Moving to Tamworth/Lichfield

spiralqueen · 03/03/2009 16:33

we're being relocated to work to the Lichfield/Tamworth area and really don't know the area at all. Can you MNs recommend any nice villages/small towns in the area?

We have a 2 yr old to find a full time nursery for plus the joys of finding a good primary school I guess.

Thanks!

Thanks cheesescone. We'll be starting house hunting in earnest about November time so hopefully you'll have found a buyer by then (fingers crossed for you) but that will be the kind of property we are looking for.

We will be moving and settling for good (we hope) in this area in the next couple of years so really interested to hear peoples comments as I don't know it at all.

spiralqueen · 13/03/2009 09:54

Spoken to Bright Beginnings and Animal Crackers, both really helpful with advice. Looks like it might well be a lot cheaper than we're paying for nursery now so that's a bonus

That's good news! When are you coming up? There are sooo Many houses for sale in Alrewas ATM, There is one I've fallen in love with (if we could afford it) Would you like me to post you the link?

brettgirl2 · 13/03/2009 10:42

I would definitely live in Lichfield ahead of Atherstone. You need to be a bit careful with north warwickshire generally, quite a lot of it is pretty grim. If you're looking for a village then I'd go out to the north of Lichfield.

spiralqueen · 13/03/2009 15:40

That would be great to get an idea of what's on offer Jodie - thanks

JODIEwantsanewname · 13/03/2009 22:14

this is it

They have cut down all the ivy from outside and I've noticed a skip outside while I;ve been walking the dog, but I don't know what they have been doing.

It's a great size house, and at a great price, I think!!!!!! Alrewas can be quite pricy, but as I said, there is quite alot for sale at the minute, so supply and demand cames into play I think.

Jodie - So whichever of us wins the lottery gets it first?

FEP · 21/03/2009 21:20

Hi, I also live in Fradley and really like it. We are having shops, a pub, possibly doctors been built at the moment. Oh and some much needed takeaways )

Heard really good reports about animal crackers

FEP · 21/03/2009 21:22

sorry 'being built' - had a long day

spiralqueen · 23/03/2009 12:02

Coming up tomorrow with a party of people from work for 2 days of being taken round in a coach to look at the area.

Met someone over the weekend who lived in Lichfield who said it was a city but with a village mentality - a nice description I thought. Her vote was for Alrewas and she said the only downside to Fradley was the lack of a pub. Is this true Fradley mums?

Someone else at work said that the A38 is very busy but quite safe since they stopped people from turning right, but that it would be noisy if you lived too close to the road. Do people find this an issue?

Thanks so much for all your comments and suggestions - it's taking loads of the inevitable stress out of the whole moving process

THe A38 is very busy, but safe, as your friend said. It can be noisy, but my friend lives on the slip road in Alrewas and I don't notice the road when I go round, although it might be different at night. Although I prefer to live slightly away from it!

3 good 'communitee' pubs and a lovely Indian in Alrewas, only 5 miles from Lichfield (better cafes!) to the south and the same from Burton (better shops!) in the north!!!

Let us know what you think...

FEP I dodn't realise all that was being built, have they started it yet?

FEP · 23/03/2009 21:00

Hi,

Yes the diggers are out and the foundations are being put in, long time overdue but very exciting.

We do have a few pubs in walking distance, The Black Swan at Fradley junction which is perfect for the summer a walk along the canal then sit outside with a drink and watch the barges go by. There is also the Fradley arms on the A38. There is planning permission to build pub alongside the new shops but with the current climate they are struggling to get someone to take it over. We are currently living in hope.

I only very very occasionally notice the A38 noise, I see it more of an advantage having it so locally.

SallyinLichfield · 25/03/2009 15:28

Hiya,

We have the Fradley Arms which is on the side of the A38 in Fradley, which is a lovely pub and great for kids, also as previously mentioned the pub at Fradley junction, which is just a wonderful place in the summer watching all the barges etc...
Good luck & hope you find somewhere suitable. x

JODIEwantsanewname · 25/03/2009 16:00

Oh yes and the Fradley Arms has a Wacky Warehouse! We spend many a wet Sunday there!!

The Black Swan (also known as The Mucky Duck ) is lovely in the summer, used to have lovely food, but I didn't go last summer as DS1 was into everything and I didn't trust him by the water!

spiralqueen · 26/03/2009 14:19

Hi all

Back from my 2 days touring the area. If you saw a big coach going round residential streets that was us

We were taken on a tour via Tamworth, Fazeley, Dosthill, Overseal, Burton and Lichfield on the first day. Followed by a guided tour around Lichfield.

Day 2 we toured round Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Streetley, Shenstone, Alrewas, Kings Bromley, Yoxall, Barton under Needwood, Burntwood and Chase Terrace.

Alrewas, Kings Bromley, Yoxall and Barton under Needwood were definitely favourites to live in and I really liked Lichfield but for shopping/visiting rather than living in.

Hoping to come up in May to show my DH those villages and also get a look at Elford/Harlaston/Whittington. Plus visiting the nurseries.

SallyinLichfield · 27/03/2009 16:08

Glad you had a good time, all the villages you mentioned are fab, and no doubt you'll find something great there. Good luck! x

JODIEwantsanewname · 29/03/2009 08:52

Glad you had a nice time. Good luck in May, any questions, you know where to look

spiralqueen · 31/03/2009 10:50

Challenged the Estate Agent on the flooding in Elford and he said that it wasn't an issue any more as the Environment Agency had just spent a small fortune on fixing the problem.

Having seen the area we're now champing at the bit to get moving so it's really frustrating to know that we can't start looking properly until the end of the year

OP posts:
JODIEwantsanewname · 17/04/2009 14:32

If your still about spiralqueen How's the search going?

spiralqueen · 17/04/2009 15:58

Hi Jodie

Getting mailshots from the estate agent which is helpful as we are starting to be able to gather the info for the types of house we like so that when we start looking in earnest towards the end of the year we can show the estate agents what we're after.

Coming up for a few days at the end of May so DH can see the area for himself and hopefully we can check out the nurseries.

Just itching for the green light from work so we can get the whole thing properly started. Hating this limbo period when we know we'll be moving but can't actually move for a good few months Very frustrating and would happily pack up and move tomorrow.

How's life in Sunny Staffordshire with you?
