Escalade Pram!

Hi everyone,

I chanced upon this pram on youtube and thought it would be great for my sister who lives in an apartment building without elevator and other mums out there who have experienced this problem.

let me know what you think,

It looks conceptual atm, I doubt there are any actual prams available to buy.
Those sliders that pop down that are used for stairs look heavy, hell, I suspect the mechanism that is used for them is heavy too. I wouldn't fancy trying to push that escalade up 5 flights of stairs...

There are already pushchairs that can be used for stairs - the xplory I borrowed was very easy to use with stairs, both up and down.
A better idea for your sister could be something easily folded and lightweight for carrying up stairs, like a Bee, which you can put over your shoulder and carry (which I saw on babygizmo, never done that myself!).

If it folds with one hand I can see it being useful for the tube, but other than that...I'd rather move houses than have to use that Blush sorry.

They say it will be released in 2013:-s
It definetly looks like it will be heavier but maybe theyll use some light materials.
I've used the xplory and the bugaboos for the stairs but its still a huge hassle bumping it up and down or taking my kid out and having to hold the pram with when ive got groceries.
This system is great in the sense you dont have to do anything but just release the sliders !
Im interested to see how much it will retail at ???

It is really unattractive even if it would do stairs! Grin I actually think it looks faffy and I'd rather just use a pushchair with big air tyres that are really easy to bump up/down stairs. I highly doubt this will get into any kind of serious production to be honest.

I think I would be scared of it sliding down the stairs and me behind not being able to control the weight. At least if you are bumping a normal pushchair down the stairs you can pause or readjust. Pushchairs can be seriously heavy when bumping plus the weight is below you, so pulling on your arms IYKWIM.

Like some sort of Baby Tank Hmm

There are definetly some aesthetic problems but on the whole I would be tempted in buying one on condition it isn't heavier than a normal pushchair and 100 percent safe.
Hypatia: I've tried and tested big air tyres , micro light maclarens and xplory for stairs , its ok for a couple of stairs but when you need to go down a 5 story building I promise you its not fun bumping it down and doing your back in !

It does look like some kind of baby tank but that's only when its those sliders are deployed.
My husband likes the baby tank look :-))))

I can't imagine there are that many people who need to go up/down 5 storeys of stairs regularly. Most people would get something like a BJCM and carry the child if there was no lift or it was broken.

I have a strong suspicion this is actually your design and you're doing some covert market research.

My sister lives on an estate in London on the 3rd floor without an elevator with 2 young children.
I don't know why you would ignore all the points I've made and start accusing me of being some fraud , you really prefer to procrastinate.

Its a problem I and a lot of other ladies I know have experienced on a regular basis and I don't appreciate you brushing it under the carpet just like that !

I'd like you to tell us what we should do when theirs no elevator and I'm stuck with my groceries and Baby Jogger at the top of Elephant and Castle underground every day ?? You wouldn't use that escalade concept ?

Sling and a backpack or something like a Combi (Japanese pushchair that has an integral strap and locks closed - they are about 5kg) and a backpack.

I certainly wouldn't use something like that on stairs - I would be frightened of being jostled on a busy staircase (how would it handle spiral staircases like on some of the underground stations?) and losing my grip on it. Some of the stairs are very steep and it's a long way to the bottom if you let go!

You buy a sling, a Quinny Yezz, and a backpack for the shopping :)

The more I think about it, the more terrified I am that I would get pulled down the stairs after it. I can't see it ever getting past the strict UK safety testing - I think Foppapedretti will have enough of a problem getting a pushchair that moves on its own flat ground through safety testing (but I hope they do!) let alone something that moves down stairs!

In answer to your question, no I absolutely would not use this for many reasons. I agree it's unlikely to pass UK regulations and I actually doubt it would work to be honest.

You have done nothing to change my suspicions by the way. :)

My DH has just pointed out how the heck do you get it up stairs (if you are going down them you must go up at some point!) as it must weigh a tonne.....

TS I said the same thing! The OP says they'd buy it if it were no heavier than a normal pushchair, but let's say a normal pushchair was 9-10kg, how the hell do you push that upstairs whilst holding your toddler's hand?! Seriously!

Bridget I also suspect you have something to do with this. For one, the YouTube video was added 2 days ago so if you were a normal non-pushchair industry person you'd be highly unlikely to happen across it the day after it was posted. Secondly, you've never posted on MN before - always a good indicator! And thirdly, why get so upetty about it if you have nothing to do with it?

So seeing as we have decided you have something to do with this, send feedback that it needs to be seriously light, say 5-6kg, needs to handle bends and corners on stairs, needs to not be able to fly down the stairs if you slipped, needs to be a one handed push for those like your, er, sister with 2 children, needs a recline, shopping basket, less crappy wheels... feel free to come back for more feedback.

And the pushchair industry is tough so grow a tough skin for your own safety.

Oh and look up the word "procrastinate".

it looks ridiculous!
it must be really wide too
it has no shopping basket

and totally agree that the weight of the pushchair, plus a child in it would just drag you down the stairs.

just use a bloody sling

I thought Bridget was being amazingly insightful accusing me of procrastinating, but I doubt he/she knew I should be doing some university work. [buwink] Unless she's my Mum?! [buhmm]

i can not see it taking off tbh, people get light weight pushchairs for this sort of thing, maybe read a few of the threads on here and you will very quickly learn what people that live in flats etc really want and buy and why get cross over a youtube clip of a pushchair that has not even been made yet and never will be more than a computer generated program [buconfused] i don't get it, normal people just say hey look at this and thats it????
