Bungalows

DH & I have never really been taken with bungalows but one has come on the market today & it looks really lovely. I just think of bungalows as being for old people - what do you think? I am wondering whether we should go view it to see how we feel.....

It's only a house with no upstairs, what's not to like?

...that mainly retired people live in them? Only my opinion so really do not mean to offend anyone. Thanks

Thanks for all of the replies so far - does anyone else think having all of the living/sleeping areas on one floor makes it harder to hear if there are any intruders in the house? Or is it just me being such a worrier???

we live in one and it's brilliant! going to really miss it when we have to leave.

We moved in to ours in December and I love it. The kids are able to move freely from their bedrooms to the playroom and they love running around. I think it's great for a family.

And our old house was a grantite house and we'd never have heard intruders downstairs. Now that we're on one floor the one drawback is that the kids can hear if we've people over and make too much noise.

Thanks for easing my mind about security issues. DH is still not keen as it only has 1 reception room but both this room & the kitchen/family room are massive rooms. I doubt we will view tbh.

Sarah beeney mentioned bungalows on property ladder this week and IIRC she said they were in high demand as the population was ageing but they were rarely built anymore, only something like 300 built last year and lots of older ones had been converted into houses. Apparently it was one area of the housing market that had held its value.

That is gorgeous and I hate you for even being able to consider it! There is nothing old fogey about it at all. Would love that kitchen and bathroom.

Look at the size of that garden!!! I would have no issues with a bungalow, on bigger plots so larger gardens generally and you can swap rooms around downstairs very easily.

You can't make a bedroom into a dining room in a normal house.

Just make sure there is an alarm and security lighting if you are worried about the intruder issue.

Cripes you are all selling it to me. I agree that it is not your typical old fogey bungalow, it is more villa like (so my sister says who lives in NZ). I am going to forward this link to my DH so he can read all of the replies & then we can decide whether or not to view. Another concern of mine is that in summer we have our bedroom window wide open at night - couldn't do that in a bungalow

funny you mention the open window problem, I was looking at window restrictors today so I can have the kids windows open to let the breeze in but not so much they can get out. They might be handy if you do end up in a bungalow.

In the US its called lateral living !I renovated one a few years ago and it came out brilliant.can be really big plots and brilliant for open plan

Since I used to live in Italy, I have no prejudice against bungalows, I'd buy one. The only thing is that it seems quite pricey. I can see the decorating/fixtures are quite good, though. I'd research the area to see what similar properties sell for. I have come across lots of houses (during our long-running househunt through different counties)where the sellers want you to pay a lot just for the finish. Of course, if you love their decor, there is no problem there.

Forgot to comment on your window concern, well in Italy all lower floor windows have bars. They are lovely, curly, wrought iron ones (not prison type) I find it strange that over here people are not as security conscious.

DH & I have talked about it & really do not think it will work for us. I am such a worrier regarding security & am on edge in the evenings when we have the window open upstairs in DS bedroom. The security grills are an option but I wouldn't want them & even though you can fit window restrictors I am feeling uneasy about them. All in all it is not for us but it does look lovely!!
