Er, how do you arrange an exorcism?

I don't know where else to post this.

Humour me.

If you had to do this and weren't a churchgoer how would you go about it?

Are there alternatives?

My DP reckons we have a problem in this area....

Errr really don't know. Contact your local church I guess?

What is the actual problem?

Tortington · 04/11/2008 15:25

phone up the local catholic church and ask them, it really does depend on whether the priest will entertain the idea - there isn't really a line for every priest to follow

Saturn74 · 04/11/2008 15:25

Local priest can advise.
I had to smile at this being in Property/DIY.
I wouldn't advise you use the DIY route.

Saturn74 · 04/11/2008 15:26

C of E can help too.

pinkmagic1 · 04/11/2008 15:26

OMG, whats happening? Can't you call up one of these ghost hunting type groups like you get on most haunted. Paranormal societies I think there called.

AMumInScotland · 04/11/2008 15:27

I believe that your local C of E church should have someone they can call on for this sort of stuff. I don't know quite what they do, but I'd guess they start by meeting you to find out what the problem is, and can then suggest whether it would be a good idea to do something.

But TBH I'd probably look for other explanations...

Every C of E diocese has someone with responsibility for "healing and deliverance"!

LostHorizon · 04/11/2008 23:17

OK the actual problem is we are having work done to the house which is about 200 years old.

Builders asked us how old our little boy was because they saw him playing in the garden. We don't have a boy. He was dressed in black.

Builders replastered an upstairs bedroom and shut the door over a weekend to let the dust settle. On the Monday there was one child's bare footprint in the middle of the floor, no others leading to or away from it and no way for either of ours to have got in.

Cold spots in various rooms.

A noise of wheels downstairs at night. Like a bathchair or something.

I think the builders made a mistake, the footprint was a simulacrum (like Elvis appearing on a slice of toast), the cold spots thing is just a 200-year-old house for you and the wheelchair noises, well, I dunno, we've got a buggy or two with stuff often left on / in them which I suppose could shift.

However...I need to pacify Mrs LH without reinforcing the paranoia by getting the ghosthunters in. Or scaring the shit out of the DDs. And ideally it's free or cheap.

I would phone a local church - I would have thought most would try to help for nothing, small donation to the church

MummyDoIt · 04/11/2008 23:32

C of E church can definitely do it. My best friend's dad is a vicar and he's done quite a few.

CarGirl · 04/11/2008 23:34

Yes go to recognised christian church, baptist, c of E, methodist etc etc DO NOT go to a spiritualist church. Please check they have some experience in this area, if they look at you like you are mad try a different church.

Which town do you live in, perhaps we can find you one on recommendation?

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 04/11/2008 23:39

You need to talk to Lulumama. I recall she had an exorcism - and I think her ghost was a little boy too.

Drusilla · 04/11/2008 23:39

My friend had this done. She was having problems in an Army quarter and just rang the Padre. Actually, exorcism was bit of a strong word, he just sort of walked round and blessed it and told her he had asked his congregation to pray for her. She had no religious faith at all but he was quite happy to do it and said he had done it more often than you would ever have imagined.

Drusilla · 04/11/2008 23:41

Btw, the Padre would have bee C of E (I think)

TuttiFrutti · 06/11/2008 16:52

Certainly all Catholic priests are trained in exorcism. I don't know about C of E vicars but would have thought they probably are too. It is surprisingly common.

georgiemum · 06/11/2008 16:57

Sounds fascinating. Our old house was haunted (little girl, young woman, dark man 'without a face', nuns - loads of them, oh and 'the shadow') - everyone saw things and we only compared notes later and realised that stories matched.

Things usually happened when there was upheval in the house. It was quite creepy too sometimes but it all stopped when dad died. We said that he's written the spooks a strong letter and was threatening them with his lawyer!

Speak to your local vicar or priest.

BrownSuga · 06/11/2008 17:08

Are there any bits of old furniture/magazines/bits and bobs etc in the house/garden/attic/basement left in the house from previous owners? Start by searching and getting rid of these.

georgiemum · 06/11/2008 17:10

What about looking up the history of the building (and land) and asking the neighbours. Our place was built on a convent and there were some deaths in the house later. Then you have some idea what is going on.

NotBigNotClever · 06/11/2008 17:12

Ex-MIL had this done and it sorted the probs she had with her house. Every C of E diocese has an exorcist (although not known as such), so I have heard.

cestlavie · 06/11/2008 17:30

On a practical level I'd start asking her things like "Did you see that little boy dressed in Victorian clothing today in the kitchen? Boy that was kinda weird huh?". Or maybe have one of the DD's stare at some static on the TV whilst she gently murmurs "Mummy, they're coming" to herself over and over again. Do you think that would help?

lulumama · 06/11/2008 17:33

we had a lovely chap from the local spiritualist church come in and move on the wee boy who seemed to be living in our hall ...he also made his way upstairs, which is when we got a bit freaked out .. the chap only charged £ 10 to cover his petrol..

no proper excorcism , as not a christian, so felt a priest and holy water was not apporpriate

MmeLindt · 06/11/2008 17:35

How did I know that Lulumama would be on this thread?

What is happening LH?

pigleto · 06/11/2008 17:35

I used to know someone at work who did ghosthunting at the weekends as a part time job. He earned a fortune. And he didn't even believe in ghosts.

Do you have any friends that your dw wouldn't recognise who could come round and "cleanse" the place.
