Moving to Skegness

Hello all,

Anyone got any experience of living in Skegness? What are the good areas, etc, etc? Where to find good nurseries?

Relocating and cannot think of what I need to remember. Can only think house, nursery, doctors, what should I not forget to do???

Thanks
Shell

i don't live there now but know the town reasonably well. There are some areas i would avoid (Alexandra Rd for example), there are good nurseries (don't use one myself but could probably ask friends for recommendations)good sized GP practice, small cottage hospital with an A&E dept which has been fab the couple of times i had to take DS. A Sure Start centre with lots of stuff on, some good play areas for the kids and decent shopping facilites.

I only know the areas that are notoriously bad to to live in, so i guess the rest are ok. You looking to buy or rent?

queenrollo · 16/05/2009 11:13

sorry have hyper ds here.

Ask away and i'll help if i can. There are some roads which get very busy in summer and so living the wrong end of them can mean taking ages to drive into town (and of course back home again)....things like that i can talk over with you. I grew up 13 miles away but visited relatives every week and then lived in the town itself for 7 years. Pop back every week to pick up ds from his dad's who lives just outside Skeg.

ShellySara · 16/05/2009 21:04

Thanks for that info.

My first question is: how do I find a house for rent in the Town?

I think I would like a house as there is myself and my 1 year old daughter who loves to go outside - she would live outside if she could I think - and I would really like a garden. However, it is very difficult finding a house or even a flat to rent. Do people advertise in newsagent/post office windows there, or is there really such little in the way of renting somewhere?

I do drive, but if I live in the town then it is likely I would cycle (and trailer) rather than car it to work everyday. I saw the traffic during the school run on the A52 there!!

If you could please tell me the areas that are particularly dodgy, that would sure be helpful.

I have called a couple of nurseries, and surprisingly they have vacancies for a 1 year old, so they have sent prospectuses, etc. One of these nurseries was at the SureStart Centre. There is one of those in the town I am at currently and they are great, have loads of things to do, and on the occasions that I have left DD at the afternoon creche, she has been well taken care of and seemed to enjoy herself.

I cant think of much else right now, I know there will come a time soon when I need to know a lot more, but finding somewhere to live and a nursery are the main things right now.

Many thanks
Shelly

the local papers tend to have properties advertised in them too. Where are you now (roughly)? Can you get the local Skeg papers?

When i was looking for somewhere i had to register with local agents, some of who charged a fee. I'd be happy to collect the paperwork and send it on to you if you want.
Or you can look here if you haven't already.

Places to avoid - Rutland Road, Roman Bank (some bits of this are ok, but it gets very busy in the summer), Seaview Road (some of this is ok but not top end near the car park).

Do you want to be in Skegness itself or would you consider any of the small towns/villages in the surrounding area?

ShellySara · 17/05/2009 21:42

Thanks for the site, I have seen that one and keep looking back. They just keep saying no children on many of the house rentals.

I am between Derby and Birmingham right now. I am going to take a trip up later this week for a couple of days so that I can get my hands on the local papers and check shop windows.

I dont mind really. I think I would like somewhere with a garden as my daughter loves being outside. I do drive, although I would love to be within 3-5 miles of Skegness as I would like to cycle or walk the majority of the time. With going out into the countryside, you usually do get a garden.

I have asked a few friends to forward any contacts they may have for private rental.

You may want to look at Burgh le Marsh, or Wainfleet too. I don't cycle myself but wouldn't cycle into skeg from Wainfleet because of the busy road, though there are back roads that you may want to check.

Shop windows that usually have cards in are Forget me Not newsagents (on the stretch of Roman Bank between Wetherspoons pub and the bank which i think is TSB), further along that stretch of road is Turner Evans Stevens Estate agent who i think do rentals too. Murrays newsagents on the main shopping street (same side as Argos and a little further up) will have cards in too.

I remembered you should avoid Grosvenor Road too.....

ilovesprouts · 18/05/2009 18:56

my sis says avoid ,rutland road, drummond road seaview mansion, she said burgh le mash is nice ,

ShellySara · 18/05/2009 23:00

Thanks for the info ladies.

Now, here is a question for you, and if you are anything to go by it will be completely unfounded.....
I was reading a Skegness forum written by the "locals", and they seemed to be anti-outsiders-in-their-town. How do the majority of Skegness-ers feel about people not from Skegness in their town? Are they friendly or are they slightly stand-offish until they know you are going to stay? Maybe I just read a poor example of forum.

I drove in from Wainfleet way on the A52 and it seemed ok, however there was no pavements at all so if two lorries were going in opposite directions, there would be very few places to get out of the way on a bike.

I will check out the little shop windows and keep away from the places you have both mentioned.

Many thanks again.
Take care

locals? i'm not entirely sure there is such a thing anymore! were they referring to residents? or holiday makers. I do know lots of people have a problem with the ones who live for 11 months in mobile homes, they aren't classed as residents and don't pay council tax yet use all the facilites. I'm about as local as you can get, i was born in the town! but there have been lots of 'in-comers' over the last 15 years or so and it's not really full of 'locals' anymore.

I'd say generally people are friendly. I don't think it's any different to other places, there are some people you would avoid (it's a seaside town they always have an undesirable element!)but generally people there are very friendly.
What sort of work do you do?

I think there is a path on the A52 from Lomax garage into Skeg, if you went the back way from Wainfleet up to Croft(back road brings you out at Lomax) the roads are small but not so busy.

ShellySara · 19/05/2009 23:33

I certainly know what you mean about places to go and where not to go.

I like places to be friendly, and I do have to admit that the forum was on about tourists in particular, but it did just make me wonder for a while.

I work in computers, and have worked all over the place. I just thought now I have a daughter, I need to settle down a bit, stay away from active warzones, and when considering whether Skegness was a good place, I could only think of fresh air and that it would be fantastic as a kid to grow up near the seaside. I have to admit I havent been to Skegness that I can recall.

I am coming over, possibly tomorrow, to start checking everything out, so going to have a load of fun!

Thanks for all your help, it is very much appreciated. Nice to know some answers before I get there if you know what I mean.

Well any more questions then just ask. I've lived in the area all my life, i grew up in a lovely little market town 13 miles from Skegness and i loved it.
It may be worth looking to see what jobs are available in the area, and thinking about some of the small towns in the surrounding area if you can find a job outside of Skegness. There are some lovely places which have all the facilities you need with a little more of a country feel to them, and fantastic smaller scale schools.
If you want any help (like someone to come and look at properties with you) then let me know and if i am free i will gladly come over and help.
