or do you find it sacred?

No

I love my utility room. Partly it's the fact that you can shut the door on the noise of the washing machine/tumble dryer. But also I use that room to make a mess in, e.g. wash hands in the sink in there when coming in all muddy from the garden, and similarly discard wellies etc in there. And also use sink in there for washing paintbrushes etc - I'd hate to have to do that in the same sink that I use to prepare food (in the kitchen). And the utility room gets used a lot at Christmas etc to store the extra huge quantities of booze food.

no
and why aren't utility rooms upstairs

I feckin hate carting everything up and down the stairs

For me a dinning table in the kitchen is essential so I would loose a utility room for a dinning table but not just for more space.

my heart is really wanting to disagree with you all, but my head knows you're right. back to the drawing board. OUr utility room is very well used - recycling, laundry, dog bowls, coats etc, so i guess thats a lot of mess to redistribute. but a bigger kitchen would be SO nice

already got dining table in kitchen, so it would purely be for more space

no way - it has a mopuntain of ironing in it - i would not want all my laundry in the kitchen.

Bonsoir · 19/01/2010 07:57

I would happily rejig my apartment to knock the room that now houses my washing machine, dryer and fridge into my kitchen to make really big kitchen; and then I would make one of my loos into the laundry room, and soundproof it, so that I cannot hear my washing machine (my bugbear at the moment) and then put a new loo in near the bedrooms. Ho hum.

Our old house had a galley kitchen, tiny table for two and great utility room.

Our new house has a kithen-diner-morning room, so space for huge table, sofa area etc......how i miss my utility room Have bought 'quiet' washing machine and dishwasher but you can still hear them. As for storing laundry/ironing its a right pain. Tumble dryer (ok so shoot me now!) is the worst and i have to wait til night or we go out to use it for the noise! We have a good sized victorian house with all the space and more a family of (soon to be) 5 could possible need.....and I would kill for a my little old utility room!!!!!!

I have a massive kitchen breakfast room (26ft) and no utility room and I absolutely love it. We have doors into the garden. Yes a utility room would be nice, but I'd rather have my lovely big kitchen instead. We have plenty of cupboard space for storing everything people have mentioned. Dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer are in the kitchen and I don't find it a problem at all. We don't live a country lifestyle so muddy wellies aren't a problem, and coats are stored in the porch, laundry basket upstairs in our room. I guess if you can discreetly house your utilty room contents elsewhere then it could be right for you?

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 19/01/2010 08:50

Where would you eat your chocolate biscuits?

I'm now thinking about maybe taking a small bit of our lounge for a utility, and thereby having the best of both worlds. BUT - it may be a pain to plumb, so not sure how possible it would be , let alone how much it would cost. oh well..

Similar dilemma here, as the utility is the sunniest spot in the house and it would be a great place for the kitchen table. I'd find space for washing machine & tumble dryer upstairs (in redundant airing cupboard), invest in a fancy boot rack for the wellies, and take recycling straight outside to the bin

MummyTumble · 19/01/2010 15:37

ooohh - washing machine and dryer upstairs would be fab! didn't old houses used to be like that? makes sense...

skinsl · 20/01/2010 14:09

i so want a utility room, don't get rid of it

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 20/01/2010 14:12

isn't it called a Futility room?

No. Don't get rid of it, you'll definitely regret it.
