What is YOUR buggy quotient?

musttidyupmusttidyup · 14/08/2011 22:51

DH (and DSs and SIL and, in fact, mostly everyone) mercilessly takes the piss out of my buggy obsessions....but I know I'm just a small fish....so...gonna write my buggy train (as I remember it) and invite you to do the same Smile
in my defense (not that I need to defend myself) I have 3 DCs and all my buggies have been needed for various functions at various time, and Ive never had more that 5 at a time.
So.....
Quinny Buzz
Maclaren Quest
Maclaren Techno (1)
Mamas and Papas Pliko
Phil and Teds Sport
Maclaren Techno (2)
Maclaren Triumph
Maclaren Techno (3)
Bebe Confort Loola
Bugaboo Bee

Number of years = 4.3
Number of buggies = 10
Number 0f children = 3

Sooooo

Buggy Quotient = (10/(4.3x3))=0.775 buggies per child per year.
10 divided by (4.3x3)
Acceptable yes????

0.775

Greed. Commercialism gone mad.

I have 3 children. My silvercross travel system has seen me through all of them to about 8 months. With dd1 I switched to a Maclaren Quest. With the other two I switched to a Maclaren techno (the same one for both babies)

That's 3 babies, 3 buggies.

That combination got me through:

Having a car and needing a light buggy for boot.
Not Having a car and needing a buggy small enough for buses, light enough to push everywherer.

Greed Greed. Greed. Greed.

FriggFRIGG · 15/08/2011 08:32

i sell all mine,i hardly ever lose money on them, sometimes i even make a small profit.so in fact not a waste of money.

however,i completely accept i am mad as a box of frogs.Grin

BertieBotts · 15/08/2011 08:37

Only because I like maths - 1. 1.333 if I count the one I never used which got left in a loft somewhere. 0.666 if I don't count the one I bought to replace the one I gave to my ex (I had wanted it in the first place so I figured he could have the boring black one)

MonkeysPunk · 15/08/2011 08:56

Actually, quite often I've made money buying cheap second hand, cleaning up and servicing and selling for profit! On the whole I have actually made money.I currently have three prams in use, a couplfor sale, and the rest are already sold. So maybe not so greedy unless you count making a profit greedy....I think if it as a hobby that makes a little money.

bumpybecky · 15/08/2011 09:05

just worked out mine - 0.15!

have had 5 buggies/prams..

huge graco thing - too big and heavy so stopped using when dd1 was 1
maclaren umbrella fold - wore it out
huge graco tandem pram - needed double, was big but only £5 second hand
2nd maclaren umbrella fold - still in boot of car
urban detour - bought 2nd hand, wore it out
quinny 3xl - freecycle, used for 3 years re-freecycled

so 6 buggies, 4 children, 10 years combined use gives 0.15

I think maybe I'm on the wrong thread!

Tonksforthememories · 15/08/2011 09:17

Graco travel system - sold
Babies r us umberella fold - freecycled
Chicco tandem - sold
Inglesina Zippy - freecycled
Petite star zia - gave to bf
Britax Vigour 4+ - still have, fave but need to sell it!
Inglesina Zippy - bought for £20 and used till it fell apart
Silver cross pop - gave away, hated it
BJCM - possibly the best i've ever had!

3DC
So 9 over 7.8y, not bad going i think! :o

Namechangeoshame · 15/08/2011 09:34

0.16667 - 3 buggies, 2 DC, 9 years (to be fair the last buggy is mostly used for taking the cat to the vet now, only ever used for DCs when they're sick).

You see, what I did, was think about it and buy the right prams in the first place. Have any of you lot considered that approach? Grin

aswellasyou · 15/08/2011 10:08

Why? Becasue there is no perfect pushchair-there's always something it can't do/handle. Because it's fun trying new ones out. Because I always have to have an obsession. And because they're pretty! Grin
Mine haven't been a waste of money at all. All in all, it's cost me £295 and I've currently got three ( a 'proper' pushchair, a stroller and a double). That's less than most people spend on one! I think it's a waste of money having a car or smoking or not bargain hunting, but we all have a choice and I choose to spend my money on baby stuff!

mamadivazback · 15/08/2011 10:10

1.388 - 1 DC, 3.6 Years, 5 pushchairs.

Emmaljunga Cerox - 18 months - Loved it, although not the most practical tank pushchair.
Jane Energy - 5 months too long - Steaming pile of shite on wheels.
M&P 03 Sport - 12 months - Loved it but again but not practical for teeny nursery...
Maclaren XT - 6 weeks - Steaming pile of shite Take 2.
Baby Jogger City Mini - 12 months - Loved it but DS decided he was too big to sit in it full time but too lazy to walk much

In summary I have a hankering for tanks and a dislike for umbrella folds :o

PacificDogwood · 15/08/2011 10:14

You pram addicts are an advertiser's wet dream Grin. And insane.

I had 4 sets of wheels for 4 DC:

Mutsy Urban Rider for PFB.
Out'n'About DoubleNipper when DS2 came along 12 months later.
McLaren Techno - which still serves us well at my parents' house.
McLaren XLR - DS4's current steed.

4 over 8 1/2 years for 4 DCs - about right

Wink
aswellasyou · 15/08/2011 10:14

Actually, I think I wouldn't have started my obsession if it wasn't for my Mum's stupidly small boot! We often need either a teeny tiny double or two small pushchairs but small ones aren't usually comfortable so I wouldn't use it every day. Therefore, I need at least three at all times.Wink

PacificDogwood · 15/08/2011 10:16

Oh sorry, quotient: 0.157

Tiggywunkle · 15/08/2011 10:23

Like, the others, you buy well, look for a bargain, watch and wait and if you buy wisely you shouldn't lose money from a sale and hopefully may even make a profit, especially if new prices increase. It's like a buggy rental system :)
Re the Zapp Xtra. Really quickly. Neat pushchair. The fold is a piglet and you need to try it out. Do it at least three times back to back. My arms still ache in sympathy when I remember doing it. The seat doesn't go in all positions parent facing - I ended up putting my baby forward facing to get the one I wanted. If you want to use the pushchair as a travel system with car seat on then don't buy it. The adaptors are lost far too easily and cost £30 to replace. If you still want one my advice would be buy a second hand well used chassis or regular Zapp, remove the fabric, buy a Zapp Xtra seat unit and put it on top. That way you get an easier to fold chassis but the Xtra seat. If you want a travel system find another cheap chassis (they sell for £50 or less) and stick that in your car. It's cheaper than replacing the pesky adaptors at £30 a shot and being without a pushchair for 6 weeks whilst Dorel work out what you need! I bet you can get to chassis and a seat top for less than a new Zapp Xtra.

fromtheotherside · 15/08/2011 10:29

1 DD
Silver cross Balmoral
Quinny buzz
Maclaren four seasons
Silver cross pop
Silver cross Halo
I have kept the balmoral and buzz for when we have a second baby. The other 3 I have actually made a profit on when I sold.

GloriaVanderbilt · 15/08/2011 10:32

How do you do this? I've had about 55 and have only got two of my own children.

I'm not that good at maths though.

GloriaVanderbilt · 15/08/2011 10:44

8 years x 2 = 16

55/16 = about 3 and a half I think.

aswellasyou · 15/08/2011 11:08

Gloria! 55? Shock I think you win the thread! Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/08/2011 11:22

iCandy Apple
Grey Mac Techno
Babywelt Moon Kiss
M&P Luna
Bugaboo Bee
Black Mac Techno
Bugaboo Bee
Silver Cross Pop

Number of years = 3.7
Number of buggies = 8
Number 0f children = 1

0.46 buggies per child per year.

But my maths is shite so it might be wrong.

GloriaVanderbilt · 15/08/2011 12:29

GrinBlush I would write a list but not sure I can remember them all.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 15/08/2011 13:29

Right. For those not sure multiply the no of years you've owned buggies by the number of dc's you have. Then divide the no of buggies you've owned by this number. The smaller the number the more buggy savvy you've been!
Re the 'greedy' comment.... How does someone manage to get offensive on a fun thread like this??Confused
As others have said... Buy second hand and sell on / pass on when finished. Bough 2 of mine new, the p&t and techno and both worth every penny. Smile

bunnynose · 15/08/2011 13:54

My quotient is 3 for 1 DC over 3 years.

I've had 9 in total which are:

M&P pram (2nd hand from ebay) - bought while pregnant having know idea about prams. Taken to charity shop after 1st outing with newborn as heavy and hard to steer.

M&P buggy (2nd hand from ebay) - again bought while pregnant and sold to friend who couldn't afford a new buggy.

Graco Mosaic - biggest waste of money ever! Rubbish quality & terrible brakes. Sold at bootfair after noone bought it on ebay.

Bebe Confort Loola - bought to keep lo rearfacing, but was heavy and awkward getting up kerbs. Lo didn't like rearfacing after a while as was too laid back. Sold on ebay for only £20 less than I paid for it.

Maclaren Techno XT - had this for about a year. Lo was uncomfortable by 15 months old as her head was over the seat back. Think I also damaged it in the snow as it never steered straight again! Sold to a shop on ebay.

BJCM - the best buggy ever! I have had it for well over a year and have used it so much it's just about worn out. The handle rubber has split, I've worn the wheels down so much I am starting to see the wheel rim through the rubber and it creaks quite loudly with the weigh of my daughter! But I love it and have walked miles with it and still use it most of the time.

Urban Detour - bought of ebay as BJCM not good for off roading & snow!

Maclaren Quest - 2nd hand of ebay. Didn't like it and resold 2 weeks later for more than I bought it for.

BJ City Elite - my latest purchase. All Terrain big brother to the BJCM. Bought for country walks, snow etc to replace the Urban Detour I'm about to sell.

The most buggies I've had in anyone time is 3, but my Maclaren techno was my only buggy for about 6 months, which was then replaced by the BJCM as my only buggy again for 10 months. Only started looking at offroaders after moving from the City to the country.

Tiggywunkle · 15/08/2011 14:23

Bunnynose - phone Kooltrade up and ask for replacement wheels etc. Baby Jogger products have a lifetime warranty on everything except the fabrics. They will ask for the chassis number and they may have the parts in, or you may need to wait for the next shipment. I don't know if the handlebar will come under fabrics or even if you can fit a new one, but you can only ask :)

bunnynose · 15/08/2011 16:31

Thanks Tiggy, I will give them a call. I just assumed they would charge for a new set of wheels. When I took it to a pram shop they thought the creaking was coming from the wheels as well. Sprayed them loads of times with silicone spray, but the creak comes back after a few days. My handle currently has a makeshift repair with tennis racket grip, so will be great if they can repair it.

saoirse86 · 15/08/2011 18:30

Ooh, how exciting. Here's my list (with prices bought/sold to attempt to not look "greedy", "an advertiser's wet dream" or succombing to "commercialism gone mad". Grin

M&P 03 Sport - Bought: £30, Sold £25
Mothercare Urban Detour - Bought Freecycle, Sold Freecycle
Quinny Zapp - Bought £20, Sold £37.50
Quinny Buzz - Bought £55, Sold £110
Maclaren Twin Traveller - Bought £21, Sold £46
Babystyle Oyster - Bought £215, kept
Quinny Zapp (2) - Bought £95, kept
Jane Powertwin - Bought £100, sold £160
Ziko Frankie - Bought £25, Sold £40
Kolcraft Contours - Bought £150, will sell soon to buy B-Dual

So that's £711 spent, £418.50 back, so £292.50 outlayed... so far...

So I have one DD who's nearly 11 months, 10 pushchairs (doubles are for use with my niece and DD), so my quotient is 11.16, I have a long way to go to catch up with suzie and Gloria! Wink

musttidyupmusttidyup · 15/08/2011 20:37

Omg soairse86 that's some going in 11 months... Check again in 5 yes or so but if you continue to follow your current trend you may be the winner! Grin
