Where to buy a house near Birmingham?

FreddoBaggyMac · 04/09/2009 15:27

We have just found out that DH's job is moving to Birmingham and the likelihood is we're going to have to move pretty quickly - before the end of the year. It's going to be hard for us as we have four small children (all under 6)and no family or friends around there and we don't know the area at all, and also DD1 is really settled at her primary school here which is just a few minutes walk from our house...

Anyway, we need to look to the future and I'd be really grateful for any advice anyone can give me about buying a house in that area. Which areas are good, which to avoid etc... we have no idea at all as we've never even been there.

We basically want to be in a nice area for our DCs to grow up in and as short a commute to Birmingham as possible for DH. We need three bedrooms and a study and would like a garden. Most important, we need to be walking distance to a good Catholic primary school. We prefer older style properties (Victorian or earlier) but we need somewhere that doesn't require any renovation (or preferably even decorating!) as we just won't have the time for at least five years! Our budget is going to be around £250k.

Have heard that Bournville is nice - but there seems to be lots of areas within Bournville, I think Bournville village is going to be too expensive for us. Have also heard good things about Edgbaston, Harborne and Moseley - but again I suppose all of these places have good and bad areas within them... Have also thought about living further out (Whitwick, Malvern?) but perhaps the commuting time would be too long?

I'd be completely grateful for any advice from anyone as we're really stuck - we're not even going to have much opportunity to go and look at houses as we'll need to move quickly and have our DCs to consider (not easy to househunt trailing 4 DCs behind you!)
If anyone could provide me with links to houses for sale that might be suitable for us I'd be eternally grateful!!

Thank you in advance.

haha number 9 bus - who mentioned that?

pwei 'on the satisfaction stakes its like sitting on the number 9 bus' jumps to mind. What was that song 'welcome to heeeeellllll'

cannock / athersone - mway links and train from cannock. Really feels fokkall like birmingham. Prob about 40 mins commute

cannock chase is brilliant

I wouldn't opt to live there - nor bromsgrove. But then again, I like brum. I like living in a city. I don't hanker after somewhere rural and don't see me in the sorta place where they kick pig lungs round the street on a bank holiday (that's atherstone that is)

Have you sat down and prioritised what you are wanting most? Think its sounding like a longer commute for dh isn't a dealbreaker for you and prob is the compromise you are looking for

FreddoBaggyMac · 08/09/2009 19:56

Found it and yes it does look v. nice. We'd need somewhere for DH to have a study which it doesn't have but you have shown that there may be something in that area for us I like the garden.

Leonie - I promise I'm not out to upset anyone. I hope to make a Midlands meet up one of these days and don't want to be pelted with eggs .

I agree that Kidderminster and Bromsgrove are definitely not ideal if commuting is one of the main priorities (I wasn't the one bigging those up at all). I think there are places with easier/shorter commutes which are nicer (i.e. Norton, Bournville, Harborne etc.)

Tillyscoutsmum · 08/09/2009 20:00

Masonic - I agree the Number 9 bus is no fun but frankly, I'd rather stick cocktail sticks in my eyes than travel on any West Midlands Travel bus. Hell indeed

ooh looksee

Tillyscoutsmum · 08/09/2009 20:09

Cannock - one of the most depressing places on earth. I really dislike it. Transport links are dodgy - commute by road is bad (M6 Junction 12-7 probably the most congested bit of m-way in the UK - albeit slightly better now we have toll road). Flat, dull and uninspiring. Lichfield much better bet

Atherstone - quite pretty but slightly "yokel" market town (think sort of Gainsborough if you know it). Train links crap again

Alcester is similar feel but not quite as weird ..... think there may be a catholic primary there ??

Hi FreddoBaggyMac, are you still thinking of Leamington Spa? I've lived here for 20 years now and love it. Don't know a thing about Catholic primary schools, whether they're any good or not. You posted earlier about a house on Manor Road, someone else said it was not in Leamington but in Harbury? There is a Manor Road in L/Spa, it is wallkable to the town centre although a bit far for my tastes. It is quite a nice area, a friend used to live there. If you have anything you want to ask about the toen feel free, I'll do my best.

Lizzylou · 08/09/2009 20:14

Alecester has a catholic primary and (I think) a Catholic High School St Benedicts, though it has an excellent Grammar school so St B's never used to have a good name.

Honestly? I wouldn't want to live there and I think the commute would be hellish tbh. V nicely situated for lovely countryside etc but every person I ever met who went to the Grammar school fled to Uni and never came back. A bit Betwixt and between.

Lizzylou · 08/09/2009 20:14

Alcester sorry

Lizzylou · 08/09/2009 20:15

Gawd yes, M6/M5 junction and environs is hell on earth, I loathe travelling down to visit my family.

WhereYouLeftIt · 08/09/2009 20:19

toen = town

Leonie - I agree you are doing a great job as an honorary Brummie - they are a fiercely jingoistic bunch

I'm not from any of the places mentioned either but I wouldn't dream of recommending where I'm from originally - its a right shit hole
