Would anyone be kind enough to vote on which of my shortlist for the new kitchen floor I should get?

Here are the three choices. Pictures of the unfinished kitchen are on my profile. High gloss white cupboards, walnut worktop, I think we are going for a kiwi green wall tile as a splashback. Need to decide soon as just want it finished...and the fitter is waiting in the wings.

classic pale stone

This is fairly mottled so good for disguising crumbs? also quite light coloured.

limestone cool

This one is very nice but very plain and pale, worried about the dirt showing...

sienna slate

This one is a good brown to go with the worktops, mid coloured and nicely mottled and textured so maybe would hide the crumbs a bit?

Arghh the is too difficult... I am wrestling with appearance v practialities

Any advice and opinions welcome.

Sienna slate.

Yes, the limestone does show stains / crumbs / muddy pawprints. Not too bad, but enough to be somewhat irritating.

cheapskatemum · 29/08/2009 21:57

When people talk about darker kitchen floors hiding the dirt a bit, I'm reminded of the French & Saunders sketch when she crunches across the kitchen floor because it's so filthy, but it's camouflaged by the shade of it, lol!

andirobobo · 29/08/2009 22:33

Another vote for the sienna slate here!!

KristinaM · 29/08/2009 22:45

kitchen is fab cece, your hard work is paying off

the very light amtico tiles will need mopped every day, especially if you have kids coming in the back door from the garden

we had cream tiles in our last kitchen and they were a nightmare

personally i woudl go fo a mottled slate grey colour, rather than the brown but that's just me

I know you are not asking for opinions on your wall tiles , but i will give mine anyway . if you love the lime green colour i woudl go for glass instead of the tiles, i think they are too traditional for your kitchen

Heated · 29/08/2009 22:53

Jmo, I'd go for the darker colour, because, apart from cleaning practicalities, it will give a better contrast against the white gloss units which look fab.

A bigger picture of the laid sienna slate here although personally not convinced by white spacers but I do this look with the paler tile against white units is not so great.

Is there any other dark tile under consideration that goes well with work top and rest of flooring downstairs?

Heated · 29/08/2009 22:55

or even here, I hope! (sienna slate)

Heated · 29/08/2009 22:58

Right, it won't blooming well link, but click on bottom left thumbnail for sienna slate and 4th row down, 3rd one across for white units/light floor contrast.

KristinaM · 29/08/2009 23:03

heated you are very wise

lucykate · 29/08/2009 23:10

i'd vote for the sienna too. it'll look lovely, very similar colour wise to our old kitchen at our old house. we didn't have green tiles but we did paint one wall a similar retro green.

cece · 29/08/2009 23:17

Heated, thanks for the tips. We did consider fired slate

The sample we have though is darker than it looks online. Also the brown isn't such a good match to the worktop. (tone wise - not looking for an exact match iyswim)

is ceramic chocolate too dark for you? it might be too similar to the worktops.........

noddyholder · 29/08/2009 23:25

I have a very similar kitchen and have tiles and they do look modern.Glass tiles are lovely too but will date.

cece · 29/08/2009 23:29

I also have a sample of ceramic chocolate here I think I must have most of the spacia tile range here!

DH thinks it is too dark but I don't dislike it.

The tiles are the same colour green as a kiwi (hence the name I suppose), so not really lime green. I agree; think glass tiles will date and will also be too expensive! I can be persuaded away from the green. I also have a sample of the duck egg blue in the same range, which I like a bit more but DH not keen on it "too wishy washy".

yeah, but at £50++ a square meter you dont want soemthing that you " don't dislike". You need to absolutely LURVE it. My kitchen floor is the nicest thing in it( apart from Dh at the kitchen sink of course).

You have a lovely big room and the flooring will be a big part of how it looks. get something WONDERFUL

KristinaM · 29/08/2009 23:49

what about basalt ?

cece · 30/08/2009 09:54

Funnily enough Kristina I have that sample as well. I decided against it as it felt thinner plus it looked shiny and fake iyswim.

The ceramic chocolate is very nice. In your photos the kitchen looks quite cool-toned (well it does on my monitor anyway!) so I think the chocolate would be a good match.

cece · 30/08/2009 15:56

OK ceramic chocolate now back down on the floor! Also a more grey slate tile charcoal slate

OP posts:
noddyholder · 30/08/2009 16:08

I have a grey slate floor and a v similar kitchen

fanjolina · 30/08/2009 16:37

I think the Fired Slate will go really well.

KristinaM · 30/08/2009 17:55

charcoal slate looks lovely and a more practical colour than the paler tiles. how is it with your wall colour? on my monitor natural hessian looks more brown than neutral, but paint colours totally change on the wall

i bet the slate is fab with your dark wood worktops

cece · 30/08/2009 20:57

Natural hessian is quite beige, almost the same colour as the plaster but not quite as pink.

The charcoal slate is quite a blue grey, so although I would love a slate look I am not sure whether it will be too blue. It does look nice at night with the lights on.

For those of you who are interested I think
I have decided on warm stone for the tile and concrete putty for the grout lines.

I know this is not one of the initial choices but think this is the one which I will be happiest with for longest!

Thanks for all of your help.

Lovely choices

KristinaM · 03/09/2009 22:17

I'm interested of course .

the enlarged photo of warm stone shows lots of pattern and colour variation, which i think will be much easier to keep clean than the flat plainer ones like limestone. and its quite a bit warmer too

do post more photos when its laid
