What have you got on your bathroom floor?

mistressploppy · 17/05/2010 09:51

We're doing our bathrooms up (tiny downstairs loo, proper bathroom and ensuite). They have carpet at the moment. DH is worried that our ensuite will be cold on his tootsies without carpet - I think it's unhygienic...

Decor to be pretty neutral; modernish but not cutting edge.

Any recommendations in particular?

Thanks!

We have tiles but considered lino as that is a bit warmer underfoot. You could always get underfloor heating if it bothers him that much (or a pair of slippers!)

I have 2 small boys, I don't want to think about how disgusting a carpet in the bathroom would be.

Spidermama · 17/05/2010 09:57

I love rubber tiles and am intending to get those when I do up the bathroom.

TrinityMeemaRhino · 17/05/2010 09:58

clothes, rubbish, toys....

CMOTdibbler · 17/05/2010 09:59

We've got tiles - it's not cold underfoot really, but some of our hot pipes go under the floor, so cheap underfloor heating !
Have just had Karndean put downstairs though, and it's warm to the foot, even though it's on concrete

Poledra · 17/05/2010 10:00

Thanks to DH introducing the DDs to it the other week, an inch-thick layer of talcum powder.......

BendyBob · 17/05/2010 10:01

We've always had carpet but it's not really what I'd like. I think it is manky tbh. I'd prefer tiles or even better wooden flooring given the choice.

ShinyAndNew · 17/05/2010 10:02

We have matt black tiles. Do not get matt black tiles. They are impossible to get clean and when you manage the impossible, it is even more impossible to keep them looking clean for longer than 30 seconds. My kitchen/bathroom were cleaned yesterday, it looks like it has not been mopped in months

It's not particularly cold underfoot though.

Thinking about the state the tiles get into and the colour of water after daily mopping I shudder to think what germs/dirt etc would be hidden in carpet.

We have got lino....now hang on before you turn your nose up...... we got it because:

  1. It is hygienic, one wipe and its done.(small kids)
  2. We put some underlay so its warm to touch
  3. It is REALLY nice, it matches the bathroom
  4. It is very temproary and easily ripped up and replaced if you get fed up/change decor etc
  5. It was cheaper that tiles/carpet.
  6. DH fitted it himself with a stanly knife and a pair of scissors.....looks fab.
  7. It has lasted about 3 years so far, will keep it till we do the bathrom up next.

I would recommend it becasue it is just soe asy with little kids to cater for in the bathroom dept....plus you dont get too attached to it like you do tiles with are expensive and perminant.

mistressploppy · 17/05/2010 10:12

Thanks everyone (esp Trinity )

PFB DS is 7mo so good point re the manky carpet, Potplant Shiny, we have black kitchen worktops and they are a PAIN, alway look grubby even when just wiped, I wish someone had warned me...

Am leaning towards lino but have just discovered Karndean so am getting a brochure sent.

Anyone got cork tiles?

Linnet · 17/05/2010 10:14

We have vinyl.

AMumInScotland · 17/05/2010 10:15

Lino - well, soft cushionfloor vinyl to be precise. It's fairly warm underfoot. We also have a washable bathmat and loo-shaped mat, which can go into the machine at high temperature to keep them nice and hygenic.

BettyButterknife · 17/05/2010 10:20

We've got a painted wood floor. I can recommend Farrow & Ball Charleston Grey - it's the perfect shade between light and dark that hides a multiple of sins

trumpton · 17/05/2010 10:20

Karndean been down 10 years as good as new.

Lionstar · 17/05/2010 10:23

Please DON'T get carpet, when we replaced ours a couple of years ago it was RANK underneath, and that was pre-DC (). We have tiles now with electric underfloor heating - just in the bathroom on a timer. That said we all tend to wear slippers so don't notice cold floors.

My Mum had cork tiles, and whilst they were warm they can also suffer the 'soaking' problem if not well sealed. She had to get hers replaced as they had started to curl up at the corners after a few wet floor incidents (not unusual in a bathroom surely?)

ChippingIn · 17/05/2010 11:28

CMOTdibbler/trumpton - what 'style' of Karndean do you have? Does it look/feel like lino/vinyl?

I need to get both the bathroom & kitchen done in the flat - both are small areas so not really suitable for underfloor heating (really, honestly, tooooo small), I have been thinking about tiles - but am prepared to be swayed

Lionstar · 17/05/2010 11:31

Our bathroom is tiny too, but DP fitted the electric underfloor heating in. It is like thin layers of conductive sheeting that goes beneath the tiles, takes up hardly any room - nothing like the pipe stuff. Then there is a control/thermostat thing on the wall to control it.

leothelioness · 17/05/2010 11:37

We have tiles. When we bought our house it had carpet, when we pulled it was it was absolutely disgusting underneath so I am glad it was one of the first thing we got rid of when we moved in.

CMOTdibbler · 17/05/2010 11:44

ChippingIn - we have Macrocapra (wood effect) in the sitting room/hall/dining room and Orkney Stone in the kitchen with strips inbetween to make it look like granite pavers and grout. It doesn't feel soft, and several visitors have thought that it is wood and stone respectively

I'm just about to put a bamboo floor down in my bathroom

ChippingIn · 17/05/2010 11:57

Lionstar - yeah, I have seen lots of the stuff, I didn't mean it was too small in the sense that there wasn't room for it, just that it barely seems worth it - I think the flat's bathroom will only have about 1 square meter of floor that you'd actually stand on!!

CMOT - thanks, I think I'll get some samples sent out

CMOTdibbler · 17/05/2010 12:02

If you are near enough, Karndean have a humugous showroom in Evesham, with all the different patterns laid down and on big sheets. They will give you loads of samples to take home too

ButterflyEmma · 17/05/2010 12:09

Cushioned vinyl here - DH fitted it.

Its warm, wipe clean and practical! Can get it in lots of different styles.

ChippingIn · 17/05/2010 12:58

CMOT - thanks for that, sadly it's a couple of hours drive from home. Mind you, the bathroom & kitchen in the flat are so small, if I go up and get some samples I might not need to buy any

twolittledarlings · 17/05/2010 22:04

We had porcelain in cream/white put down in our nw bathroom last year and its so nice and bright and very easy to clean that in our so to be new house, we have chosen the same porcelain tiles, also the same suite and decor in all the bathrooms.

The tiles do not feel cold underfoot, maybe because the central heating is always on.

Can recommended. The range is Calisto - Ivory Blanc
