Lightweight pushchair for tall parents

I thought my buggy addiction was a thing of the past but it seems not! I need something very light and think its probably going to be a yoyo but thought I'd check what you all thought first...

I have a cam which I use for proper walking, but live in an upstairs flat and am pregnant, finding it increasingly hard to get it up and down stairs.

I have a maclaren quest which is my lightweight alternative, and I actually like it quite a bit APART from the fact I kick it all the time (managed to kick the brake on while crossing a busy road the other day- pretty dangerous as well as annoying) and it makes my shoulders because I'm hunched over it. Also I hate the lack of suspension.

My ideal buggy would be about 4kg, would have a tall or extending single handlebar, a full recline and calf rest, full suspension, and a very upright upright seating position.

The yoyo fulfils some of this but there are some areas in which it's not as good as my quest. The quest has a calf rest, a full recline, a really good raincover, a nice well supported upright position.

I'm tempted to wait for the mountain buggy nano but not sure it'll have a tall enough handle bar anyway, plus it looks quite ugly.

I hate the micralite...

Can't find anything else light and tall... By light I mean 6kg or under, definitely no more otherwise I can't get DS up and down stairs any easier than in the cam

Hello,

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out strollers and buggies. Read our buggy reviews for a list of the best lightweight strollers around.

Hope that helps!

Your ideal buggy sounds amazing.

It does not exist.

I would recommend a babyhome emotion xtreet but the handle is low and it's not mega upright. Oh and it's kind of unwieldy to carry. Arse.. none of that is any good is it.

Casual play livi?

Are you going up and down stairs with ds in the buggy?

chocolatemartini · 18/11/2013 22:31

I was fairly sure it doesn't exist! Yeah I'm carrying him up and downstairs in the quest... I know there are many reasons I shouldn't be lifting it with him in, but he is a pita to get out of the house at the moment and it's often best to have him strapped in at the top of the stairs, also he's often napping when I return, and would wake up if I took him out.

I bet someone will make my ideal pushchair just as my youngest dc outgrows buggys. Then I will have no choice but to have a dc3...

Bugaboo Bee?

Ihateparties · 18/11/2013 22:54

:-( at some point you're probably going to have to stop carrying him and the buggy at the same time.

I saw a really good combi recently, will find the link.. f2 doesn't meet all your requirements but is pretty cool.

I have an xtreet, which is close to what you want. Day to day I'm using a red kite zumi which oddly is also very close to what you want. Only front suspension but has big wheels so a different experience to a Mac. My only reservations for you are the handle isn't particularly high, it's kind of average and also in typical 3 wheeler style it is slightly tippy. Very light though. I lift it with my 21m old in on regular basis and probably would have done whilst pregnant (I did so with xtreet back then) but logistics are more tricky.

chocolatemartini · 18/11/2013 23:07

I have been tempted by a Bee at times but it isn't light enough.

The F2 really is light!! Will look at the others you mentioned too. Am fed up of kicking the quest so will only buy something if it is taller.

Once I finish being pregnant I may just buy some birkenstocks and take up tandem baby wearing until they are teenagers able to walk for themselves. If I hadn't spent so much on pushchairs and slings maybe we'd have had a house without stairs up to the front door by now GrinWink

chocolatemartini · 18/11/2013 23:13

Ooh F2 is tall as well... How do you get one?

OP posts:
Ihateparties · 19/11/2013 14:08

I don't know.. unobtainable pushchairs seem to be my speciality.

chocolatemartini · 19/11/2013 17:05

Haha very helpful thank you!! Might go and play with a yoyo tomorrow if I can be bothered to get down stairs and out the door with toddler...

Ihateparties · 19/11/2013 17:15

Oh you haven't been to see one? Definitely go!

Artandco · 19/11/2013 17:17

There's a new yoyo due out in the spring. With a parent facing from newborn new feature.

chocolatemartini · 19/11/2013 17:45

No I haven't had a play with one yet and yes I saw that there's a new version coming out. Wonder if there'll be discounts on the old model in Jan. Not too bothered about the newborn mode as I will definitely use a sling for the new one for at least six months and single for my toddler. Anyone know if there are any other improvements on the new model yoyo apart from the newborn kit?

Tiggywunkle · 20/11/2013 23:01

The YoYo recline is near enough flat for my liking! Its not worth quibbling over IMHO.
I see parties suggested the Casual Play Livi which does have a lie flat recline and a calf rest. Its a great option if you dont mind a bit of extra weight?
Have you looked at the Nuna Pepp too, and the Graco Evo Mini? Both are great.

The new YoYo looks like its got a slightly different handlebar. I know the team are planning on getting the YoYo certified to a higher weight limit to prove its strength. But I think fundamentally its similar.
The newborn pack is an optional extra.

Baby Trend Expedition LX Jogger - Black Mist? For sale on amazon. I adore mine and am tall (5 ft 8) and it is jsut right for me.

chocolatemartini · 22/11/2013 11:05

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm actually now looking at the G luxe, seems pretty tall and does most of the stuff I want it to do.

Imo it won't be better than the quest. I got a joovy groove, thinking all wheel suspension and ball bearing wheels would make for an umbrella stroller i would actually like. After using it for a while I ended up thinking it's their umbrella-ness I don't like, the general feel. So however good it is I will still find it rattly, back heavy and harder to steer that something with a bar handle. It's possible it will fix your issues with the quest I suppose, depending on what they are exactly..

chocolatemartini · 22/11/2013 16:23

Well I like your discouragement tiggy because I wasn't exactly feeling excited about another umbrella stroller... Still haven't managed to get myself to a shop to see the yoyo, that's the one I think I'm really after Grin

Sorry! That was you Ihateparties stupid phone won't show me posts while I wrote mine...

OP posts:
chocolatemartini · 22/11/2013 16:27

Oh, and my issues with the quest are mostly that I kick it all the time and it's hard to push and bumpy. It's the kicking that's getting me down though

Just throwing this in as my husband is 6ft + and got on well with our Maclaren XT, it's is bigger all round, does recline, fab rain cover (extra zippy bit in hood) and it has a bit of suspension. I loved it, a good all round urban vehicle. Recently passed it on to childminder friend, who is delighted with it, despite it being two + years old!
It does have sep rain cover too, but often the hood extension will do.

Ihateparties · 22/11/2013 16:34

Esp as you're going to be doing at least some buggy and sling I think easier to push comes higher up the list in that context. Is that still the plan?

I kicked the groove a bit too. I kick my red kite occasionally but mostly I kick the board first Grin… kicking got dropped way down my list of requirements at some point. But I know it drives some people really nuts.

chocolatemartini · 22/11/2013 16:37

Haha, that's what we started out with- an xlr actually, DH will probably divorce me if I start repeating pushchair purchases!! I've had 5 so far, which I know won't seem many to some on this pushchair board Wink anyway, all the maclarens that are bigger than the quest will be too heavy to get downstairs will toddler in but thanks for the suggestion

FlouncingIsles · 22/11/2013 16:38

Baby Jogger City Mini everytime. I love mine having had a bugaboo cam (wouldnt fit in my new car). Folds up small super easily and is really light. I am 5'9" and DP is 6'3" and neither of us find it short. Smile

chocolatemartini · 22/11/2013 16:52

Yeah easy to push is important with a sling, I spent many a journey with an empty buggy and ds1 in a sling so I have some recollection of what it was like. But I still plan to use the cam for day trips and longer walks, it's more for nipping to the high st or bus/ train/ tube journeys that it really isn't worth the effort getting the cam downstairs. I just KNOW someone will make a really good fully featured 5kg pushchair just when I don't need one any more, it's such a gap in the market.

And yes I'm afraid the BJCM's too heavy too flouncingisles

OP posts:
Ihateparties · 22/11/2013 16:52

Also too heavy I would guess?

Hmmm.

Go and see that yoyo, in the meantime i'm still thinking.

chocolatemartini · 22/11/2013 17:04

Thanks parties. Yeah the red kite zumi is a bit heavy at 7kg for what I'm after... Looks good in many ways though. I'm unwilling to compromise on weight as the cam isn't actually all that heavy (9kg?) and does everything I want except levitate, so I need something super light AND good to tempt me away from it.
