Moving to Stafford! come and tell all!

My dh job relocated to Wolverhampton 7 months ago and after many months of looking at areas we like Stafford. Our house went on the market today so we just need to sell it now. We currently live in Kent and this fells out of it for me as i originally come from London. We have no family or friends up there so i am a little apprehensive - please come and tell me nice things about it!

We did look at them areas. codsall was the nicest but out of our price range and a little "villiage" for me- Liked Stafford town ,we are looking at going to the other side of stafford ( weeping cross) No offence to anyone but seemed nicer

There's nothing wrong with Stafford! (i know you joke, and the south side i.e weeping cross and wildwood (where i live) are much nicer than other parts, but then i am biased.

Should warn you about weeping cross though, where the twi major roads into stafford meet at WC, they have just demolished the old police headquarters and are planning on building a shed load of houses, therefore increasing the traffic but if your DH is going out of town rather than into it shouldnt be much of a problem.

Both wildwood and walton on the hill are lovely areas (walton a bit more "posh" than wildwood .)

Both areas have fantastic bus routes/provision too! There are quite a few local little shops aswell so not really a great need to go into the main town and i can highly recommend the butchers in Bridle Road...he does fantastic homemade meatballs...yummy!

Ooh, good friend of mine lives in Stafford. Lovely little town centre, very funny Christmas parade/fair, lots of amdram/choral stuff going on if that interests you, and handy for some gorgeous woodlands!

We stayed in the town last time we went and loved it! - am looking at school now (so much to do!) Is there anyone that is better or a def no no

FioFio...yes they have...well almost have its still on going at the moment, they even knocked down Baswich House! Its because the police HQ went over onto the weston road into a new building by the University.

Being biased again, Walton High is a good school, both me and DH went there and BIL left a few years ago and said it was still as good as it was when we were there. They are a specialist Science school, Rising Brook is a specialist Sports school (but a bit rough IMO, no offence meant), Weston Road is a specialist school in maths and computing and is on par with walton.

If you are talking Primary schools, Barnfields, Leasowes and Berkswich Primary schools are good.

I suppose it depends on catchment areas.

Thank you, this is going to be so much help to me, It is primary school, ds1 is 6 and ds2 is 19 months. I would hate to worry about secondary as well at the moment!

Stafford's nice. Avoid Cannock Chase though, there's bugger all to do.

i would go mad with nothing to do!!! my town is so busy, i never seem to stop!

little to do? We are in the heart of England with a major motorway right next to us, fantastic access to other parts of the country!

Off the top of my head:

Shugborough Hall, Sir Isaac Waltons Cottage, Stafford Castle, Trentham Gardens with the Monkey Forest (where you can walk through and the monkeys are wild), Amerton farm, Cannock Chase, Ancient High House and many more.

Stafford is 45 mins from Telford, 45 mins from Stoke On Trent1 1/2 hours from Oswestry, 20 mins from Lichfield, 1 hour from Birmingham, 5 hours from Devon!

There are zoos, theme parks, and large attractions with easy travelling distance.

I LOVE living here, i wouldnt change it for the world. Not too busy, not too quite but there is such a wide range of things to do. My DD is never bored!

I grew up in Cannock so I know there's very little to do. The chase is nice for outdoors/horse riders but there's little by way of theatres (there's one), no cinemas, small amount of shops, no museums (other then the war cemerary/things on Cannock Chase). Cannock's an ex mining town so there's bugger all there IME unless you can go further out.

Cannock wasn't for me either, I moved away from home as quickly as I could. I still have family and friends there though. I couldn't cope with the lack of things to do. Stafford's better, there's a couple of theatres, the night life's better. Burton on trent's not too far away, I'm in Derby, it's 45 mins away, bottom of the peak district, more for ds to do and acessible.
