FFS

She rang me to tell me they'd been around it (outside - it's empty) and IN the farking garage.

"well the garden's not as big as I thought"
"the garage window needs replacing"
"the garden in the house opposite is a bit scruffy"

FUCK OFF! FUCK OFF! FUCK OFF!!!

We didn't ASK them to do it, DH is a builder and is more than capable of noting that a garage-fucking-window needs replacing

and who gives a SHITE that a neighbour's garden is scruffy? Who fucking CARES

AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

They are so fucking NEGATIVE

oh, how mortifying

waitingforbedtime · 26/11/2009 10:16

When we were buying our house MIL took her neighbours and dh's aunties to have a look around. We got the comments too...

MamaG · 27/11/2009 07:45

lol at taking her neighbours, that's even worse! I spoke to MIL last night and It Was Not Mentioned

I think my snippiness in initial convo got hte message across and she'll just brush it under the carpet now.

DH (seriously) wants us to tell her we're moving in the day AFTER we actuallky are, so she won't be there are 9am with a flask

Flask of tea or flask of vodka?

bran · 27/11/2009 08:38

I agree with your DH, but I would allow a week rather than a day to get settled in. Or perhaps a month? A year even?

WinkyWinkola · 27/11/2009 10:34

I know what you mean about fibbing about the day you move in.

I had my PIL around the day after we moved in. They'd come for lunch and I could really have done without any visitors and their needs for a few days until we'd got a bit more settled. Heigh ho.

rebl · 27/11/2009 11:44

PMSL MamaG at your friend.

MamaG · 28/11/2009 07:42

noooooooo winky don't say that! I still snigger everytime I think of friend (well, I don't PICTURE it, I try not to any way)

That's the kind of thing my Mum might do but she wouldn't ADMIT it!!! she'd do it, but be ashamed enough about it to stay quiet!!! until accidentally letting it slip.

So, I can't believe they did it and think it's NORMAL

moondog · 28/11/2009 20:35

Mama, why on earth are you moving closer to your MIL?

MaggieBelle · 28/11/2009 20:39

Some people are funny, lol at secondcoming's friend admitting that she'd been to view the house you'd had an offer accepted on.

I'm not usually stuck for words but that's the sort of thing that would do it!

MamaG · 30/11/2009 10:15

moondog - I asked myself that Q last night.

There are so many things about the area which are perfect for us - schools are good, we've got a better house/garden for less £ than we sold this house, swimming pool, cinema, shops all within walking distance etc, easy for us to commute to Leeds/York/Harrogate etc etc and MIL living there is a bit of a PITA but we love the area so much, we are prepared to deal with that.

We've just spent the weekend with them and they did drive me a bit demented, but I'm thinking that although we will see them more often, it will only be for an hour or so, whereas now it's 2 full days and an overnight stay (scratches eyes out) as it's too far for a day's visit.

OP posts:
BloodRedTulips · 30/11/2009 10:47

there's a great line in Everybody loves raymond where he describes the perfect distance away from parents 'too far to just pop in but not so far that they have to stay overnight when they visit'

those were our criteria when house hunting closer to my parents (despite my mothers best efforts to convince us that the tiny cottage near them would be prefect ) and god am i glad now!

good luck, make sure you stock up on gin before the move

MadameDuBain · 30/11/2009 10:55

MamaG is is true that if annoying rellies are close at hand, at least they don't actually tend to stay overnight. Small crumb of sanity for you.

But I had to laugh at this bit of your OP:

"FUCK OFF! FUCK OFF! FUCK OFF!!!"

as that is exactly what rings around in my head whenever on the phone/reading emails from various of my relatives. I then put the phone down and shout it out loud

ChloeHandbag · 30/11/2009 10:58

MamaG - I'm about to so the same thing except we'll be 20 mins away and are currently at the other end of the country. DH and I are 'training' MIL at the moment. For example a couple of weeks ago I mentioned that we had some reservations about the standard of the kitchen in new house. The following few days she left loads of messages on my mobile & landline and dh's mobile all asking what was going on, are we still going ahead, what was happening about schools etc etc. DH called back and said he was very worried as she'd been leaving messages everywhere, where she and FIL ok? It made her realised she was being ott.

Prunerz · 30/11/2009 11:03

I have just remembered that my MIL did that when we bought this place!
I was pissed off at the time. It's pretty off.
But...free country and all that. I know MIL did it because she is interested and a total control freak

nickschick · 30/11/2009 11:07

We used to live next door to my inlaws it was horrid lol shed bang on the wall for dh to go straight round ....shed ring up and ask what i was laughing at - she might come round 6-7 times in 1 day - she used to get cross if i shut the door and put the latch down ....not a good idea to live that close to the inlaws imo.
