Is this beautiful or naff beyond words?

this

Its for the hallway of our new house, which is very light and quite large, and I have this vision of a dramatic ceiling light as the focal point. With soft cream walls and wooden floor.

But it is entirely possible, as this home refurbishing and redecorating thing is completely new to me, that I have no taste whatsoever.

Please advise!

I think it's lovely.

WinnieCooper · 27/05/2010 16:31

Lovely and the overall scheme sounds gorgeous!

notasize10yetbutoneday · 27/05/2010 16:34

Really? Thank you so much! I have no confidence at all in my design/style abilities and it really feels like we have bitten off more than we can chew (moving from new build 2-bed semi to older 4 bedroom house which needs complete refurbishment including 2 bathrooms), so thats really nice to here.

Once we move in I will be driving everyone on this board crazy with constant 'what do you think of this' posts!

Well, it would look ridiculous in OUR hallway, but beautiful it isnt. Not in my opinion at least. Maybe it would be suitable in a shabby chic bedroom.

I love this one kongle

Well, actually, if it is a period property, it might be nice.

I like more modern lighting, to be honest.
And from the John Lewis website, I think I would chose either of these:

galaxy
or
rosetta if I wanted to err on the side of traditional (in a modern sort of way)

QSnondomicile · 27/05/2010 16:41

But I would also make sure I could use low energy lightbulbs!

happyland · 27/05/2010 16:43

Really nice, and it seems like it will suit the space quite well!

notasize10yetbutoneday · 27/05/2010 16:45

Oh QS I actually really like the galaxy one! Actually I think thats what I had in my head...one with glass 'bits' coming down, to create a focal point.

The house was built in the 70s so not period but the hallway has a period 'feel' to it because of the high cieling, and I want to keep it quite traditional I think.

Love this

So expensive but with 20% off...

orienteerer · 27/05/2010 16:57

Hmm, would not be my choice to be honest, especially in 70's house.

orienteerer · 27/05/2010 16:58

Sorry, was referring to the original link not most recent.

Granny23 · 27/05/2010 16:59

Sorry but I do not like the original one at all - so fussy and imagine cleaning it. I adore QS's kongle one - real statement piece.

QSnondomicile · 27/05/2010 17:15

Granny, you are right about the lamp being a statement, it is over 5k, I just found it on this website, it is actually called Artichoke in English.

A bit out of the budget for most.....

minipie · 27/05/2010 17:29

Being honest, OP, I wouldn't put that chandelier in a 1970s house... just a bit too "fake Victorian" if you see what I mean. I would go for something simpler.

Also, the metal is a bit shiny for me (can you tell I'm quite picky )

There are some lovely options on here that are period-y but simpler:

Perhaps this, or this. I really like this but as description says may be more suited for over a table.

SixtyFootDoll · 27/05/2010 18:08

Op I think the one you linked to is a bit old fashioned.

HerHonesty · 27/05/2010 19:32

its too fake for my liking so a bit naff. but i think the look you are going for is fine given you are in a period property but i think the light is not right.

brennannbooth · 27/05/2010 19:34

Check your ceiling and fitting reqs 1st though, don't do anything to make it nonreturnable until you are absolutely sure you can put it up in your house. I've been burnt like this before!

DukesOfTripHazard · 27/05/2010 20:16

I think that third ikea one would look fine in a hall.

notasize10yetbutoneday · 28/05/2010 08:15

Thanks for the links, I really like the second ikea one. We haven't even moved in yet so plenty of time to decide which one to get! I have gone off the original one now I've seen what else is on offer.

MmeLindt · 28/05/2010 08:40

I would go for something like this or this

This one is fab and you cannot go wrong with Ingo Maurer for a statement lamp.

QSnondomicile · 28/05/2010 08:42

That ikea one is not going to give a lot of light for a hallway. It has only one bulb.

The third Ikea one is very plasticy, we have the first as a table lamp.

MrsMills · 28/05/2010 08:51

and the second IKEA shade is mahoosive in real life.

warthog · 28/05/2010 08:57

i think your link in your op is still the best. as long as everything else is very simple i think it will work really well.
