprisingly there are quite a few available for sale. I agree that you don’t know how they’ve stored etc, which a pushchair if that age is something that should be considered.

Your views have all been really helpful - thank you x

I have done exactly that, although I changed the harness to a new one for safety sake. I loved my old Wayfarer Roadster and I managed to get one in exactly the same colourway, only this time I have the carrycot too. It’s heavier than a modern buggy, but it takes a child up to five years so it will have a long working life.

Handsnotwands · 29/06/2021 15:46

My MIL did exactly this. She couldn’t figure out my modern pram so dig out Dhs old way fairer. Neither her or I cared what people thought 😂 it is a very practical pram but my toes used to catch on the basket. I am tall though

30degreesandmeltinghere · 29/06/2021 15:49

I bought a very old maclaren pushchair for ds 4 years ago!! Square type with butcher stripes! He loved it!!

I had one of those for dd, the pink & grey stripes it was fab as you could swivel the seat for forward/rear facing some bugger nicked it from outside my front door☹️ & my lovely DF replaced it as I was so upset & we couldn’t afford another one, dd is now thirty five
dontcallmelen · 29/06/2021 15:58

Ahh I think I had the posh stripe Maclaren not the stripe umbrella type
For Ds I had a silver cross Pram with the massive wheels, when it was raining & the hood was up I couldn’t see over it used to regularly run people over with it, was beautiful to push though & so springy & could get a weeks shopping in the tray underneath.

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 29/06/2021 16:00

I had a MacLaren super dreamer with a car seat!
