Anyone have any experience of putting up your own fences in the garden?

Also need to replace gate

Three lengths of fencing need to be put up
we have measured one of them (got confused and cold so came back in lol)

It is 15 foot seven inches

so I was thinking we would need 6 poles and then chainlink (3 foot high?)

Whats the best way to get the poles in?

Anyone done this before, is it possible with 2 small children around and the help of my adult stepson?

you need to have the poles about a foot in the ground I think. Dig a hole and set it in with rapid set concrete (I think you can get post concrete). You need to keep the pole upright until they set.

have a google for DIY fence - there are lots of things come up.

thanks throckenholt

no chance we could just hammer them in deep then

nope - in clay it just wouldn't go in, and in sand it probably would support the fence. Especially something heavy (eg big dog, or big child) crash into it. And if you go for a solid fence - as opposed to a wire one - you have to factor in the effect of wind.

Best to do it properly rather than have it fall down and need to be redone.

You can get those spike things you hammer in to the ground - they might be ok in your soil - but I don't think they are brilliant - but have never used them so can't really comment.

We're doing it right now - and what a kerfuffle!! Actually, we're doing trashing the entire garden and starting again so it's not all the fault of the fencing.

You really do need to do it properly - or one gust of wind or bad landing by a over-weight cat and the lot will come down

You do need to set the supports in concrete and you do need to go about a foot (or a bit more) down. Shouldn't be too much hassle especially if you're not on a hill (like us) as it means you won't need a supporting wall. Go on - get some concrete and have fun

We've used spikes on a long length of 6 ft wood panel fencing - they work just fine.

We've got clay soil, the fence has been up for about 3 years in VERY windy weather - no problem.

I wouldn't climb it... but then, I wouldn't climb a little chain link fence, either.
