Farrow & Ball paint colour - that divine greenish-grey...

What is the shade typically used on exterior woodwork on older houses which works so well?

Is it vert de terre? Pigeon? Ball Green? Or even Stone White?

Maybe any are acceptable. But IME they vary greatly once actually applied.

Does anyone know?

Don't diss Wilko!

They have some very funky lamps in there that would not look out of place in Heals! (They are inbetween the pick n' mix and the mops)

mrsmaidamess · 05/01/2009 17:33

In fact, off the point, but here's a thought...has Wilko become the new Woolies???

MrsSeanBean · 05/01/2009 17:34

I heart Wilko really.

And Yes! I think they may have.

Any ideas on what my opening gambit should be after knocking on the door.... I will need to rehearse!

Can't just say 'Hi, I love your paint'...

I'm going to take a flyer here and ask if the house is in Ringshall?

cos I drive past it all the time and wonder what that divine colour is

pamplemousse · 05/01/2009 17:36

I know exactly what you mean and please please knock on their door, its very important!! I am a bit obsessed with the perfect shade of that colour you describe, I'm always being nosey and looking at others window frames and doors etc and thinking no thats too blue or too grey or whatever.
Sorry if I sound slightly insane ;)

MrsSeanBean · 05/01/2009 17:37

'Tis not LaurieFairy. That means you will have to ask as well just to be sure we've nailed it!

feck that, I'm not mad like you, you know

MrsSeanBean · 05/01/2009 17:38

PampleMousse you are not insane at all - this has clearly been bothering a fair few of us! I hesitated to start a thread for fear of reinforcing my probably nutty reputation but am glad I did!

In fact I could go a bit out of my way & shop in Waitrose tomorrow (OK would have to be a strictly limited shop to leave cash for paint) then I could take in a fair few villages and do a sort of survey.

Clearly I need to get a life!

I actually matched that colour - the blue-gray version of it, not the green-grey (which I thought was called 'elephant' something?) with a lantern from Ikea - took it to Dulux and matced it with a paint card - now have my kitchen units painted in that very flat, matt, grey-blue-chalky colour.

Vamonos · 05/01/2009 17:48

Oh yes a survey sounds good!!

Hope they don't come up with too many different answers tho' or we'll be driving ourselves mad trying to decide which is the perfect one...

sorry not read whole thread

I would guess at green blue or blue green i have used these for my front doors in the past

or from memory sugar-bag blue

I am going for a green/grey this year!

Vamonos · 05/01/2009 19:28

Good luck for tomorrow Mrs SB!

pamplemousse · 05/01/2009 19:33

NotAn Otter - by this year do you mean you repaint your door annually?!! I was wildly impressed that I managed to survive painting our front door with rubbishy Dulux paint that had the consistency of water last summer. I had a headache for a week after using it, and will never use it again!
Also where can I find a pic of that pamplemousse clothing you mentioned a while back? I am intrigued...

pamplemousse · 05/01/2009 19:34

Sorry got sidetracked Mrs SB a survey is a wonderful idea!! Good luck with asking the people

NotanOtter · 05/01/2009 20:48

i do decorate it every couple of years probably

last year i moved house and spent days burning what we estimated to be 15 coats of paint off the door

i painted it and the gate brinjal but have been disappointed so i too am going for a norfolk green...

more mucky than the blue/greens

pamplemouse - will seek out that clothing range!

midnightexpress · 05/01/2009 20:50

Has anyone mentioned Ultramarine Ashes? It's Fired Earth, not F&B, but it's lovely (and persomally, I think the paint quality is better)

MrsSeanBean · 05/01/2009 22:28

That's a lovely colour ME. It seems the possibilities are endless. I just hope my survey is conclusive!

OP posts:
midnightexpress · 06/01/2009 10:16

Oh are you really going to do it MrsSB?

How exciting!

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2009 10:34

There is a house in particular which has 'that' colour ME, I am going to knock on the door later and ask what colour they have used.

OP posts:
SwedesInACape · 06/01/2009 10:35

It is definitely Ball Green

SwedesInACape · 06/01/2009 10:48

Our orangery is painted in F & B Ball Green inside and out and all our exterior doors (escept the front door) are the same colour. I had the paint for the orangery especially made up by a company in Oxfordshire who pay a fee to F & B for the recipe for their colour. It cost a fortune but F & B's own paints would not have worked well or lasted well apparently.

French Gray is my favourite F & B colour and it's a similar colour.

MrsBadger · 06/01/2009 10:52

Enid (who knows these things) once said it was Castle Gray
